SiouxVolley Posted December 2, 2014 Posted December 2, 2014 Alabama Birmingham set to drop football. Who is conference USA going to look at as a replacement?Georgia St would be the favorite if CUSA only followed media size. Ga St has pathetic athletic teams and low support in Atlanta. La-La and maybe Ark St fit athletically but don't help CUSA media markets. CUSA would be wise to add strong programs, not media markets. Georgia So would be a good program in a state that CUSA needs. JMU wants in to be with ODU. Guess they can claim a tiny bit of the D.C. market. Rumors are that the UAT board wants to shut down the UAB undergraduate programs too and add the students to Tuscaloosa's campus. Bear Bryant Jr has a major vendetta against the deceased Gene Bartow, who built UAB athletics programs. Its crap like the that makes me despise the Tide. They are so underhanded. Bryant has to retire soon and it's his last chance to kill a dead man. 1 Quote

SiouxVolley Posted December 5, 2014 Posted December 5, 2014 http://www.espn929.com/pages/20457311.php Rumors are that Cincinnati and Memphis will be offered spots in the Big 12. FedEx has some pretty big support behind Memphis and Cincinnati has always been thought of as a natural bridge to WVU as well as a high caliber research school. If this happens, the AAC would dip into CUSA or maybe the MAC (NIU, Toledo, or Akron could go there), Potentially three more spots in CUSA or MAC, so JMU and Mo St have to be pretty happy that they turned down the Sun Belt last years as they would be leadings contenders for CUSA or the MAC. UAB might be able to stay in CUSA as a non-football team, so CUSA has to balance UAB out with another non-football team, like Wichita State. So potentially, the MVC could be down to eight and would need to backfill from the Slummit, OVC, or Horizon. ORU, Belmont, Ill-Chi, UMKC, Valpo and Murray St would be the leading contenders for a MVC spot. Quote

SiouxVolley Posted December 8, 2014 Posted December 8, 2014 For a good belly laugh, go to Bville, where they think FU has a good shot of Big 12 membership. Their reasoning is that ISU and KSU would support a fellow.land grant and have their football respect! If only the state of ND would get behind them and build a new campus near Wayzata. The MVC won't look at them but the Big 12 would! Quote

SiouxVolley Posted December 8, 2014 Posted December 8, 2014 The Big 12 is most likely only interested in Cincinnati and Memphis. They tried to get BYU before WVU, but the Mormon church put up too many road blocks. Memphis isn't a research school. Colo St or even UCF have better academics. UNM might be under consideration. Then why would he write it? He must have thought about it and obviously didn't completely dismiss it. NDSU fans seem to "not be serious" alot on message boards about their FBS chances. Quote

NDSU fans seem to "not be serious" alot on message boards about their FBS chances. You must remember, FU fans already think Fargo = Minneapolis, so the next logical step is to promote the pipe dream of FU = B1G or FU=Big 12. I think the Sun Belt is the most logical home for an FBS FU team and that is bottom of the barrel. If FU is smart (yeah, I know, oxymoron), they'll stick to FCS. Quote

ONE poster said NDSU could make a strong case due to sports offered, geographic footprint, and academics, but the state of ND would have to get behind NDSU big time and that would never happen. Another poster asked him if he was serious and he said no, that basically his point was that even if a conference like the Big 12 was interested it would take a gigantic investment from the state for it to happen and that's impossible. My main point was that there is not anybody on Bisonville claiming NDSU has a shot at Big 12 membership. Nobody. Zero, Zilch, Zamboni. Quote

UND-1 Posted December 8, 2014 Posted December 8, 2014 On KFAN this morning I heard them say that any new team needs to show they generate 22 million dollars in revenue before they get an invitation to the Big 12. They based that on what each team is getting via the new TV contract. Quote

Crap, does Iowa State fit that criterion? Quote
jdub27 Posted December 8, 2014 Posted December 8, 2014 Interesting. So that would be ticket sales, advertising, and revenue generated from potential TV viewers? SiouxVolley Posted December 8, 2014 Posted December 8, 2014 Interesting. So that would be ticket sales, advertising, and revenue generated from potential TV viewers? Crap, does Iowa State fit that criterion? The Big 12 generates $220 million from their Tier 1 (and Tier 2 I think) contracts. The national contract would have to increase by $44 million if two teams are added, so the other schools don't get diluted. Texas has its own Longhorn Network (Tier 3) that pays only Texas like over $20 mill a year. The rest of the Big 12 want Texas to convert that to a Big 12 Network, with Texas still getting the bulk of it depending on cable and satellite revenue. The two new schools would have to add $44 mill to the national TV contracts. But keep in mind just adding a CCG nets almost $24 mill, so each school essentially has to add $10 mil in value. The American (UConn, Cincy, Memphis etc) only pays out $2 mill a team, so the hurdle for those schools can be met if their networks deem that P5 status elevates the value of Cincy or Memphis that much. The Big 12 could also negotiate a longer contract, but the big money schools probably wouldn't like that. Getting P5 status for a G5 school is like getting a major annuity. Utah, TCU, and Louisville can upgrade their facilities much more easily now. Quote

So I would presume this would be a case where market is the number one priority for expansion. I would think Cincy is a shoe-in. Who's the 12th? Quote

jdub27 Posted December 8, 2014 Posted December 8, 2014 $62 million in total athletic department revenue, or just from football? Total athletic department. 50th in the nation in 2013. Their football department had something like $31 million of revenues in 2013 attributed to it. Quote

So does the American back fill to stay with 11 or add 3 to go 12? I presume they go after C-USA schools, but looking at that list of schools it doesn't look very attractive. Quote
