GeauxSioux
Hawks win draft lottery, get 1st pick One of the other pieces of amping up the offense is signing Jonathan Toews, the team
Siouxhockey78
That is what they think but it's still up to JT. Hopefully Duncan, OShie and them are whispering in his ears.
HockeyMom
Correct me if I am wrong, but didn't Darin Erstad stay at Nebraska a while longer than he could have because he was originally drafted by the Mets? I don't think that if a player stays in college to avoid playing on a team-okay, not necessarily to avoid being on that team, is wrong. What Eli Manning did was wrong....he could have at least smiled, put on the hat, the jersey, and made nice in front of the cameras...and then negotiated behind the scenes with San Diego to trade him. Not to mention that this all happened AFTER a small program in remembrance of A TRUE AMERICAN HERO (no matter how he died) Pat Tillman. Eli sucks, I'd take Phil Rivers anyday over that schmuck. Ray77
Darin Erstad was drafted 1st overall by the California Angels in 1995. This wouldn't really matter for Toews anyways. He couldn't just stay at UND another year and then re-enter the draft if he didn't like the fact that Chicago has his rights. A player not signed by his NHL team within two years of being drafted can re-enter the draft, as long as he is 20 years old or younger at the time of the subsequent draft. Players over 20 become unrestricted free agents. NCAA players are an exception: NHL teams retain the rights to a college player until 30 days after the player has left college. HockeyMom
Darin Erstad was drafted 1st overall by the California Angels in 1995. So he wasn't drafted by the Mets earlier than that and re-entered the draft by not signing?
Eskimos
So he wasn't drafted by the Mets earlier than that and re-entered the draft by not signing? He was selected by the New York Mets in the 13th Round (357th overall) of the 1992 amateur entry draft. He was 18 years old. He went to college for 3 years and then was drafted 1st overall. A pretty decent decision on his part for sure.
choyt3
So he wasn't drafted by the Mets earlier than that and re-entered the draft by not signing? Rick Helling was selected by the Mets in the 50th round in the 1990 draft after a year at a community college. He didn't sign and went to Stanford and was drafted in the 1st round by the Texas Rangers in 1992.

EDITED TO ADD: My example doesn't matter anyway, since the NHL is different than MLB.
the"source"
This thread should be more appropriately titled, "Will he sign before completion of his junior year?" Here is saying that he will not. He is barely nineteen, if that. He is developing well in the WCHA. He is getting an education, and likely living the Life of Riley on campus. He is a stones' throw from his hometown. He has friends on the team with unfinished business. He has all of the tools necessary to continue developing, both on and off the ice, at his fingertips. The pro game will be there for the next fifteen years or more. He has an insurance policy that will well protect him against injury. I am as much of a genius as the other self-appointed geniuses here who are considering it a foregone conclusion that Johnny is gone. Maybe it will be true, maybe it will not. There are as many good reasons for him to stay as there are for him to leave. Maybe he and his family are not as motivated by the blinding almighty dollar as others often are. The bigger picture, and the better wisdom, has Johnny Toews skating for the Sioux next year. I am happy to inform that Johny T is not 100% sure fire out of here. I think there is a greater then 60/40 chance he stays! Think about it 3 gold's for his country. Come back as a C for both team cannada and the SIOUX! 70/30!! Finish what you strarted! 80/20!! Fine ND babes 90/10!! Lead your country and your brothers to the promised land. And God spoke and said "A child shall lead them" Johnny T came here a boy he will leave a Man. 100 % chance of returning!! I AM THE SOURCE!! UNDintheNHL
Fine ND babes 90/10!! Don't get yourself caught up in the "fine ND babes" until you've been down south and have seen the multitudes of fine southern belles that central and eastern North Carolina has to offer. Even SC and Georgia have a million of em. Trust me, Ive lived in ND, NC, and GA, and ND is at the bottom of the list. There are some exceptions though. My ex doesnt fall into that category.....but that was my fault
