Not sure...his 40-time was in the 4.6s on his recruiting film, but I don't trust recruiting times all that much. What I know is what I have seen in person and he definitely is able to create separation with his legs, his upper body strength and his ability to go up high to get balls. He passes the eye test on the practice field but it's yet to be seen if that translates into ability on Saturdays. This is what the UND coaches said about what drew them to Cloyd at a recruiting camp at Iowa State: Kostich said in a different scenario or recruiting class Cloyd might receive FBS attention. Instead, he was lost in the shuffle at an Iowa State recruitment camp where Fighting Hawks assistant coaches Kostich, Joel Schwenzfeier and Carl Reinholz were eyeing the prospect and were impressed with his 40-yard dash time.

No worries at all. I do think he has all the potential to give JK's stats a run for its money if he dedicates himself to UND FB and Bubba's mindset. Sky's the limit. So not exactly "preposterous" but the onus is on Alex to turn potential greatness into reality.

I would say my comment is based on potential. He's got all the tools, just needs to learn the system. Plus he'll only get bigger and faster.

That's right.... Mercer went down right in front of me with the bum hammy the day it happened. I forgot about that. He was walking on it gingerly but ok afterward, but those things probably feel worse the next day after the adrenaline settles down. I haven't seen him for several days so I was unsure what is status was.

Thanks! I wasn't counting Meeks and Paulson for some reason ... but Comstock was news to me.

    2016 Season

QB Prater, 6-2, 205 (Griz); LB Corby Richman (Oriska, N.D.), 6-0, 230; WR Zak Hernandez, 6-0, 195 (Grafton); and San Diego-area prep DE Colton Hessenflow, 6-4, 230, are your school-start additions. Did I miss anyone? Hernandez played spring ball and maybe Richman, if I recall correctly. As for the two deep, after watching much of fall camp, some surprises are Alex Reed getting the nod over Mercer (maybe Mercer needs more time to get acclimated to the offense) I thought Mercer had a better camp. Also, I thought Chris Carter might make the two-deep over Holm. Though CC has had is struggles in the past, I still thought he had a better camp over the rookie. If Cloyd, indeed keeps his RS this year, all I can say is look out Big Sky and maybe all of FCS for the next four seasons.
  9. Yes, it started out as a club team and competed that way for a number of years before being elevated to varsity level.

