  1. WOW. I knew it was up there but I did not know women's hockey actually costs that much and that was from 2014. If you look at the total revenues Softball and Soccer generate almost as much profit but combine don't even come close to WHockey budget. I don't know how you don't look at a report like that and not give serious consideration to dropping that sport. Based on 2014 numbers you lose 40k in revenue but you cut 1.3 million in costs. You don't need a math degree to figure that out. Just looking at all of that, if UND dropped 4 sports and got to 15 like Bin mentioned you would hardly lose any revenue but would cut around 2.5-3 million in costs. Imagine what the remaining programs could do with that extra money.
  2. Guessing your not that old. Others can back this up but have you ever heard of Hyslop Hysteria? There was a point in time when basketball was a bigger deal than Hocley and this is when UND was D1 in hockey and D2 in basketball. If UND basketball ever can make multiple trips to the dance maybe even sneek out a win I could see the Betty selling out quite frequently. You make it seem like this is an awful basketball market and awful place to coach basketball. If funded properly and with some success I think we could be a great mid major. Look at how Bubba uses that hockey support and embraces it to try and get fans to his games. You can either make excuses or find the positives at UND and make them work to your advantage. Plenty of potential for UND hoops in both program growth and fan interest moving forward.
  3. Never seen one but the 4 sports that could be cut are those and I have been told women's hockey budget is more than that 1.4 million, and guessing M&W S&D is more than softball's budget. I don't think I am off base in saying women's hockey and swimming and diving cost more than softball. Could be wrong though. Like I mentioned, objectively that is the easiest cut and dry way to solve the problem. S&D offset each other and if women's hockey budget is that big any business owner looking to cut costs would look at what the cost is vs. ROI and say this just doesn't work. So back to the original point of the easiest way to solve the issue long term, it's cut women's hockey and men's & women's swimming and diving. Budget solved, to many conferences problem solved and title 9 compliant. Dont like it, but I'd rather UND sponsor 15-16 sports like NDSU and be good across the board rather than keep stretching our dollars out for 19-20 sports and being mediocre to horrible in some.
  4. Looking at it objectively and if I was in charge the easiest way to save money and simplify conferences is to cut WHockey & M&W S&D. You lose 0 revenue and probably make all of that 1.4 million and then some. You would also now have teams in only the Big Sky and NCHC. Budget solved, conference affiliation solved. Those throwing title 9 are wrong. Those scholarships can just be reallocated to other women's sports like track. UND is very title 9 compliant from what I've been told I'd prefer to not cut any sports but that right there is the easiest way to solve this. Softball is the other option, but if it brings in the same revenue as the others ($0), why wouldn't you cut the ones that cost the most. That's how good efficient businesses are run. If you cost the most and bring in little ROI your job is in jeopardy when cuts need to be made.
  5. It looks like KFGO is really stepping their game up with UND coverage which is awesome. Question I have is I think I have seen more from KFGO in one month than the local Grand Forks affiliate ever. not complaining just saying it sure seems like KFGO is acting more like the flagship station not just an affiliate. Hats off to Joel, Jack and everyone there for jumping on full board with UND!! Time for clear channel to up their game.
  6. I love the interlocking ND and the tradition with the old helmets but I think the new design is fantastic. Nice job Bubba!
  7. Not sure limiting coverage is a smart move. Few bad years and you might regret that. I know UND doesnt have a forum contract but Bubba and UND should invite Fargo Forum people up to GF to cover UND games. What better way for the forum to stick it to NDSU then to send koplack izzo and mcfeely up to UND to do a pre game show with miller and schlossman and cover und games. That and start putting UND games on the front page in fargo. I'd love to see forum comm step up their UND football coverage. The job Bubba has done deserves more exposure & coverage from them in the paper and on tv anyways.
  8. Great get. Looks like Disterhaupt 2.0 to me. We sure like the small town MN boys at OLB. Labat, Disterhaupt, Lawrence, Turner and now Bungum.
  9. Just using UND & NDSU in the last few years. 1 D1 offer kids who turned out ok. Ben Woodside Brett Winkelmann Mike Nelson Taylor Braun Lawrence Alexander Marshall Bjorkland Dexter Werner Troy Huff Jamal Webb Aaron Anderson Brandon Brekke Josh Schuler Geno Crandall probably more if I looked into it but a pretty good list of high caliber players. Off the top off my head I believe Chad Calceterra and Shanks were 2-3 star recruits with lots of offers. Nothing against either of them and Shanks still has time but there is 7-8 pro players on that list above. How many offers does it take for a recruit to be legit in your mind?
  10. Tons of exceptions to the rule in every college sport on every college campus. I would say offers mean even less at the level UND is at for basketball and football especially. I could make a list of 80-100 kids over the last ten years at just UND and NDSU in those 2 sports that were walk ons or only had 1 offer that turned out to be nice contributers, starters, all conference and professionals. Pretty much every kid at this level is under the radar. It matters what they do when they get to school.
