Not trying to get hopes up .... but, as I said on the Sioux Football Insider blog, they also might get caught taking a peak at their next opponent after us -- @ Auburn. Enough for us to at least maybe make the score differential a bit less.

San Diego State, Fresno State, Northern Illinois...UND has come close, its time to get one in the W against the FBS.

UND's mindset should be to go down to California and win this game; after all, that should be the mindset going into every game. I'm not quite sure that was Mussman's mindset, however.

I'm hoping for the W in this initial contest of 2014.

Me, I don't expect a win. I hope for one.

But, I do expect that the UND football team prepares to win every game they play. Hopefully, Bubba has that mindset also and expects that of his team. If he doesn't, it's already time to find his replacement.

I think they are very beatable given the new offensive philosophy we will have. Minnesota pounded the ball down their throats. They're used to playing soft spread offenses not power running offenses. Also with the influx of legit secondary players we may not be as susceptible to the long ball as we were against Fresno St and other FBS teams we've played. I'm really excited about this game and have a good feeling.

I agree. Just like most spread offense Big Sky teams, San Jose State may be susceptible to the physical style of play that Bubba is implementing.

Though I'm not expecting a win, I think it is possible. Their scouting report on us will be a lot different than the product they actually see on the field. So, if we can catch them off guard and get ahead early before they can make adjustments, it's possible IMO.

That is a good point. The team will look totally different this year. If we can finally get the running game going and maybe a turnover or two we have a chance. Unfortunately I need to see it to believe it at this point.

Without #17 escorting players to the end zone we have a chance.

I am so glad we can move on from some of those guys. They would not have lasted one semester under Bubba.

We have absolutely no idea if this team is even capable of resembling a power running team.

I'm aware that is the intent, but it is pure hyperbole to describe this offense that way on July 22nd.

Intent is more than what we have been working with for the last few years. I'll take that as an improvement albeit hypothetical.

In addition to intent, there is reason to believe we may be able to be a physical football team right away in Bubba's first season.

Read my very optimistic preview to see how:

Although it is early, I figured preseason would be the best time to take an optimistic (perhaps overly optimistic) look at the changeover from the 2013 roster to the 2014 roster. All in all, I think the transfers, returning starters, and those who gained valuable playing time last year are the ones who will contribute the most. For starters, however, I think it’s best to just look at the transfers as they are the most likely to surprise.

On offense:

RB Cedric Simmons (So. 6-1, 215)

WR Miguel Cerriteno (Jr. 6-2, 195)

OT Brendan Slaight (Jr. 6-7, 315)

OG/OC Colton Boas (Jr. 6-1, 300)

When I look at the four offensive transfers, and I consider the change in offensive philosophy as well as the increased experience of QBs Mollberg and Bartels, I believe our offense has a chance to be successful.

I envision a nice balanced attack based on the running game of Simmons (and perhaps Patrick Sharp or Adam Shaugabay) behind a potentially good run blocking line. The line will include incumbent starter OG Brandon Anderson but also impressive JUCOS OT Slaight and OG/OC Boas. Throw in former Wisconsin OL Luke Knauf coaching them up, and there is potential for a much improved running game. That will help the offensive efficiency by assisting the QBs/play-action and resting the defense with improved time of possession.

Let’s hope it works out that way!

On defense:

DE Jordan Hinojosa (So. 6-3 275)

ILB Dylan Bakker (Jr. 6-2, 225)

CB Dominique Blackmon (Jr. 6-0, 190)

CB Charles Flowers (So. 5-11, 180)

CB Alex Tillman (Sr. 5-10, 190)

S Chris Hannible (Jr. 6-0, 195)

The defensive transfers, in my opinion, are no slouches. And of course, the coaching staff must also think that or else they wouldn’t have brought them in. Starting up front, I see a very capable defensive lineman in Hinojosa, who definitely possesses FBS ability; he should help the run defense. At LB, Dylan Bakker will likely provide key depth at ILB, but he could eventually sneak into a starter role as well.

