UND has offered Frank Ryder. Lists himself as a 6'10" Center on his twitter.

Ryder is from Boulder but is enrolled at IMG Academy in Bradenton, FL for his Jr. year. Preferred hockey until just a couple of years ago (when he reached 6'4").

Allen Anderson, who I believe is the brother of Aaron Anderson, will be in town on an unofficial visit this weekend.

EDIT:  He is a 2016 graduate, so he should be noted as such.

New offer:

SG Tyler Peterson, 6'4", 190, Circle Pines (Centennial), MN  Averaged 15 ppg as a sophomore. His consistency last year was somewhat remarkable - there were only two games all season where he wasn't in double figures (scored 7 twice).

Has offer from USD and has visits to SDSU & NDSU scheduled.

First time poster who is a big basketball fan. Definitely more of a UND fan, but I enjoy good basketball so I also watch many NDSU games as well. I think North Dakota has some really good underclassmen coming up that both UND/NDSU should be watching. Most of these kids have already been on campuses at one or both schools for unofficial visits. Jones needs to get these kids in for summer camps and evaluate them. Don’t get me wrong the Twin Cities and Iowa need to be priorities #1 and #2 for this staff, but I think they should take a closer look at some ND kids.

In the last 5 years UND has missed on Luke Martinez (Wyoming), Joe Hanstad (Boise State), Dexter Werner (NDSU), AJ Jacobson (NDSU), Mack Arvidson (Northern State), Justin McCloud (Illinois State), and Tanner Kretchman (MSUM). I’ll throw Aaron Lien from Moorhead who plays at MSUM on the list as well. Martinez and McCloud could’ve been ours out of high school and Arvidson, Kretchman, and Lien will all have great careers in the NSIC. I believe Arvidson and Kretchman were offered “partials,” although I’m not 100% sure. Those 5 would’ve came to UND, redshirted and contributed by the time they graduated. Martinez in particular would’ve been All Big Sky imho. I don’t think we had a chance at Werner or Jacobson as they were all NDSU. I really like the job Jones is doing, but as a UND fan I think these kids could’ve helped, and recruiting these kids is good PR if nothing else.

Houston Lavachek from Glenburn is at Williston State right now and could go D1 too. He reminds me of a less athletic Pat Mitchell. Not completely sold on him, but he still has a redshirt year where UND could bring him in and get him in the weight room for a year before contributing.

I should also mention James Richman being a good pickup for UND. Very very under the radar even by ND standards. He played on a bad HS team but is very athletic.I think he tore his ACL last spring or summer so he is not even close to full strength yet. He is a walk on I could see getting minutes in 3-4 years.

Here are some guys to keep an eye on.

Class of 2016 (HS JRs)

Hunter Pinke - 6-5 F from South Border (I think he is Fred Lukens grandkid so you would think we would have an in) I think he has visited NDSU, not sure on UND.

Braden Hanson - 6-7 F from Red River - I think he has been on unofficial to both NDSU and UND. Probably a better football recruit as he was one of the better football players in the EDC this year.

These two are both young, but right now I would say they are scholarship NSIC guys and potential D1 walk-ons who could develop more by next summer.

Class of 2017 (HS Soph)

Aanan Moody - 6-2 G from Dickinson - Unofficial to both schools, and brother plays FB at NDSU and sister plays VB. NDSU probably has an in there I would think

Siman Sem - 6-2 G from Fargo North - Been to NDSU I know, not sure if UND is involved or not.

Jacob Mertens - 6-2 G from Devils Lake - Brother or cousin to Travis. Not sure how involved UND is but he is a young player to watch.

Wyatt Carr - 6-3 G/F from Hazen - Don’t think either school is on him, but he could be one to watch. Probably one of the top football recruits in that class though. Baylee Carr’s brother.

Moody and Sem are decent prospects and the other two are probably just ones to watch at this point.

Class of 2018

DeSean Eikens - 6-4 F from Williston - I think both UND and NDSU are in contact. He is the best D1 prospect of them all. I think he will go bigger than both by the time he graduates, but they need to be on him now.

There might be a few i’m missing so someone can let me know if I’m missing someone, but UND needs to get these kids to camps the next few summers and evaluate them, so we don’t miss out on guys like Luke Martinez and Justin McCloud when we could’ve easily had them out of high school. I can tell you Dave Richman will be doing this and is already doing a good job of building those ND relationships. Like I said if nothing else it is good PR and I think coach Richman gets that. Again, Twin Cities and Iowa should be the big priorities, but we can't let ND scholarship kids slip away. I follow ND football close to and will post on some of those potential recruits when I get some time in the future.

