Freedom of speech does come into play but it comes with repercussions - if these students aren't affiliated with any organization there really isn't anything that can be done to them. If the pictures were taken on private property is there anything that can be done? If you google Siouxper Dunk you will find a Twitter Account that bashes UND Administration for "allowing" people to wear these shirts - not sure that UND can do anything about it other than instructing their staff to not allow anyone wearing an offensive shirt to their event - which would be incredibly hard to monitor. It does pile on to the negative PR for UND but that can just as easily come from students fighting in alleys, falsifying signatures on petitions, shoplifting from stores. You really can't control how stupid people can be.
-
Have there been much local media coverage of this? I guess it's not illegal to be drunk and stupid - actually this was one of the reasons the liberals used for getting rid of the nickname - the inability of UND to control what fans from other schools do with the name - but the reality is making the name go away doesn't actually fix that.
-
Come on you have it all wrong - the "Fencing" they want to practice is this one: Fencing: (Informal). a person who receives and disposes of stolen goods. I believe they have had several members of the football team graduate with honors in the "Fencing" program.
-
Ya but you know in their world head-to-head doesn't count anymore.

GRAND FORKS – The University of North Dakota baseball team entered Wednesday’s rivalry matchup with North Dakota State at a bit of a disadvantage. The Bison don’t play any conference games this weekend, allowing NDSU to throw any of its top pitchers. UND, meanwhile, plays a three-game Western Athletic Conference series against Grand Canyon Friday through Sunday. There's one excuse from the first time they lost they won't be able to use...I guess the new mantra at FU is "Oh there's always football" and history shows that wil end too... then what will there be. (The funniest aspect of this is all the FU trolls who feel the need to come here and debate every comment.)

I agree - of course it will sadly die a natural death through the years. Maybe it's just the games I attend but the chant seems to be less obvious at some games. While there continues to be liberals that think they can control where the Sioux logo shows up - there is no way UND will ever make any noise whatsoever about fans wearing Sioux clothing or cheering the SIoux name at their events. They will however control what they can which includes the pep band and anyone "representing the school".

http://www.startribune.com/lifestyle/258238391.html Not specifically nickname related but shows the direction we are going - will the shouting of "Sioux" at the end of the national anthem soon be a tradition of the past?

I also think if you dig into the issues the Lakota Sioux in southcentral North Dakota/South Dakota and the Utah Utes are facing you would find the Lakota Sioux have much bigger social issues than a nickname by a school located 500 miles away - higher levels of poverty, alcoholism, tribal council dysfunction, unemployement - the highest level of poverty in the US. I think the Utes are in better shape when it comes to social issues. Plus the NCAA had UND in their radar they needed to have a scapgoat and show that they were taking action on the nickname issue. Even if UND would have only needed to get the Spirit Lake Sioux on board someone from the NCAA had already challenged in the press that the vote of the Spirit Lake people that had occurred would not have been acceptable because what the NCAA agreement said was UND needed approval from the "Tribal Councils" - it never got that far for the NCAA to throw that stipulation out there because of the non -vote by the other tribe but it was something the NCAA had in their back pocket. Bottom line - the NCAA found a small school (UND) they could make an example of - they backed off from Florida State because they were too big and powerful within the NCAA.

I could buy that except there are teams being broadcasted that actually lost more than we did.

Just pointing out that there are plenty of schools that do provide a free education to Native Americans so it's not a myth.
-
At the University of Minnesota Morris (a public instituion within the University of Minnesota system) there is a program that provides a free education to Native Americans - don't know the details but it is in place and was shared during freshman orientation last year. http://www.ehow.com/info_7826113_tuitionfree-college-american-indians.html

Wow - what happened did you just make bail or did you run out of allowance money for internet access? Gone for three days now you're all over this site with your drivel - continues to be sad that you are so infactuated with UND sports.
-
I like it but FU uses some form of "Thunder" I believe.

You probably won't find those "Non Scholarship" student athletes taking a job to collect petition signatures or the late night shift at Best Buy.
-
And have a thunder clap shake the building after a goal is scored. It's hammer time!

Good god all I was saying was don't feed on rumors and to give the kids the benefit of the doubt until we hear otherwise - and it's not a rumor posted on a website. You are making all kinds of assumptions about their work ethic based on no facts. If the coaching staff sat down with them and said in our new philosphy your skill set doesn't fit here - that doesn't mean they are quitters it means the situation changed and they need to move on - that's not a quitter that's a kid that is making a tough life decision. The quitters were the ones who left during the transition. The only thing these kids are entitled to is not being trashed by "fans" based on rumors. Perhaps they weren't given the option of "staying and changing their ways" we don't know do we?
-
Pretty sure that player turnover happens when there is a change in coaching staff jut about everywhere- until something is officially announced I think we should stay classy - these kids didn't ask for a coaching change when they signed on and we can't assume this list is accurate and even if it is that every one of them is leaving because of bad attitudes, worth ethics etc. New staff means new focus and the talent of former players might not fit for the future. In the end they stayed until the dust cleared rather than just bailing on the team.

If they are a rival they should at least make it interesting by winning a game once in awhile - Nail meet Hammer. (so much fun when trolls come to visit).

University of North Dakota Hockey 2014-15 season

Next thing will be Winston will claim he did it because he goes to bed hungry every night. -
Just checkin to make sure you were still in the basement defending the honor of FU on a non-rival's fan page.
-
But the reality is right now it's a mythical buttfootball victory for FU. During the history of the FU/UND game there were plenty of stretches where UND won many years in a row and FU won many years in a row. There were times when the team that was ranked higher did not win the rivalry game. History does show: Team that won the last time they played: UND Team that won the most in the last decade they played: UND Team that won the most over the entire course of the rivalry: UND Team that won the most when FU trolls get to pick the time line: Yup

Disappointing but it's been happening since the dawn of college - now it just gives the trolls something to focus on rather than their own team. -
Whether written or unwritten I was told that directly by a UND employee. They said they were rold that "Wearing the Fighting Sioux Logo as an employee of UND might communicate that UND still supports the logo." Somewhat related never heard anything this year about the NCAA threatening to force UND to forfeit a game if any player or employee was found wearing a Fighting Sioux logo - wonder if that is still in force? I need to add the rule applies to when they are on the job.
-
Yup and according to reports there were some on the committee who suggested the need to approach area businesses and ask that they consider removing all references to Fighting Soux. Of course it goes without saying they wanted the name removed from every inch of UND including the current rule that no UND employee can not wear the FIghting Sioux logo to work.
