Can I support aggressively going after a portal entrant? Yes.
    Can I support tampering? No.

It's a pretty simple, clean line that I hope Berry and his staff are smart enough to not cross.

What is definition of and who is doing the tampering is probably a fair question.

Player talks to his advisior and says I think I would be interested in entering the portal if I knew a certain team or teams was interested in me. Advisor makes a few calls to find out if their is mutual interest and reports back to his "client". Coaches did not initiate contact with player who is not in the portal and simply answered phone call from a Family Advisor(future agent) who he has probably dealt several times over the years....not tampering?

Coach gets a call from an advisor who has a client in the portal to gauge if they have interest and if it would be a good fit and Coach inquires about another player that he  knows the Advisor works with who isn't currently in the portal...Tampering?

Does anyone here know for a fact that UND doesn't have skating instructors? Unless I've missed something, all I see are a couple of people saying they don't know if they do.

I would be shocked if they don't have skating instructors come in once or twice a year and have all the training, drills and video instruction that go with it and several players also may do it on their own over the summer as well.

It's hard to enforce rules being made up as they go...

    True.

I think the process of a player entering the portal and calling around or having his advisor(assuming he has one) make some calls to find a new home or better fit is pretty standard even if done in reverse where a player reaches out to his advisor and has him check the temperature ahead of his entering the portal so a player has destination ahead of entering the portal technically.

I am guessing the accusations come in where some feel that schools are reaching out to an advisor and inquiring as to whether a player would be interested in entering the portal or having players reach out to their former USHL or other Junior league teammates which some players could potentially do on their own. "Hey coach I was texting with my old buddy and linemate X and he said he was thinking about entering the portal but there are really only 1 or 2 places he would want to go and doesn't want to enter the portal unless he can land at one of those schools and feels if he enters the portal he is pretty much committed to leaving...what do you think he should do?"

I am guessing that many of these guys who have played on travel teams and in juniors with 100's of different players have pretty extensive contact lists touching most of the college teams in the country on their phones and could easily conquer 6 degrees of should I enter the portal?

This might be the stupidest conversation these boards have seen in years.

St. Thomas is a minimum of 10 years away from being a NCHC addidtion consideration.

And by that time there's going to be a completely different world in the  college hockey landscape.

    Correct.

Question for the rest. If you want the NCHC under the Summit Banner and St. Thomas moves all their programs besides Football and Hockey to the Big East do you still want them as an affiliate member of the Summit?

nchc has 8 schools with 2 total dogs in cc and miami...

they actually water down the conference...adding st thomas and asu boosts the conference...

Arizona State was 9 spots behind CC and 5 spots ahead of Miami last season.

    once again why wouldn't it?

UND and Denver are not going to want to water down the hockey conference they are in.

WMU and Miami are not going to move to the Summit and ASU certainly would not. Add nothing to the Summit.

CC, SCSU, and UMD are all staying in conference. Add nothing to The Summit.

    Why would it?

Maybe it’s just me but I think MAC schools should be in the CCHA and summit schools in the NCHC.

I don't think WMU for sure and Miami at least previously wanted to be in a conference with a bunch of division 2 schools and UND and Denver didn't want to be in a conference with a bunch of division 2 schools either and UNO obviously made it known that Hockey is the primary sport on their campus, St. Cloud had to beg and convince the other members they would be committed to hockey financially(and they have been true to their word) when the league could not come to an agreement with Notre Dame to be the 8th team. I remember seeing Motzko and Gasparini together in Grand Forks a couple of times(once at the Pepper) and if I remember correctly I think Gino lobbied on their behalf.

  8. Leave the Summit out of it.

Has Miami stated they want to leave or is that speculation?

    Add Arizona State.

I know Bowling Green wanted in a few years back, not sure if that still holds true.

If Miami left and Arizona State is added that would be alright. If Miami stays and Arizona State is added and they wanted a 10th I would say Bowling Green, Air Force, and St. Thomas would be best additions. Have to be a little careful with St. Thomas if the league is under The Summit flag as there is quite a bit of talk in the cities of St. Thomas moving most of their Athletic programs to The Big East at some time in the future.

Agreed that the athletes individually play a big role in this - however, these were recruits who were chosen, checked on by talking to their coaches, interviewed, followed, and offered by a coach who emphasizes culture to come to UND.  Even so do recruits sometimes don't pan out - homesick, can't work through adversity, poor chemistry,  etc - absolutely.  Should this happen to almost an entire group?  Not in a program of our stature.  Something went wrong here.  Just look at our goalie recruitment to see what I mean.  The good news is that we seem to have rebounded some through good use of the portal (although time will tell).  The bad news is that this type of program building is unsustainable if we want to be on top.  It's past time for us to win some top recruiting battles and build our roster with a good mix of talent in an orderly fashion.  Agreed that Covid made things strange but still ....

