Eric Schmidt named head coach of North Dakota football

I have the same thought of 'give me one more year of eligibility' every home game during the Hawk Walk when the team walks through the tailgating area with the band playing on both sides of them. Then I quickly remember that I'm in my 60's and I grab another beer, something to eat, and relax. -

The continuous improvement motto gives me flashbacks to my days working in manufacturing engineering. Was a consistent message for our company. It is interesting to see it applied to a fb team also but it makes sense. -

Just went and watched it. No argument here. Some very impressive throws. -

When do people think we’ll hear about the staff? Maybe some positions on Wednesday? -
My earlier comments weren't directed at you. It's been stated a number of times on this board that we don't want a HC that isn't looking to move up in a few years. That isn't a bad plan but there are a lot of coaches who have been successful in their 'dream jobs' too.
-
That is definitely true but we'd take his last 2 seasons.
-
I don't buy into the theory that not moving up is necessarily a bad thing. You don't have to look beyond Stig at SDSU (26 years) and Nielson (9) at USD to see coaches with longer tenures having big success at the FCS level.
-
Could be but I thought it was a big black mark if you stayed anywhere more than 5 years. Shows you lack ambition.

I like the Schmidt pick and he must have interviewed well. Tibesar has very long list of experience too and I'm guessing was strongly considered. Years ago I asked one of his relatives about the possibility of him coming back but at that time his career and salary were beyond what UND could offer. Since he left UND: Kansas State (2006) Special teams coordinator Kansas State (2007–2008) Defensive coordinator & defensive backs coach Montreal Alouettes (2009–2010) Linebackers coach Montreal Alouettes (2011) Defensive coordinator & linebackers coach Purdue (2012) Defensive coordinator & linebackers coach Chicago Bears (2013) Linebackers coach Northwestern (2014) Defensive consultant Wisconsin (2015–2016) Outside linebackers coach Wisconsin (2017) Defensive run game coordinator & outside linebackers coach Oregon State (2018–2021) Defensive coordinator & outside linebackers coach Akron (2022–present) Defensive coordinator & linebackers coach

I hope it's released soon cuz otherwise I'll be checking back here every time I wake up during the night.
-
Dosch isn't UND grad (Dickinson St) but has had multiple stints coaching at UND.
-
I hit up my friend with an inside source and to see if he'd give a hint, even regarding timing. He said his guy is tight lipped and not sharing anything.
-
Nice to see so much interest and passion for UND football although it’s the same 8-10 of us commenting over and over.
-
Cuz it’s anonymous so everyone can be an expert.
-
Both of their resumes are impressive. I didn’t realize how extensive Tibesar’s experience is until I looked it up again.

ASU is a great story this year. My dad winters down there so it's been fun to follow them. Their NIL collective must be doing well too. Their QB is getting $600k+ and ten players got Mustang Mach-E cars for their use while at ASU. Colorado has a majority of the top earners in the Big 12. I have some contact with a top hs basketball player being recruited nationally. NIL money was definitely a big part of their recruiting and decision on where to go to college.
-
I don't think your top 5 are bad choices and part of me hopes they pick someone from your top 5 so you have skin in the game. Maybe I can stop worrying that my expectations are too low and that is what causes us to lose some games.
-
I see potential advantaged both ways and neither path is certain. Successful HC is a plus but so is experience at a higher level which I am hoping brings better contacts for finding assistants, recruits and portal players.
-
I guess we’ll just have to disagree. For every Brian Kelly there are a lot of successful DII coaches like Don Morton, Jim Wacker or Earl Solomonson that failed when moving up to DI or DI-AA
-
Agree for sure.
-
I agree with that but was reacting to the notion that a DII head coach is inherently better positioned to succeed vs. coordinator level guys from FBS level. There is risk either way and I don't believe the narrative that the DII coach would be a safer pick. It is going to come down to the individual, not where they coached before.
-
Mediocrity is a potential outcome regardless of who is hired. I personally don't believe that going with a DII head coach has a higher probability of success vs. hiring any of the guys being discussed that have coached at the FBS level.
-
The salary estimate at $350k would suggest someone like him, Schmidt or Roehl
-
I don’t think so. Soon after he retired I talked to him at a signing he was doing. He was adamant he would never get into coaching. I’ve not heard of him coaching anywhere