Sorry for the long post, but I thought it was good info for UND and even NDSU hoop fans

D1 Basketball only allows full athletic scholarship...no partials allowed! Pure guess if  UND could of signed these players Boise, Wyoming  and Ill. St. are a step up from UND  ,play in stronger league....Martinez of Bismarck, N.D., pleaded guilty  to misdemeanor battery and was sentenced to 45 days in jail and ordered to pay $58,000 in restitution(kicked off Team) . Hanstad has done nothing at Boise. The D2 kids are a real crap shoot to think they can play low D1. Pretty much need to star at D2 to be solid at low D1

Well according to my sources, those D2 kids(Kretchman and Lein) and their MSUM teammates ran UND out of The Betty the other day in a closed door game scrimmage.

You are correct. By partial I meant scholarship for 1-2 years, walk on for the rest. I think Arvidson might’ve been offered something like that, but Northern had a full.  I do not know specifics, but I think if Kretchman would’ve waited UND might’ve offered a full in the spring, but MSUM needed an answer in the fall or they were moving forward. UND hadn’t offered yet at the time, but I think they might’ve eventually based on what i’ve heard. Full rides at Northern State and MSUM are a pretty good deal and both probably made the right decisions. I know NDSU was recruiting both a little as well, but not sure if they were close to offering. All of that is from people I know so take it for what its worth.

As for Martinez and McCloud I was just basing that guess off the fact they went to Juco’s out of high school. Just a guess they would’ve chosen a D1 offer over a Juco assuming grades and everything else were in check. And yes I know about Martinez’s troubles, I was just talking about basketball talent.

As for D1 vs. D2 I agree to a certain extent, but the NSIC is very good. I watch a lot of NSIC, Summit, and Big Sky and the top guys in the NSIC can play in the Big Sky or Summit. Aaron Lien averaged almost 10 a game on one of the best D2’s in the country last year. If he was at UND he would be a redshirt Fr. and I think he would be getting minutes this year and probably starting next year. I watched both him and AJ Jacobson in high school and Lien isn’t that far behind Jacobson.

Anyways, point of the post was to show there has been a little bit of talent in ND/Northwest MN the last few years and there are some guys to keep an eye on that UND and NDSU are both showing "some," interest in.

Aanen Moody unofficialed at UND twice and really is high on the current staff. Could see him going either way.

Wyatt Carr unofficialed at NDSU homecoming and will attend a UND basketball game this season on his visit.

6'10" 2017 Jordan Meidinger of Dickinson also one to watch. Was at NDSU homecoming with Carr and 6'5" Justin Engg of Minot.

De'Sean Allen-Eikens has been on the phone with UND, but will likely end up a high major.

UND has been doing a good job of getting in touch with the young ND kids, in my opinion.

Lien averaged 7.9 pts last year closer to 6 than 10. UND had one scholly gave that year and it went to Mn. Mr . Basketball award winner Q. Hooker who had several D1 offers. Lien had zero D1 offers. If UND had 4 schollys available Lien could have been on their radar . One can cherry pick....and  in hindsight and always find kids that teams missed Lien could end up a better player than Hooker! Tubby Smith did not offer MN.kid Nate Wolters who made the NBA and ended up  a better player than anybody on the Gophs. Notre Dame only beat Duluth by 17 in exhibition basketball ...these games mean little. UND has one guy who averaged over 4.5 pts a game back so yeah an experienced ,good D2 team beat them in a glorified pick up game early in the season .  I am sure that UND Staff would love to get locals players however the pickings have been slim lately and NDSU is tough to beat for local players , and some kids want to play at a higher level or in a different state.

balla45 & nodakhoops - we certainly appreciate the insight you two have provided regarding talented ND HS playerss.  Please keep it coming!

I am sure one of your primary sources for this info is AAU ball.  From what you have seen, are there any other area kids (Upper Midwest) that UND or SU may have an interest in recruiting a year (or two or three) from now?  No need to mention any athletes that will undoubtedly opt for a major.  Thanks!

UND didn't "miss" on any of these kids, especially the two from NDSU.  They didn't offer them and neither did anybody else (sans Cal-Poly who apparently offers everybody).  UND doesn't need guys that go 0-X from the field every 4th game.

Point was to give people some local kids to keep an eye on and show ones from the area that have recently went D1 (higher than Big Sky level in some cases) or were borderline D1 talents. By miss I didn't mean offer, I meant they missed. Luke Martinez was a All Mountain West caliber player out of Bismarck high, being he was 2-3 hours from campus growing up I would say both UND and NDSU missed the boat on him. All situations and recruiting years are different and I get that, I was just giving people players to watch. Thanks to Balla45 for further updating us and letting us know where UND has specific interest.

