Yes but this also goes back to a program that is run by Chippewas is not inclined to reach out to Lakota/Sioux - the UND Native American Cultural Center is not welcoming to those who have views different than theirs.

I'd like to see the Herald tackle that issue - based on the final 7 what did the high-powered agency bring to the table? Just another example of top-level executives being out of touch with their own community and constituents - I've experienced the mind-set too many times - "We have to pay big bucks and use someone from out of state if we want to get something really creative." Was there a RFP for this project? We paid six figures in state tax dollars to come up with what we had before we started. There was no creative thinking brought to the table.

And if they wouldn't have gone through this process and just changed the name to Roughrider what would this thread be saying? I agree that using a committee to come up with a nickname is not a process that lends itself to coming up with something truly unique but then again the torch and pitchfork crowd would have been very busy if a small group appointed by Kelly would have been given the job. I still haven't heard anyone share a process that would have been better than this, one that everyone would have been happy with. We know it doesn't exist.

You are allowed to ask the question but I really hope you aren't serious. Have you ever met the man? While message boards allow anyone to bash anyone those who know more than what is posted on a message board would know how much the man has invested in UND. Running the Flag School school of North Dakota is not easy, decisions are not always popular - he knew that the nickname would be an albatross his entire tenure and as emotional an issue as it is - he still had a University to run. Overall UND is in a very good place right now - I'd like to know how anyone could have handled the nickname issue that would not have had different groups of minions angry.

Biggest drawback for each remaining name (final 15)
CMSioux replied to jimdahl's topic in UND Nickname
So other schools are going to find something nasty to say about our new nickname - what's new? Bi-son, EIEIEIO, Old McDonald had a farm. Hail the bison hail the bison with their tails up in the air....USC Trojans, West Virginia Mountineers - what school doesn't have their nickname made fun of? -
Biggest drawback for each remaining name (final 15)
CMSioux replied to jimdahl's topic in UND Nickname
I would have liked this thread to have been titled "Biggest benefits for each remaining name". The reality is we are going to have to live with one of them so why not find something to like. -
How many colors are there in the retired Sioux logo? If you just looked at that logo would you be able to tell what UND's school colors are? There are plenty of professionals out there that will be able to create great logos whether i'ts a horse, a person or a weather pattern and use the school colors (with others complementing them). As far as Explorers if only one other school has it then I feel that is pretty unique - especially with the connection to Lewis and Clark that North Dakota has (not saying that is my first choice but I could live with it). If your mind isn't open then you won't like it no matter what.

This issue isn't even on the table as far as I'm concerned - it's not fan bases that take it to this extreme - it's a few fans with too much time on their hand. Too much political correctness running amok to worry about what might show up on a sign - do they even allow them anymore?

Maybe he wanted to beat the "Fire Kelly" thread.

Wasn't changes in scholarship rules one of the reasons that NDSU decided to make the move up. DII Schools that couldn't afford it were pushing rules to legislate scholarship limits for one thing (and it wasn't on a fan site and this isn't meant as trash talk). The last few years in DII other schools were starting to catch up with NDSU - for example they lost in St. Cloud - not something that happened before scholarship equity kicked in.

I hope you are right last year we couldn't stop a third and long to save our souls.

When we develop the Sack Attack of old there won't be as many well-thrown balls making their way down the field. As Bubba said the opposing quarterback's mother is going to be the second most stressed-out person in the building (with her son being the first).

What happened to the "Fire Hak" thread - obviously the writer for that story didn't check with those sources. -
I call Strawman- Sitting Bull sites on private property. There are probably other statues of Sitting Bull around the country. Not an issue.

I don't have a problem with student fees providing some support for expenses such as building rental, security etc. Do they still have the free community meal? Do they pay every dancer or just those that win the competitions? I don't believe they should be entitled to money without having to compete for it and show the benefit, as well as being accountable for how they use the money. It seems the attitude is "Give us money and don't ask questions."

Dang - I think I could tailgate with you (but I do have you on "ignore" so you must have a dark past .

I'd love to hear her thoughts on the Lakota SIoux tribal members who see the value of the Fighting Sioux nickname to their culture. I"m positive she would diss their opinion.

I prefer to use the term "discuss". I feel that the ability to post anonymously has taken the online discussion of the rivalry to a higher level of disrespect. I would also say that the more immature a person is the more disrespectful their postings can be. I can take good-natured ribbing - I can't take constant disrespect and trolling. If you think using SU instead of FU would reduce the level of disrespect I'm all in and I guess it has to start somewhere.

Years ago I used to go to Bisonville to keep up on regional sports talk - had to stop it has gotten so venomous, juvenile, insulting, and incredibly mean-spirited. Yes I know there is some trash talk here but nothing compared to over there. It's like an obsession to constantly comb the web and Sioux Sports in order to compare, trash and question to the extreme everything related to UND. Deny it if you will but the use of names other than the appropriate school initials started over there.
-
Molen - I'd love to have you take this message to Bisonville and report back on the results.

Thanks for your interest/obsession with UND sports - the last time the two teams played it was in Grand Forks so going forward the first game would logically be in Fargo, after that it really doesn't prove anything that the next game is in Fargo since the series is re-starting - the third game in the series will either be in Grand Forks or in the playoffs. Are you really that insecure that you need to continually come here with your bison-swill? It really does show an inferiority complex. FU is a rival of UND but I have no interest in going to Bison-swill because I have so much more to do with my time.
-
Just to be clear you can be a fan and supporter of UND and still have feelings of respect and historical pride for the name Fighting Sioux. Being "Sioux Forever" doesn't mean you aren't willing to move ahead.
-
With the Nickle Trophy forever retired where it belongs it will be interesting to see if the non-interested FU students try another vandalism attempt on a UND building in conjunction with the game. (troll-bait I know but they are so easy to catch).

Truly a Grand Forks legend I expect there will be efforts made to remember this great community icon. -

I guess my point is that's $100,000 they weren't planning on having.
