Is Bob Gillen not doing the high school hockey website anymore?  No updates since March, with the season apparently starting this week.

Havent heard anything but nothing really changes until he puts up the coaches poll and that doesn't post till first week of games or so.

Morelli will be a magi.  They did lose Haaland to Northstar but Minot will be capable of taking a Thursday night game at State.

I think Minot has the best goalie in the state coming back to them.  You could tell how much they think of him when he was able to come back in February from an injury as a Sophomore and take the net from Seniors.

I think we are looking at an all GF final this year (shocking I know).  Both return at least three of their top 4 scorers, and always reload instead of rebuild.  Not sure who outside of a Minot or a West Fargo has a chance to knock them off.  Davies lost their best player, South Shanley lost a ton of seniors and has questions in the net, North graduated ten and lost almost 80% of their scoring along with a pretty good goaltender, Sheyenne will have questions in the net as they lost two seniors and their top scorer from a team that struggled to score.

Wilbur's way too early top five:
1. Red River
2. Central
3. West Fargo High School
4. Minot
5. Davies/North

Jamestown with a new coach after Matt Stockert resigned after 20 years behind the bench. Jake Stilwell takes over as his Dad was coach of the Jays in the late '90's and early 2000's. I coached with his Dad when he and my daughter were on the same squirt teams. Jays lost their goalie to graduation and more than likely will go with a sophomore who was my bantam goalie last year. I'd be pleasantly surprised if they made state this year

Ah Wilbur you are still young son. 2001 was his last year. By the way how well do you know Matt Morelli? Coached with him for 2 summers when our kids were on the same AAA squirt team

Very well.  Played some men's league with him.  My dad knew his dad very well.

How damaged is North Dakota high school hockey with players leaving the state

Think..... that decent buck you saw before season....

mangled on the side of the road by a convoy of cattle hauling semis.

That's what's left of it.

It's that damaged.

You maybe can still find a scap or two of salvageable quality tenderloin, or a decent rack to saw off, but really, it's trash at this point.

As sad as I am to read this, its 100 percent true.  You've still got some quality kids that have stuck around to play, but the overall quality is going down and trending down.  Communities are still producing kids, a few West Fargo kids just committed to D1 universities, but those kids weren't around long enough to play high school hockey.

The ultimate connundrum.  Send your kid away early and give up having them in the house as teenagers?  I mean sometimes I'd love to kick my kids outta the f'ing house...but then you send them to college and you wish they were around more often.

I think there's 3-4 families from Bismarck who sent their FR kids away before they even played a single HS game.  To me, that's nuts.  If a kid comes in and dominates HS hockey, now then you have something to consider for your SR season.

We always hear about "playing up" and increasing the competition.  But then rewind back to mites, peewees, squirts and we teach kids and families to play where you have the puck on your stick more often.  Seems to be contradictory in itself.

I'm glad Mattern made it.  I think that sends a fantastic message.  Play in ND, stay home with your friends and family, take advantage of off season programs and activites.  You don't need to leave to make it.  Trust me on that one, a good friend of mine from freaking Hallock has 2 boys playing for Augie that stayed start to finish...and their schedule isn't exactly murderer's row.

From my personal experience, the kids that "make it" could've made it from home.  Harper Bentz left Bismarck for Moorhead.  You could tell in Mites that kid was different.  Max Vig, you could tell from a young age he had something special.  And there's plenty of others.

Honestly, there's a right and a wrong for each family and we've seen it work and seen it not work.  At the end of the day, everyone has to make a decision they feel is best for their family.  It's unfortunate that in this day and age with video and off season opportunities, the label still exists.

I don’t follow high school hockey much but to hear of the state of affairs is a downer. Hopefully it doesn’t spread too much to other sports.

Can see why families transfer though if that is the norm.

It's a snowball effect....

a couple go and then everyone else has "keep up with the "Jones" so to say.
