What does it mean when it says Tender instead of a players name? There are a lot of those in the 1st round

USHL teams can tender up to two players (2010 birth year this year, always 16 year olds) in exchange for their first and second round picks in the phase 1 draft before the draft happens.    

Phase 2 draft happened today, which is the 17-20 old pool of guys.  I believe teams have 50 guys on their protected rosters.

As was said...and...before the draft, teams talk to players and if they want the team and the team wants the player.  boom.  This year's draft really showed the CHL to NCAA influence.  The USHL is scared of guys that also have CHL opportunities.

Tarin Smith from Everett goes to UMN.
Not sure how bad his injury is or if he'll be ready by the start of the season.  But good pickup for them.

As DuPont's defensive partner, I'm not sure how many of Smith's points are just due to him being paired with Landon.

Completely agree.  USHL teams are going to really have to do their due diligence in the phase 1 draft.  I mean you look at Dubuque last year trading up in the first round to take a kid like Colin Grubb, and he's headed to Brandon next year and likely will never skate a shift for them before he's in Grand Forks.

It will be interesting to see what happens in the WHL draft.  Historically they had the separate US Draft, so they were used to taking flyers there.  They picked up Thompson and Morris early last year, but Joey Cullen was picked up later because of the Force connection and the <1% chance he would report.   In a unified draft they probably would've slipped a ways simply because US kids are harder to commit.  I predict zero top dog american kids go in the first round of the WHL draft this year.

So Schlossman had a good article on the USHL draft in todays herald.  He mentions 2 grand forks kids picked early.  Tyler Kunz and Noah Mcgauvran.  Anyone know much about these 2 and any chance we see them in our pipeline someday ??

fair- a handful of kids have selected CHL over NTDP over the years.  From a physical development perspective the NTDP cannot be beaten, kids come out of there strong and fast.  Can argue about competitive development until everyone turns blue in the face.  I guess my point is that you seldom see a top kid say CHL over NTDP.  Does it happen?  Sure, but its unusual. With that being said, that will limit US kids getting drafted high, because they are a riskier bet.

Kunz is big like his brother. Plays for Shattuck.

Mcgauvran is tiny. Plays for Northstar Christian Academy in Alexandria.

I wonder if the Nicol brothers are on Chyz's radar?  Reid is excellent in his own right, but his little brother is a potential exceptional status player.  They are from Brandon.

I've been seeing a lot of mentions of that as well.  Would be a great pickup for them and a nice offensive dman to fill the Hutson spot in their lineup.

They also mentioned on the pod that Carter Meyer is leaving the NTDP after this year to play in the Q which will definitely be a blow. Heard a few players were leaving but naively felt it wouldn’t be any of their top players haha. Seems like they could lose a few more big ones now who knows
