And now on the other side of the equation, an offer out to an OL from MN who was playing at Albilene Christian. Had quite a few offers coming out of Iowa Western CC.

Poor wording on my part. Last fall at Fresno was his first head coaching job since interviewing for the head job at UND in 2013/14. He had not been a head coach since leaving Sioux Falls in 2009. While it obviously worked out for him, it was just a comment that he ended up continuing to climb as a coordinator instead of taking a head coaching job somewhere and going that route.
-
It is interesting he never got his first head coaching job until last year. EDIT: Since interviewing for the UND job in 2013. He left Sioux Falls in 2009. Just keep moving up the ranks as an OC/QB coach.

North Dakota Football Expectation Level - 2022 Season and Beyond
jdub27 replied to Midwestern Hawk's topic in Football
Like I said, it can get better. Those are two things that most would agree on over the course of the season. But there are probably half a dozen things that happen each game that plenty of people would disagree on that isn't so black and white. For example, clock management on the final drive of the season, when they still had plenty of time to score and make sure SDSU didn't have any time left. -
North Dakota Football Expectation Level - 2022 Season and Beyond

Every single fan base (including those 70 miles south of UND) complain about play calling and time managment. It is a constant at every level of football. If anyone thinks it will magically be "fixed" they are going to be disappointed because it isn't always black and white. This isn't saying it can't get "better" but what that means is 100% subjective. As for penalties, while there was a spurt where there were some untimely penalties, UND was one of the least penalized teams in the FCS this year (top 10 in fewest penalties and penalty yards per game) and easily the least penalized team during conference play. Again, still room to get "better" but they were actually pretty good as a whole this year in penalties. -
Sure it does. Riley gets a pay raise and a longer leash at USC plus keeps the dream alive with a easy path to the CFP. If he moves with OU to the SEC and immediately gets exposed, he won't have a job for long. The B12 isn't the SEC and I don't see a ton of seasons where Oklahoma is putting up 10 to 12 win seasons consistently.

Nah. Pretty decent point. How About We Keep Sioux Fighting "anything" Methed out bird with head dress people thought would be the logo. Don't think people who accepted the reality of moving on used any of those reasons when voting on the new nickname.

Ran out of gas. 4th game in 6 days appears to have shown up against a quality team. Perspective on the team and what they can do this year is quite a bit different than it was 9 days ago. Still a long way to go and the pieces need to click, but they have the chance to make some noise this year.

Can't tell if serious or not. Do you think he just assumed he (the guy running a 15-17 yard route on 2nd and 17nd) was just a decoy? According to you, QB1 can't get past his first read and I can guarantee that the WR's know the progression of a play, so not sure how that correlates.
-
Seriously. There is an argument to be made for taking a timeout there, but it has absolutely nothing to do with the clock. They ran a play that would have done exactly what it needed to if either a)the QB led the WR half a step less or b)the WR comes out of his break a little harder, both of which, timeout or no timeout, can happen any play. Time. Was. Not. An. Issue.

You see decisions that are questioned across every single level of football, including the NFL. It has been going on since the beginning of time and won't stop. Coaches operate on more than just "the numbers" and they may or may not be correct when taking the human element into account For example, twice in the 4th quarter last week, Pittsburgh was down by 14 and scored a TD to be down by 8, pending an extra try attempt. Analytics say that you should go for 2 in that situation, as it increases your odds of winning by ~2%. Yet the Steelers (and plenty of other teams) ignore that. Interestingly enough, your chart actually agrees with Pittsburgh despite the expected increase in chances of winning. Meaning all charts aren't necessarily created equal.

Their best PG is somehow a 6'6" small forward who's out with an injury and they've had multiple players serve at least one game suspensions for unnamed reasons. They have definitely been struggling, especially with their aspirations coming into the season.
-
How that drive turned out had nothing to do with clock management despite your willingness to die on that hill.
-
Didn't Altru end up match that donation? https://fightinghawks.com/sports/2012/8/29/205670708.aspx And their fans complain about clock management and decisions made during the course of a game more than ours! Well, based on your assessment of the final offensive drive of the season, it is clear you don't.
-
There's a reason they waited until the season is almost over to post the job (mainly because they actually want good candidates and that is a lot less likely during the middle of the season).
-
With the head coach being let go and one of the co-interims looking for other career opportunities, coupled with the statement that a search process for a head coach will begin immediately, safe to say it was made clear they are looking at bringing someone in from the outside to right the ship. Actually think this is a sport UND will get a pretty solid pool of applicants for.
-
He literally dropped it right in the basket. Any other type of throw is knocked down or picked. You're criticisms of QB1 are stretching further and further.
-
Crazy what you can do with a $90 million football budget.
-
Make up your mind. I can tell you firsthand with 100% certainty that this was not the message he conveyed when he interviewed. Or even close.
-
You may not, but there are still people not happy with the previous coach who never bought into the community. Probably not a coincidence that the cupboard was left pretty bare when he unexpectedly took off. In order to recruit, particularly to somewhere like Grand Forks, you need to buy into the community to be able to sell it. Not a coincidence that a lot of UND coach's have ties to the University. Now if a coach wants to come in and use the job as a stepping stone, and be wildly successful while doing that, I'm all for it. But you aren't going to accomplish it without buying into to the University and community.
-
There are also minimum standards for a Tier 1 program and from the sounds of it, they were not being met. That's on the league to step in and they didn't. And firing a coach and then having to ask him come back and coach while saying you'll "rethink the decision" and then not. Plus lying about him stepping down? There's a big mess here and I think it is a pretty far stretch to blame the players for trying to hold ownership accountable to at least meet required, bare minimum standards.

Didn't you hear? If we were still the Fighting Sioux, we'd be getting more blue chippaz!
-
The Fighting Sioux nickname was retired in 2012. Fighting Haws was chose in 2015. You really think 2 more years would have made a difference? What's actually really amusing is cross section of the people who are the loudest critics/lease accepting of the Fighting Hawks nickname were overlaps quite a bit with those that chose it because here are just a few reasons people voted for the Fighting Hawks nickname because they thought they were being sneaky and sticking it to the NCAA: How About We Keep Sioux Fighting "Anything" Methed out, crooked beaked bird with a headdress people thought would be the new logo I mentioned this years ago, when you allow a large group to make a decision, you are going to end up with the most generic choice of the bunch. Why do you think parties always end up with pepperoni pizza?
-
The overlap between these two groups is much, much smaller than you think. Those that wanted the name changed have zero vested interest in what happened beyond that.
-
Because we have literally spent all season setting up that play-fake? The odds of Quincy coming in on short yardage have to be about equal to the odds of Tommy taking off and running. One thing that seems to be ignored is Tommy's ability to avoid sacks. UND has taken 5 for 40 yards this year. That's tied with Kennesaw St for 1st. There are only 8 teams with single digit sacks allowed and 6 allowing less than 1/game. As has been mentioned, I don't think anyone would say OL play has been significantly above average this fall, though they definitely deserve some credit on this. Plenty to be critical but when an offense needs high completion percentages and has to avoid negative plays to work, the current starter fits that bill. He absolutely needs to get better at knowing when to tuck the ball and take off but that's a lot more teachable than some of the other deficincies people are ignoring with the other options
