Conference Realignments - Take 2

Shifting gears here I saw BSC football war zone post on Facebook that Alaska-Anchorage is looking at adding FCS Football and bidding to join the BSC. Anyone see this or find out any more information?

They have an enrollment of 20,000 students so in my opinion they are certainly a viable candidate. Hopefully they can help with travel expenses for other teams like they have done with hockey in the past. Obviously more details would need to be worked out here but what are everyones thoughts on this?

Road trip!

Denver is biding it's time at best.. the Summit/Denver match-up for sports is limited (Denver participates in 6 of the 11 SL sports) and Denver joined because they weren't required to add sports like other conferences would have required and the WAC fell apart. It is a convenient arrangement for both parties involved. Hell, Denver's most successful sports aren't in the SL (Hockey, Gymnastics, Lacrosse, and skiing). Summit still has to be nervous with Fort Worth and Indy looking for other options. ORU came back because the Southland fell apart. So, the two schools you are so proud of joining the SL really just "settled".

So, what conference Does line up with Denver's sports? None, None, and None . . . So what difference does that make. Denver is not going to find a conference that lines up with its sports period. If hockey is it's most important sport, great. What conference has hockey? B1G, is the B1G going to add Denver? No

The most important sport for Denver in joining any all-sport conference is Basketball. I think Denver did about as well as it could related to conference strength and geography in joining the Summit.

Would NDSU trade an FCS banner for a dance trip?

When you got a whole bunch of banners, sure give one up, no big deal. The most publicity for NDSU is in the following order. Basketball having the bigger upside vs. Football.

  1. Basketball - NCAA Tournament (Round 1 Win(if))
  2. Football - DI FCS Champion
  3. Basketball - NCAA Tournament Appearance
  4. Football - FCS Playoffs
  5. Basketball - regular Season
  6. Football - regular season

The reason I rip the Slummit League is because at any given time half of their members are looking for a better conference home. And a lot of their schools are in places where the local media and sports fans are focused on other things (larger colleges, professional teams, etc). The whole Men's RPI argument is a strawman because both the SL and the BSC are one-bid leagues.

The Summit League borders the MVC, Horizon, OVC, MAC and the Southland to name a few. There are opportunities and movement in these conferences.

The BSC borders the WAC (worst DI league), and the PAC (no chance) and MWC (no chance).

The teams in the BSC, except for maybe NC or ND, have nowhere to go. So, if you want to define "No Options" as stable, you are using the term stable loosely.

You vastly underestimate the importance of "teh hockies" to the alumni, and budgets, of those two.

You vastly overestimate hockey for Denver. The same would be true of any school that was DI and honest with itself.

NCAA DI Basket Round 1 Win > NCAA DI Hockey Title

Exposure-wise yes. But but fan/alumni support? Not so sure. They average over 50% fans more for hockey than they do for basketball.

When was the last time the BSC was in danger of losing an autobid due to too many teams leaving for other conferences? I define that as stable.

You are correct. My cousin played LAX for DU and he said that the support for hockey dwarfs their other sports...and they are pretty good at LAX.

Wait...are you saying your basketball program has more publicity than your football program during the regular season?

Movement for who? NDSU? Nobody wants you, remember when the MVC had a spot open nobody wanted a Dakota team, the MAC yeah right, they will take the Indy teams before any Dakota team same with the OVC and Horizon face it NDSU's option is about as limited as UND except UND doesn't need to go anywhere unless it's the MWC, NDSU is stuck in the SL praying no one else bolts, but at least they have football.

True story. Success on the field carries almost no weight when being considered to move up to FBS. Money that can be generated from said schools media market is what matters. IMO not the best ways to do things but the reality is the Dakota's do not have those markets now or anytime soon.

When was the last time a BSC team was invited anywhere, other than the new WAC? I attribute that to geography and mediocracy. Where would any of these team go, and who would want any of these teams based on their location and quality? The WAC is terrible, and the MWC is unatainable. So if you'd like to pat yourself on the back and define no opportunity for movement as stable, have at it.

With the Summit adding ORU and moving forward, there are no autobid issues, and the Summit will be right there with the MVC and Horizon in the coming years. The Big Sky is fat and happy as a stable conf, and solidly in the bottom tier.

Sagarin Rated Conferences: (current)

12 MVC

13 Horizon

14 Summit

Boise St, BSC-Big West-WAC-MWC

Cal St-Northridge BSC-Big West

Gonzaga BSC-WCC

Idaho BSC-Big West-Sun Belt-WAC-Ind

Nevada BSC-Big West-WAC-MWC

Only 5 teams have departed the BSC since it was started in 1963

SL 1982 had 22 teams leave (21 when ORU comes back). Face it the SL is the Great West Conference 2.0

Until the Summit gets more than 1 bid, it doesn't matter. Their rating is propped up from playing (and losing to) more higher ranked teams. The conferences winning percentage against top 100 teams is almost identical. The tournament committee obviously sees no difference between the leagues as the one team that makes it from the conference are always seeded exactly the same or within 1 seed.
