Fetch Posted January 29, 2007 Posted January 29, 2007 Say what? From the So Sioux Me Dept.: There's nothing wrong with a little good-natured ribbing of the opposing goalie after he allows a goal, right? With that in mind, INCH's double-secret Mariucci Cam caught North Dakota athletic director Tom Buning directing the traditional "sieve" chant (complete with Bob Dole-esque, right-handed, pen-gripping, pointing gesture) at a Minnesota netminder. Memo to Gophers and Sioux fans: We're just the messenger. Now talk amongst yourselves. http://sports.espn.go.com/ncaa/news/story?id=2746931 Quote
siouxnami Posted January 29, 2007 Posted January 29, 2007 http://sports.espn.go.com/ncaa/news/story?id=2746931 This story is going to have legs isn't it. Quote
SiouxMD Posted January 29, 2007 Posted January 29, 2007 Who cares...what are the going to do to us? Refuse to schedule us in any sport other than hockey? I would rather have an AD who is a fan...not just an adminstrator. Tom...keep up the good work. Quote
HockeyMom Posted January 29, 2007 Posted January 29, 2007 Tom...keep up the good work. Is there anyone that doesn't smile when they see Buning? Seriously, I love it......he's excited and proud to be here......at least that's how it comes across to me. Quote
The Whistler Posted January 29, 2007 Posted January 29, 2007 So are the picking on Bob Dole's war injury which lead him to hold a pen in it all of the time. I find that hostile and abusive. Quote
Fetch Posted January 29, 2007 Author Posted January 29, 2007 For all I care he could have been giving them the Bird Quote
PCM Posted January 29, 2007 Posted January 29, 2007 Caption on the Buning photo at INCH: Sieve chant? Tomahawk chop? First down? Only North Dakota AD Tom Buning (wearing suit) knows for sure. Hilarious. Quote
siouxforeverbaby Posted January 29, 2007 Posted January 29, 2007 Caption on the Buning photo at INCH: Hilarious. I think he needs a jersey to go over the suit. Anyone think Hak should let him where an actual one? Quote
THETRIOUXPER Posted January 29, 2007 Posted January 29, 2007 I think he needs a jersey to go over the suit. Anyone think Hak should let him where an actual one? Or, he could just bid on a game-worn jersey at one of the home games, just like the rest of us that want one. Quote
Fetch Posted January 29, 2007 Author Posted January 29, 2007 I have never done this chant - But I never related it to a Tomahawk chop either - More just a point at the goalie Quote
Siouxmama Posted January 29, 2007 Posted January 29, 2007 I have never done this chant - But I never related it to a Tomahawk chop either - More just a point at the goalie The first time I did the sieve chant was at a Sioux/Gopher game at the Final 5. (Yes, it felt good ) Now my 6 year old son looks at me until I do it along with him. Quote
farce poobah Posted January 30, 2007 Posted January 30, 2007 For the record, we can rule out Tomahawk Chop, because I've been watching Sioux hockey for 30+ years and never seen or heard it. (And yes, I'd like it to stay that way.) Otherwise, I'm starting to like this Buning guy. Quote
dagies Posted January 30, 2007 Posted January 30, 2007 http://sports.espn.go.com/ncaa/news/story?id=2746931 I've got no problem with it when you consider MN's AD just rejected scheduling THE FIGHTING SIOUX for anything but hockey. I say go sieve Maturi too, Buning! Quote

(And yes, I'd like it to stay that way.) Trouble is, there are already anti-nickname proponents who tell people that Sioux fans do the tomahawk chop when what they're really doing is the sieve cheer. Don't think that they won't hesitate to use the picture of Buning while claiming that he's doing the tomahawk chop, citing INCH as a source. Quote

Wasn't there already an anti-nickname person last year that saw video of the sieve chant and posted somewhere on the web/wrote a letter to the editor about the tomahawk chop at Sioux games? Quote
BigGreyAnt41 Posted January 30, 2007 Posted January 30, 2007 I have never done this chant - But I never related it to a Tomahawk chop either - More just a point at the goalie I always related it to the same motion that the ref does when he points to the net signifying that a goal was scored. Quote
siouxforeverbaby Posted January 30, 2007 Posted January 30, 2007 I just clicked on the link again and the picture changed to one of phil and no longer the one of Buning. That is sad it was a good picture. Seriously, Tom is an awesome guy and I can easily see why everyone who meets him likes him. Quote

Sioux-cia Posted January 30, 2007 Posted January 30, 2007 We partied with the AD and his wife last year at the Final Five. They are both lots of fun!!! Real people, not like the hoity toidies that usually are in administrative positions. What's wrong with having fun when your team is winning? Sitting on your hands and acting like that's beneath you because you're an AD, is NOT what being a sports fan is all about!!!! Geeze Louise lighten up all of you who are worried about this. The only ones who see this as a problem are Goofy fans. Quote
