Starting with Chaves.

UND isn't a small D2 school anymore. Shiny buildings and history/culture isn't going to cut it going forward. If the national stage wants to take UND seriously, then UND needs to take itself seriously and make moves that are uncomfortable to people.

Yes, Chaves is the root of the problem, no question.

Honestly, I don't think Herter would be able to solve the problem that Berry has created.

Yeah, I don't think just hiring/firing an assistant coach would change much at this point.
This isn't like when Shaw was let go.

That said...from the players/recruits standpoint, I wonder how they would react to a complete coaching reset?
The last thing we'd want is for some of our current talented players or higher end recruits to depart due to a wholesale coaching staff swap.
If UND is actually going to do something this offseason, they would need to have everything lined up for succession to avoid any uncertainty with current/incoming players.

I know when Schmidt took over FB, he managed to hang onto current players and recruits for the most part. The new coach would have to reach out to all of them and tell them what he has planned for the program.

What you are basically stating is you want UND to keep everything the same (minus Berry). We might as well be in the movie "groundhog day".
We can't live in fear of losing players when there is an obvious need for a coaching change. Players can leave anytime they want in today's game anyway. Heck, we might lose players this year, even if Berry is still the coach.

Definitely not what I was saying at all. :D
Wouldn't it make it easier for a new head coach or coaching staff if players like Boisvert, Livanavage, Swanson, etc and recruits like Zellers and Laurila all stayed the course at UND? If a new coaching staff comes in and everyone leaves, it might take a few seasons to even get back to where we are now. And that would cause the natives to get restless again and we'd see FIRE <INSERT NEW COACH> threads started promptly. ;)

True but I am saying that all those players can leave/decommit right now even with Berry here. UND cannot afford to be concerned with the "what ifs" because at the moment the "what if's" is bringing this team down.

Um I am not sure what you are watching but a new coaching staff could easily elevate the program in no time. All it would take is 2 NCAA tournament wins and they would be better off then UND has been in the past 9 years.

Schmidt isn't relying on "tradition and culture" like Berry lives by.
Berry lives by "tradition and culture" because that's the only thing he knows, he is stuck (like a lot of fans are) in the past. His refusal to get on board with the "new nickname" is also a big tell about living in the past.

Oh for sure.

Yes, they could
Unfortunately nothing is guaranteed.

We're going back and forth on semantics here. We both agree...as I am sure many do here...that changes need to be made.
The product on the ice is not working and something needs to jolt this program back to being a national contender each year.
What those changes are and when they happen still remains to be seen.

I doubt anything happens this year. I believe Berry has one year left on his current deal and I don't see a buyout happening.

Having a lame duck coach that will be making recruiting decisions isn’t great though. Even if he gets a few studs, the new coach is going to have to re-recruit them. If a player is torn between a few programs, are they going to commit to a coach that could be gone the next year? Tough position to be in if you don’t expect Berry to be the coach, unless he has a good year, and even then, does 1 good year deserve another extension?

None of the elite 2008 and younger class puts UND at the top of their list...this is a huge problem! None of the classes Parise or Toews are thinking UND is the place anymore...

Could it be we can’t just win off history and The Ralph anymore? Maybe we have to catch up on the times in terms of the NIL. Schmidt has been mentioning the 1883 Collective left and right and talking about how important social media is these days for recruiting. Our hockey coaches are radio silent on both the collective and social media. Get with the times Berry!

Hockey has always been a humble, blue collar sport....it isn't anymore...the elite of the elite have families paying $70k+ for their kids...that's not blue collar anymore, that's elitist !@#$

here's the biggest, saddest issue...some of you like me, some of you dont...I've been on this forum since 2003...I watched and bled Sioux hockey...until bubs...I still have my NCHC TV link, but I watched 80% of games between 2003 and 2017...I now watch 2 or 3 per year...

And all that money doesn't guarantee that their kid will ever make it to the NHL.

people don't just want wins, they want to see excitement on the ice...amazing goals, great saves, big hits...I don't even know what to say. I don't have the expertise to endorse firing a coach, but I know I used to love Sioux hockey, I know kids used to see UND as a great place to play and develop...we have slipped

Used to go to every game I could. If I couldn't go I'd pay to watch, home or road. I'd buy merch left and right. Went on the destination trips, etc. Now? Pfft...I won't spend a dollar on the program until Berry's gone. It's not even close to the UND hockey I knew. And it hasn't looked right for awhile. I don't care about the NCHC "Championships". Even most of those years things didn't look right. But now? Things don't look right AND they're not performing right. When you're a head coach of a team, your job is to leave the program off better than when you started. Brad has basically zero chance of doing that.