The most turnover, and ultimately improvement, occurs in the secondary. Last year there wasn’t a CB who played over 180 lbs. and that severely hurt the physicality of UND’s defense. With Blackmon, Flowers, and Tillman (and possibly freshman Chris Carter), UND should have much improved cover skills and run support in the secondary. Also, Hannbile was specifically mentioned by Bubba Schweigert on signing day as someone he thought could contribute big-time this season. Overall, I see a much improved secondary that should allow for more sacks and more interceptions. With more sacks and turnovers, the defense will only be improved.

Once again, we can only hope it works out this way.

Now, with all this definitely comes a grain of salt (or many grains for that matter). I still only expect the 2014 UND football team to go 5-7 or 6-6 in 2014, but that would still be much improved over 2013’s 3-8. Also, if this year’s team goes near 0.500, there is a very good chance they would continue improving and 2015 would be a winning season. After all, this team is filled with underclassmen; therefore, if they successfully contribute this year, the team should only continue to improve under Bubba’s tutelage.

I'm looking for either Miller or Bell to contribute big time this season. Stockwell should be the LT of the future. I don't know how far away he is from that though since he's had shoulder issues.

Out FB is an absolute stud and should be utilized for more than blocking.

We need to use Adler as a reciver this year. He is capable and is a classic H back.

Norberg and Rattelle should be the backbone of the defense the next two years.

Reyes may start out the gate and be a 4 year stud.

Carter may be the first legit CB recruit we've had since Alexander.

There are players that could contribute this year that weren't able to last year. That plus transfers and new coaches should equal a turnaround this year and a very big turnaround the next season.

It is clear there is a new system and new players being brought in to run it.

So to circle back to the specific thread topic of the SJSU game:

I think playing your FBS game in the very first game when all these changes are being implemented is the worst case scenario. No, I take that back. Another season of Muss' and the gang was the worst case scenario. This scenario is one rung above that, because short of the O and D looking good in this game (highly unlikely), I don't know that I will take much away from this game but getting quality snaps under the players' belts.

Seriously...if the team goes out there and looks bad (highly plausible)...what do you take from that? It's their first game...with a roster full of new starters, transfers, new staff, new system...vs an FBS team...on the road. Heck, if the team were playing at home vs a pioneer league team I would expect them to start slowly.

This is not about diminished expectations. I have high expectations for this program. I really wish the Robert Morris game were the season opener, so we could really evaluate things. The SJSU game is just a bad situation in which to begin the new era with Bubba, but you play what you are dealt.

I just think some folks' expectations of what we will see in game 1 is unrealistic.

You have high expectations on this team?? This is a rebuilding team with a new coaching staff. Muss had this team in a deep hole and it's Bubba's job to get us out of the hole and back on solid ground, Bubba is not a miracle worker and it's not going to be done overnight. Muss had us expecting positive things last year which upped the expectations only to have them crushed every Saturday. If UND gets blown out (ex. Idaho) you try to fix what is broken, but if you win it's against the FBS, and you gain confidence not only in the players but in fans and that will show with attendance. Playing Valpo last year didn't prove anything, playing Drake before that didn't prove anything. Play the FBS and see where you stand against the top level of football.

Enough with the political correctness already.

No one should get upset or discouraged if UND doesn't win or gets blown out in week 1; however, UND has talent and should go into the game with the goal of winning. And because I support UND athletics, I'd rather go into week 1 assessing reasons why UND could win rather than reasons why they could lose.

I'm hoping for UND's first FBS win now that UND is being led by a competent coach in Bubba Schweigert.

It will be a great measure of how good the new staff is at teaching. One positive is I'd bet the defense has the same verbiage as before which should ease the transition for them since returning players can help the transfers get a grasp of the language. On offense is where we will truly see how good the new staff is. This is a new system entirely.

Basically if we come out and look solid expectations should be bumped up a notch. If we come out and look like !@#$ the expectations should brought down to a realistic level. Finally the ultimate measure of this staff will be how much the team improves from game one to the season finale. Most Mussman teams didn't seem to inproce a great deal as the season wore on. Here's to change.

Defense is different in terms of calls. Coverages are different.

I stand corrected. I assumed that since the defense was run by guys coached by Bubba before and is now that it would be borderline the same. Either way defense always adjusts faster to change.
