The Sather Conundrum

Suggest taking a listen to this latest pod. Listen to them all but this latest one they discuss best jobs in the Summit and I think that helps paint the story of how Sather’s done.

I know you know this, but it's not the coaches / players who are setting their budget. I have heard that this past year, Football budget increased while Hockey decreased. There is something to the bus trip to Omaha.

Clearly, not enough $ to go around. Strategically, I like where they're at. Keep hockey at a high level, increase Football and once Football gets going, then start really concentrating on basketball.

Yeah basically. I don’t like admitting that this is tough place to coach in comparison to our peers but the more I think about it and the more I hear others opinions, it’s really hard to argue. I would have us above USD because Verm.

all 4 dak schools are in the middle of nowhereville...and that aint changing anytime soon and for the last 100 years we've been the top dawg  of the 4...excuses

Sure but there’s one major difference between us and those schools and we all know the answer to it and it’s something that’s not changing anytime soon.

Get the coach right and it’ll solve 90% of your problems. ORU is the perfect example. Supposedly it’s middle of the pack Summit League job. Get the right coach and it’s a job you’re capable of winning games in the NCAA tournament. Get the coach wrong and you become one of the worst teams in D1 basketball. Coaching matters

I am a little confused by this thread.  We are currently 4-2 in the conference and showing some signs of life even in the games we've lost.  I know this is what message boards are for but there's at least a little hope that's been missing for a long time.

I think you just nailed the reason for the thread.  What you said is all true. That said, 7 years of history and underperformance is also true.  Sather's contract is done at the end of this year - thus the Conundrum - do you extend multiple years based on a current 4-2 in the conference, or do you move on based on the 7 years of history. Obviously, the remaining games may weigh heavily on that decision.

Bingo. Sure if you just look at the last 6 games you think things are great but is it extension worthy?

I am already of the opinion that Sather is likely to get some sort of extension but a win tomorrow I think just about solidifies that beyond some complete meltdown.

I think I agree. What if they get a 4 or 5 seed and melt down in round 1 of the conference tourney like they did against Omaha a couple of years ago? Then it gets interesting again

You might be right.  If that plays out, how long of an extension does UND offer? I would imagine Sather wouldn't be to interested in a 1yr deal, maybe not even a 2yr deal - Unless the $$ was too good to turn down.
