  1. Hard to believe the final weekend is here. Best of luck to all teams. Hopefully it's a fantastic tournament.
  2. Quitting was the narrative about Bismarck and the Blizzard for years and it was untrue. I'm not buying it. I see 17 skaters on the roster this year and 2 goalies. Room for 5-7 more skaters easily in WF. Big issue is no guaranteed ice in HS, it actually has to be earned. Problem I've seen in Bismarck is you do Captains practice and off season training and the top 8-10 are the only ones putting in the effort. I'm talking TRYING TO GET BETTER. If the girls who are 18-25 on a roster want to get more ice time, the off season in any community is where they can put the time in and earn it. Most of the time if kids quit it isn't because of opportunity or a coach...it's because they don't love the game enough. Been there done that with one of my own. Some of the teams in the west tried a quasi JV schedule this winter. It wasn't good. Although it did give girls some ice time. I think if that was the road we are wanting to go down the 15U programs will be eliminated. Probably the best case scenario for the state of girls hockey in ND is a 2 class system. Do away with the small town 19U and large town 15U and do a AA and an A. We all know that'll never happen however.
  3. East votes for a SR athlete. West votes for a SR athlete. This year the West tied, so there are 3 total. Seeley got more votes than Abrahamson. Which brings up another point. I don't think they're supposed to be doing EDC and WDA awards for girls hockey anymore since it's a statewide league.
  4. She's already committed, I don't think she's worried about D1 hockey. Here's the thing with girls hockey recruiting. D1 coaches aren't coming to hockey games in ND and don't care about these awards for ND girls. I'm guessing very few D1 coaches have been to a game IN Warroad either, by comparison. In fact a MN AA girls coach once told me there's rarely a scout at their games. Girls who want to play D1 hockey know they have to try get to National Camp through HP...play Team ND and get looked at during Nationals...and try to get into prospect camps like OS in Minneapolis in the summertime which is loaded with D1 coaches. The ND HS season means next to nothing to D1 coaches. If I had to guess, Abrahamson may have had some D1 offers out east, and chose to play for a good program in a great league closer to home. Maybe I'm wrong on that, and I certainly could be, but the label doesn't mean the same to everyone.
  5. Seeley has a much better team in front of her this year than Ackerman or Sorlie(thanks captain obvious). WF ain't the one seed without Seeley either. Abrahamson had 45 ginos herself, same as Minot and 15 more than Jamestown...lol. I think all 3 goalies are deserving to be in the final 3. However, Abrahamson should definitely be a finalist, especially for leading DL to a state tournament birth. Best player in the state...IMO...is Fischer from N/S. Will she be in ND next year? Who knows.
  6. I believe Wed and Thursday for girls MN State tournament are free at: https://kstp.com/45tv/prep45/mshsl-tournaments/ Warroad v Hermantown at 8 pm tonight.
  7. Not as many girls hockey players in Bismarck, Fargo, WF etc as one would imagine. Neither of the 3 schools in Bismarck would be able to field a hockey team if it weren't for CO-OPs. The biggest thing is now, girls hockey is a participation sport. Fargo North may have a tryout or cut here or there, but nobody else does. If you can tie your skates your on a team. To me, that's not great for the sport. That being said, HS is all about participation, so I guess that's the point.
  8. WDA crowds in Bismarck this year and 2 years ago have been fantastic. The Mandan-Legacy game was as good a crowd I've seen in a long time, and both teams delivered a great game. Wish more fans would show up for regular season games too, place is an empty desert. Bismarck dropped the ball a couple years ago by voting down a half cent sales tax which included a bowl arena.
  9. When it comes to the hockey in the state of ND and the history of the East against the West, I think we can....I do know this because I've coached against these Dickinson kids, pack a lunch....they leave it all on the ice.
  10. Grand forks wouldn’t allow it. And who knows why GF or EGF wouldn’t allow a coop with Sacred Heart. Perhaps it’s the old…”opens up a can of worms for other sports” excuse.
  11. That I get. However if GF had Kilgore 2 years ago I'm guessing some of those would've stayed in GF too. One thing the girls on the border in the East have over the West....options. I do believe there's been some Mayville area girls. Good players too.
  12. Girls matchups: Century & WF: WF won both 7-0 and 4-3. Grand Forks & Davies: Davies won 3-2 and 4-1. North/South & DL: N/S won 7-3 and 3=2. Legacy/Bismarck & Mandan: Mandan won 3-2 & tied 3-3 (Legacy won shootout).
  13. Minot took North to OT not too long ago. Was their 3rd game in 3 days too. Could be a good game. Would be nice to see 4 good games and I think it can happen if the right teams show up from the west side. Gotta get over the stigma of being the dog.... I think Minot and North is only matchup that has played this year. GFC and Legacy got canceled twice.

  15. Last day for girls regular season. Legacy-Bismarck clinched a spot with an impressive 1-0 win in Devils Lake. Williston and CHS tied in points. Williston has the tiebreaker advantage. CHS plays DL today and they need at a minimum a point to jump Willison, so either an outright W or get to OT. Huge game.
  16. Roseau upset Moorhead in girls hockey to get to state out of 8AA as well. Pretty sure Roseau is the only team between the 4 teams (including Warroad, Moorhead and Crookston) from the title games that doesn't have ND girls.
  17. Bad bug going though CHS locker room at the moment. Not too discredit the Braves they played their asses off.
  18. Congrats to Devil's Lake and Abrahamson, Olson and the entire team for punching their ticket to the Girls state tournament. If my math is correct (and I hate math)....Minot, Jamestown and Dickinson are mathematically eliminated from the state tournament on the girls side. Legacy-Bismarck, Century and Williston will battle for the last 2 spots. L/B has 23 points. Century 22. Williston 21. Willy has dickinson left. L/B and CHS have DL and Davies...going to come down to the last day if Williston holds on to beat Dickinson Friday.
  19. I think you could still get away with Rube's proposal...just one bye in the east and 2 in the west. Now how that gets bracketed, who knows. Worst part about girls hockey is lack of non conference games. I think most teams had 2 this year. Next year 1, no 6 point games. Hard to take chances and groom kids when every game has a state implication and no wda/edc.
  20. I think there's 7 west and 5 east but I like the concept.
  21. Girls action tonight: every bubble team in action: mandan at minot. Minot needs. Win. legacy at Williston both need a win. Devils lake at Jamestown. Both need a win. Dickinson at CHS. Both need a win. essentially a state tournament night.
  22. I'm guessing if Bismarck could host 3 boys and 2 girls, WF could do the same. The youth programs mirror each other pretty closely. Does it thin out the heard? Yes. As you can see for the second year in a row both Bismarck girls teams will need to rally to make state. CHS and LHS remain competitive in boys and I believe if they stick it out on the south end the program will bounce back. Hardest thing to understand for all of us who are competitive is HS sports are designed for participation first. Winning is secondary, or even further down. Once one gets to that point it makes it a little easier to swallow.
  23. Rumors of everyone quitting and the program folding.
  24. Wily 3-0 over the Demons after 1.