As for the two at NDSU I would agree with Werner although I don't think UND would've had a chance had they offered (big NDSU fan growing up), but I have tough time thinking UND couldn't use a 6'6 wing who is averaging 10 a game as a freshman on a middle of the pack Summit team. His mom played at NDSU and while UND didn't "offer," I think they possibly could've been told very early on, "don't waste your time, i'm not interested." His sister is also one of the best girls BB players in the state right now and I hope Brewster can pull that out, but i'm guessing it will be tough with the family ties to NDSU. She might go bigger than both though. This probably was the other way with players like Brandon Brekke, and Emily Evers who had strong ties to the UND programs.

My glasses are more kelly green, but not green enough to think some kids are sometimes just interested in going NDSU. This also goes the other way like I said. Not trying to argue, but your comment came across like an NDSU fan who thinks they never lose any FB recruits to UND, or when they do they "didn't offer them."

DeLaSalle, MN (Josh Collins) vs North Scott, IA (Cortez Seales)

De 29 - NS 35 Half

De 64- NS 67 Final

Josh Collins 3pt-5/9, 2pt-1/2, 17pts.

After two misses from behind the arc, he ran off three in a row, missed another, and made a fourth before the half ended. Likes the corner. His fifth three came in the final minute of the game when De was down six, pulled up and drained it. Defensively played very physical in post when needed, and got low and wide when defending outside, was quite fast laterally. Good all around game.

Cortez Seales 3pt-2/2, 2pt-8/10, FT-7/7 29pts (15 first half). Wow! Player of the Game. De upped the defensive pressure in second half and it was getting to his team. De tied the game and he put his team on his back. When they needed a score he went to his move, also three times in a row. Left wing or elbow, drive to the block and finished with the ball going off left side glass and in. Always against a defender, sometimes two. He did not finish right, he actually missed one of his shots on right side trying to finish left, but he didn't need to go that way, he was just so strong with the ball. Defensively, he also defended the post well when needed, banging in the paint. Top side defense was very good, creating a couple turnovers and getting a block straight up on a drive from his guy. Rebounded very well also, attacking the rim and going up strong and grabbing it.

Both players look to be very nice additions to the basketball program with different styles of play.

I take back my statement from above. After watching several NDSU games this year I am now 100% positive UND could've used both local kids Werner and Jacobson on their team this year. Werner makes up for his lack of size with long arms and effort. I think he leads the Summit league in block shots. Those two are a big part of why NDSU is on top of the Summit League right now.

Nice Ally-Oop Slam by recruit Josh Collins. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LZDEVZDztFk#t=159.  Needs a lot of work on his skills but pretty good athlete. The other bright spot for DeLaSalle was Joshua Collins, who ended the day with 15 points. The senior stuck out from the rest of the Islanders’ squad not only because of his play, but because of his wardrobe.

The only player on the DeLaSalle roster choosing not to don black socks, Collins rocked grey socks with a bright green University of North Dakota logo to showcase his pride for his future school and basketball team.

“I have to represent NoDak,” Collins said. “I’m going to be up there next year. I wore them early in the season and stopped, but I decided to pull them out. It was a big game, and everybody was here. These are my Big Game Socks.”

Collins also offered some insight on when he plans to wear the socks again.

“You’ll see them in the state tournament,” he said.

Hoopniks on Bernstine.....

  • Roderick Bernstine, 6′-6″, 2013, SF, Colorado Miners/Cherokee Trail (CO) – The son of a former NFL player, Bernstine is a lithe and fluid athlete on the wing. He was the beneficiary of two terrific passers on his squad, touted 2014 guard Josh Perkins and point guard Eric Garcia, and used their ability to set him up, as he shined. Bernstine has legitimate lift near the basket, and showed signs of being able to put the ball on the floor and attack. His frame has still not filled out, but he is an intriguing wing prospect as he had some touch from the mid-range......6'5 SF Roderick Bernstine of Cherokee Trail (CO) announced he committed to Denver. NFL bloodlines, athletic combo forward slasher..... Signed D1 offer as 6'5 /6'6" Sr.... He is now 6'8"...late growth spurt, athleticism and skill set make the 3rd year So.  A prospect for true UND basketball fans to keep an eye on this summer. With talented PGs Crandall and Hooker he might flourish.

Desean Allen Eikens won't end up at UND or NDSU.  He's far and away the best player in the state this year and he's only a freshman.  Leads the state in scoring and is second in rebounding.  6'5 G/SF.  He's going to be the best player this state has produced since Boschee.  Sad to say it because I would love to see him in kelly green but he's going to be getting recruited by the big boys in the Big Ten and Big 12.