That's some indepth analysis right there. The only thing missing from key losses was Jawon Arrington.
  11. I just purchased an Xbox 1 for the family and was pleasantly surprised by the ESPN3 capability and all the other "free" tv options. Sounds like PS will soon be coming out with a next gen platform so maybe there will be something that provides ESPN3 and other similar free-to-watch apps.
  12. Intriguing development out of UND Football. (I'm assuming a lot in the next paragraph) Looks like UND will be getting an important insurance policy for next year to keep Boatman's RS intact if Studs can't go for whatever reason. Former Hawaii Rainbows and Montana Griz QB Eric Prater (Lake Havisu City, Ariz., 6-2, #205) should be a school start addition to the Fighting Hawks roster. Prater, a former Special OPS Army Ranger, will have to sit this year out under NCAA transfer rules, but could be ready to back up Studs next season and maybe take the reigns fulltine in 2018, if his play merits it. He should have two more years of eligibility One more interesting side note. Prater was supposed to be the starter against UND last year until he got hurt in practice in the week leading up to the game. This paved the way for Simmons to take the field in lieu of Gustafson.
  13. Sorry, it's taken so long. I am trying to get the new house organized after the move and time got away from me. Thoughts from the last 3 days. 1. The guys are just itching for a game. Their focus hasn't been quite there on the practice field. I think many plsyers have moved on to Stoney Brook. 2. The other day, the special teams were practicing some new wrinkles in the punt game that should make our opponents a bit unsettled. That's all I will say in open forum. 3. Speaking of the punt game .... Dussold looks to be taking the inside track on the starting job. We shall see. 4. Taj Rich is giving it his all everyday, but it just might be the young ILB Donnell Rodgers who eventually gets the keys to the car to play alongside Obrien and Bakker. 5. Clearing Seibel to play earlier than expected is just a formality at this point. # 23 continues to put his MCL and ACL through the gauntlet, pounding hard on the turf and practicing with the rest of his mates. Today, he bolted out on a full sprint on a fly route and had to kick it into another gear to catch up to an overthrown ball from Bartles... Not only did he catch up to it, but he lunged out to snag it. He looks very close to ready. 6. D. Harris has had a very good week doing Harris things with multiple PBUs AND INTs during skelly and team scrimmages. 7. We've heard a lot about how good Toivonnen and Wanzek have looked this fall camp, but I will add another to that list: Easton Erbes out of Breckinridge, Minn. He won't have his shirt pulled but he looks good for a walk on. 8. Pretty certain Holm will have his red shirt pulled, primarily out of necessity. 9. Another area where UND has an embarrassment of riches is at Tight end. You know what your going to get from Steady Eddy Matthewson, but then there's also true freshmen Cloyd and Pinke who are both massive for as young as they are. They just need to get their blocking assignments down. Jacob Francis is another good one and good blocker. Mollberg is looking more like a TE everyday, plus he's so versatile out there if Bubba ever wants to get tricky. Fiedler better do all he can to stay healthy in order to stay in the two-deep hunt. 10. I know I am repeating this but Clive is a black hole for footballs. He just sucks them in. He's just so damn slight. Although he is up 10 Pounds from last year. 11. OL Demon Taylor has been taking it easy this week with an unspecified minor injury. That's given Aplin a lot of opportunity at RG. 12. NFL Scouts are srtarting to shoe up at Memorial Stadium, mostly just doing their due diligence or just-in-case role since their are really no seniors on this squad that are on anyone's NFL radar. The Miami Dolphins visited on Thursday. --END--
  14. I think their fine. To each their own. Hopefully we can end this civil war. Go North Dakota!
  15. I should have a full report tomorrow that covers the last 3 days.
  16. Yes, it was a lot of second and third stringers out there today on D, not totally, but let's just say that youth was well represented.
  17. Made it out to the last hour of practice this morning: The defense, namely the secondary, had a challenging morning. Their heads just didn't seem in the game and they were caught out of position a lot. Players on defense would line up for snaps not knowing what scheme they were running because they were late getting set from the last play. Coach Schmidt addressed the lackadasical focus afterward, making the entire defensive squad do an extended session of Up/Downs. The highlights: 1. Heidelbaugh hit Clive for a 90 yard TD after Clive fought the ball away from defender Torrey Hunt. 2. Bartels hit Mercer in the back of the end zone on a quick strike. 3. Santiago caught a couple of nice swing passes out to the flats, and on one Santiago beat the DBs to the pylon even thought it appeared the DBs had the angle. 4. Studsrud hit Mercer on a nice 30+ yard out pattern over Torrey Hunt. 5. Thanks to some bad focus by the secondary, Bolinski had a 90 yard TD pass of this own to young WR Easton Erbes, a true freshman walk on out of Breckinridge, Minn. 6. Nevermann displayed a lot of nice runs today, mainly up the gut. His running style is sudden, smooth and violent, if you could imagine something like that. He finds a hole and does not hesitate to break, he pours on the jets and smashes through the line with maybe a few jukes, when needed -- or a sudden leap -- like in the last spring game. 7. To give the D a little love, Donnell Rodgers did have a very nice PBU on a pass from Heidelbaugh. Despite the number of long pass plays this morning, there were still too many drops by receivers, at least one bad snap and a couple of false starts. Better focus is needed. --END--
  18. Yes and yes. Pretty much all access except on the field. Starts at 8:30 am
  19. Beautiful warm and sunny morning at Memorial Stadium for the first live scrimmage of fall camp. A very nice crowd, too, showed up to watch the scrimmage/practice that saw the Fighting Hawks work on a number of situational scenarios, i.e. red zone, goal-to-go, punt returning and lots of live 11 on 11. UND President Mark Kennedy and AD Brian Faison were in attendance, as were a number of UND men's basketballers, such as Q, Geno, Tez, Josh Collins, Shanks and Drick. The teams looked a little rusty today from my perspective, but they each had there moments and highlights. Too many bad snaps today. They were pretty evenly matched, but I would give a slight edge to the defense as having the better of the two sides today. Here are some of the highlights: In the Red Zone: * You don't say this every day, but there was a nice Bartels to TE Mollberg pass over the middle. Mollberg looked strong and confident and gained first down yardage. * Heidelberg took the majority of snaps as Studrud's back up. Heidelberg had a nice quick strike over the middle to TE Pinke, one of two nice balls caught by Pinke on the day. * Heidelberg showed marked improvement today on his composure behind center and confidence in the pocket -- a far cry from where he was as a true freshy. * Heidelbaugh scrambled to his right and drew the defense his way, sucking them in. He then threw a cross-the-field rope the opposite way to RB Oliviera, who was swinging around the left end. Oliviera easily scampered in for a TD. Punting: It appears Bulduc is your starting punter for now. He clearly had the best boom on his kicks today, forcing returners to back-peddle at times. He also stuck one inside the 5-yard line, allowing the special teams to down it right before the goal line. Live 11 on 11: * Nevermann is a solid workhorse type runner, and he's good for 5+ yards on first and second down pretty much every time, setting up manageable conversions. This is refreshing and much needed. * Nevermann broke one and rumbled for 15 yards while dragging 3 defenders on his back. * On the next play, however, Nevermann was dragged down in the backfield by the LB tandem of Bakker and Jade Lawrence after Nevermann tried to change direction at the line and take it around the right tackle. It was Nevermann's only negative yardage play. * WR Dulin looked ok on a jet sweep reverse, in which he was the one who took the second hand-off. He gained first down yardage but paid a price in the end by running too upright, reminiscent of Iwarri Smith's running style. He wasn't injured, but he got smacked pretty good. * There was nothing but beauty in seeing a 30+ yard Heidelbaugh pass to TE and true freshman Alex Cloyd, who went up high to bring it down inside the 10 yard line. * Not long after, Heidelbaugh was able to find FB and walk-on true freshman Finke for a catch and run. Finke took it 25+ yards before being tackled. What made the play work was a really nice block by Nevermann to pick up the blitz. * Oliviera took one wide around the right side of the line and absolutely demolished young CB Holm before rattling safety Palmborg. The run wasn't much of a gainer but the point of impact got the offensive sideline excited and got the defensive players sniping back. --END--
  20. All moved in. I'll be there!
  21. Thanks all for your understanding! and kind words as we make the big move this week! I do hope we can get some feedback, though, on the first practices in full pads.
  22. Port is an opinion guy. There's a difference between what he does and the kind of journalist you're describing. Love it or hate it, he represents a brave new world of media that is much different than that of yesteryear. They essentially do the same thing, just with a lot more opinion and they tend to cut out the need to get both sides of an issue. That is one of the major inflexibilities that puts dinosaur journalists at such a disadvantage to opinion bloggers like Port. He is able to break news and not follow the same strictures and conventions of traditional news organizations. Best of both worlds for him, and usually for the public, because the public doesn't have to wade through all of inane PR bullsnot that comes when a journalist "gets both sides" just because.
  23. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, and not to come off all self-important, but I will have to take a hiatus for a couple days as we are closing on our new house tomorrow and will be moving the next 2-3 days. I will pick up again as soon as we get settled in at our new Grand Forks location.
