Was going to mention Gino made some incredible coaching hires. Looking back I wonder of doing both jobs caused the Hockey program to suffer. They say recruiting catches up with you in a year or two....especially back then. Or maybe he was burnt out, but the last 3 seasons we went 40-69-6 finishing 7th, 8th, and 8th in the WCHA.

Providence came out ready to play but I don't think it is fair to say we weren't. We struggled at beginning of game with our breakout and their forecheck and then dropping into a trap in the neutral zone. I was happy to see us make adjustments on the fly rather than waiting until the period ended. The timing coincided with the late shot and skirmish but we had started making the changes a couple shifts earlier. We put a little trust in our defenseman and instead of trying to break out in a 5 man unit we had a couple forwards spread them out by drifting out of the zone between center ice and the far blueline. Emery made a couple beautiful tape to tape passes from the endline to the far blueline which caused them to back off on their forecheck a bit and allowed us to hit the 3rd forward skating horizontally and we were able to bypass the neutral zone mess they had been creating and started being able to enter their zone with speed.

Yep. We had 3 guys get absolutley blown up on opening kickoff which should have been a wakeup call. Like they say, everyone has a plan until they get punched in the teeth.

3 plays that would or could have kept game interesting into the 4th quarter. The Dennis drop was huge. We have the ball with fresh set of downs and can probably run out the clock and either get 3 or 7 and it is 21-10 or 21-14 at half, and get the ball to start the second half. Results in kicking field goal to make it 10-21 with plenty of time left. We get NDSU behind the sticks and have a wide open shot to blow Miller up on 3rd down and we go for the high hit which he crouches under and scrambles and they pick up first down and finish drive with field goal. If we drill him right in the numbers there we can burn timeout before they punt and would have decent field position and 2 timeouts left to get another score before halftime.....and that is given the 25% chance that he hangs onto the ball on a hit like that. Fumble to start second half.

I know it's first game and I know it is an exhibition game...blah blah blah "Tough to play against" "culture" ....blah blah blah I know it is one game, even an exhibition game at start of the season but If I am Berry last night I stop the guys wearing the C and the A's on the way to the locker room last night and simply tell them that effort is completely unacceptable and I won't have leadership that thinks it is, the room is yours...and then I go to Bonzers and send Dane and Simpson to Joe Black's.

Non Scholarship means no athletic scholarships....it doesn't mean no grants or scholarships. My youngest brother went to Concordia....he had about 70% of his school paid for.

I want the two most uncomfortable people to be the QB and the QB's mom...... I think I just saw the Grant Sergent's mother wearing a luxurious robe, drinking a glass of wine and getting a pedicure in the stands.....we haven't even breathed on him. Both lines are getting manhandled.

Competition. Iron sharpens Iron. After you have committed is the time to keep working on your game and getting better because if the coach comes across someone as talented or more talented he isn't going to not take a run at him. You see it more in hockey where kids will play a year or two after high school and a kid who commits at a time when his arrival is still 2-3, even 4 years away from arriving on campus and he gets passed up by other kids.

I didn't mean they didn't play.....they didn't play meaningful snaps when the opportunity was there.

Well, I would say zero on defense since we decided to just play prevent defense for the last 35 minutes instead of mixing in personnel and continuing to attack.