There isn't a coach in America who has been at a school for more than 3 or 4 years whether it is in Football, basketball, Hockey, Baseball, or virtually any collegiate sport who does not talk about the Culture of their program.

If Ihenacho doesn't get a waiver we currently have 0 legit PG's and A TON of non-shooters. We have a lot of athletes however! That is good compared to recent years teams!

Going to have to switch the play style completely from the end of last year and what worked, shooting a lot of 3's. Going to need to create a lot of easy transition layups!

I am going to assume Trent had a conversation with the coaching staff and I would speculate that they believe Ihenacho will receive a waiver from the NCAA.

I agree with you in wishing the game could be played mid-afternoon.
I also understand that logistically, it cannot be. And it has nothing to do with anyone living in Las Vegas. Or maybe the football staff actually prefers the early kickoff and our opinions don't matter?
Maybe they will find a way to push the kickoff to 1 or 1:30 and move the hockey game back to 7pm given the magnitude of games that weekend.

Officially I believe it was to make it a bit more family friendly as games were getting over fairly late.
Unofficial side benefit, probably boosts concession sales a fair amount

And the Student Body can get downtown at a reasonable time!

Ask a politician if they are a man or a women and see how many can answer this

men are men, women are women, if trans want to play they can start their own league for trans only

The irony is that if they did form separate leagues they would have to separate the trans women leagues from the trans girls leagues due to the unfair advantages the trans women would have.

Hmm, it looks like he’s playing in England.  Making a living and he can at least catch a few Premier League matches.

While Geno's hairline is looking a little rough he has been doing real well playing in England as he was the league MVP in 21 and 22 and led his team to the Title in 2022.

He signed with a team and is currently playing in Germany this season.

    I like your thought process.

His article has so many flaws it's hard to know where to start.

The first is to frame the question as Miami vs Arizona State.   It's broader than that.   And that makes it a false choice.

The MAC schools (BGSU, Miami and Western Michigan) are in different conferences which creates tension.   Why would Western stay if Miami leaves?  My bet would be NCHC loses both.

And out west, there are other potental entrants to D-1 "likely" - U-Arizona and UNLV at top of list; does that NCHC want to have 2-3-4 schools playing a long way from everywhere else?  Not to mention the bigger question of whether Arizona State wants to affiliate with the NCHC; I haven't seen any evidence of that, and broader history of Big Ten-PAC partnerships suggests a Big Ten affiliate membership would be their first choice.

I suggested a couple years ago that the NCHC should have added Arizona State and Bowling Green.

I do not think any additional teams whose schools are not d1 across the board should be added for various reasons.

Question for the masses: In the linked article, it says that Portz "averaged 8 minutes, 4 seconds on the ice". Is time-on-ice for college hockey publicly available anywhere?

I know there is a more in depth website that breaks down stats further than the typical box scores. I believe it takes a subscription for the service. I know Schloss has it and has referenced it a few times.

This is what's gonna drag people (or programs) into the muck with the NCAA, or with whatever state or local body has the power to enforce the relevant laws/rules.  Arguably, the entire premise underlying NIL was that one's name, image, and/or likeness would have some value BEFORE money starts getting thrown around.  Giving blanket or flat sums to recruits before they've set foot on campus - save for the occasional blue chip superstar - is almost certainly going to raise eyebrows.

Sham NIL deals hiding pay-to-play setups may be hard to prove, but probably not impossible.

    This^^^^

The O'Bannon lawsuit that led to all this was about the "athlete" being able to use their name, image, and likeness or be compensated for the use of(i.e. video games).

That is what is should be. The NCAA needs to set a couple of guideleines and schools should set some limits on how and when school logos/name can and can't be used by the athlete.....and from that point on it should be up to the athlete to put together any branding of their name and negotiate compensation.

I'm not hitting the panic button, but we currently don't have that pure shooter like Norman to really space the floor and help open up driving lanes. All of our current guards, except maybe Treysen, are drivers first before shooters

Treysen - he is a scorer that can shoot, he's going to be up and down because of the type of shots he shoots. Not a shooter like Norman was

Omot - should be able to improve on his 30% he shot last year but again is a scorer that can shoot it a bit. Not a shooter like Norman

Trent, Brooks, Danielson, King, Mayar - All drivers first. None are shooters.

TT shooting like he did last year does help create some space and driving lanes off the pick & pop.

Hoping we use one of the 2 remaining scholarships to get someone that can really shoot the ball to help space the floor!

I don't know if I agree in total about Eaglestaff. I think his game was forced to evolve a bit  since in college he is shooting against bigger players and they probably close out on the shooter quicker than he was used to in High School and even AAU. I know his senior year in high school almost  half(276 of 567) of his shots came from beyond the 3 point line. I think as he gets stronger and quicker he may be able get his shot up a little quicker, develop a little more consistent range, and create space a little easier and hopefully also be able to finish stronger through contact at the rim. We might be saying the same thing differently but I think he looks for the 3 first and foremost.