  11. Really nice player. Will probably break the scoring record this season. His JR season numbers were more impressive than Jeff Bouschee Nick Jacobson or Tanner Kretchmans big Sr years in class A and Moody's was just his Jr year. We all know the kind of players the first two were and Kretchmans was the #2 scorer on a top 5 D2 team and could easily be getting minutes at a D1 school. Pretty good company and he hasn't even played his Sr. Year. Nice bonus - both siblings were NDSU athletes. Time for mom and dad to swap that out for UND gear to watch Aanen play here.
  12. Speaking of 2016 QB recruits. Anyone know if Dalton Feeney is still going to Missouri for baseball with the coaching change there? Bubba might want to make a call there to double check just incase he might still want to give football a try. His dad played for UND.
  13. West Fargo NG Brandon Metz committed to NDSU. Said a scholarship for wrestling and walk on for football but I believe he needs to be on football scholarship if he's getting anything. Not sure if UND offered him but they probably would have eventually....nice player. I would expect his teammate Zach Willis to follow him and verbal to SU shortly.
  14. Like this guy a lot. Think this is a home run hire.
  15. Really don't want to read through this thread. Will just say the logo is good enough for me and that I wish the hockey coaches/team would step up and be leaders with this. They get behind it and others will follow. If they want to see what a leader looks like in this situation the can walk over to memorial stadium and find a bunch of them.
  16. Article seems a little slanted which being from an SU site should be no surprise. Title mentions he's hoping for a UND or NDSU offer but article talks exclusively about ndsu. He had to have spoke about UND with a title like that. My guess is the UND quotes were left off the story. Regardless I love this kids tape and feel he's the type of tough hard nose ND kid the staff should be on. Hope to see him in Kelly Green in the fall of 2018.
  17. Town is maybe 20 miles from the ND border so he's pretty much about as close to an ND kid as you can get. Hope he comes here. Reminds me a lot of Jade Lawrence from Moorhead who will play a lot this fall. Could be a RB/FB/LB but he's just a flat out football player. Can't have enough of those
  18. No a million times over on both the name champions and changing names again. Fighting Hawks doesn't even have a logo yet. UND is never going back to the Sioux and bringing up other names is a waste of time. Wasn't my first choice by any means but Fighting Hawks is just fine. Let's get a sweet logo and move on. #WingsUp
  19. I never said what they were going to lose. I was using that number to compare putting that amount into enhancements at the Betty since that is the gaurantee they have to pay. I hope the numbers do come ok for REA and they can chalk this up as a success, it just doesn't seem like it is in my opinion, or many others I've read seen and heard from.
  20. I know Duke or Kansas aren't coming for BBall I was just saying REA probably would've gotten better return on something like that vs. this tourney. As for keeping REA on the worldwide hockey map I have seen more comments from writers about poor attendance and pictures of empty seats on websites than anything else about this tourney so I'm not 100% sure it's been that great. I have been offered and seen free tickets all over the place. Not usually a sign of an event doing well, usually means their desperate to get people there. At the end of the day I want REA to succeed because that is good for UND. I'll stick by my statement that helping elevate UND MBB to the point they are selling out the Betty will do more for their bottom line long term than one time things like this. Your right that growing basketball won't come from giving it to other programs but 1.2 million could have made some nice enhancements at the Betty to help start that process of elevating MBB who like you agreed with has a ton of room for revenue growth long term.
  21. Just an idea that is non hockey. Seems like it's either hockey or concert with REA and as discussed these non UND men's hockey events don't draw. I thought I heard the gaurantee for this was 1 million, that's a lot of money they are probably losing on this. You could probably pay Duke or Kansas less than that to come in and play UND and come out ahead plus you are elevating the UND MBB program. IMO the best long term revenue potential REA has over the next 30-40 years after men's hockey is UND MBB. If that program got to the point of Creighton, Northern Iowa, Florida Golf Coast, etc REA would be making a lot of money on both UND men's hockey and MBB. Their #1 goal after selling out every men's hockey game should be to elevate UND MBB to top mid major status. 15 home basketball games a year of 4000-5000 plus would do much much more for their bottom line than these lowly attended money losing 1 time hockey events. Trouble is that no one there can see that IMO.
  22. Couldn't agree more. People show up for UND men's hockey and not much else when it comes to the sport. Worlds Jrs in 2005 was a perfect storm with NHL lockout and having a phenoms like Ovi and Sid. State Hockey, UND women's hockey, AHL games, U18s this year all poorly attended. I also consider NCAA regionals as a UND men's game as I know that was well attended. I wish REA would recognize this put more energy into trying to host something like NCAA basketball tourney games. North Dakota is a big basketball state and having big dance games at the REA and in the state would be a big deal. I'd start trying to host women's tourney games with the goal of hosting men's games down the road. Would be a way bigger deal than this U18 tourney . Sioux Falls new arena is a great example of doing this. REA needs to open their eyes to more than just hockey.
  23. They've some great wins this year. There's a sport who deals with the same weather as baseball. Still to bad we won't get to watch the baseball program continue to grow like softball is.
  24. You are either joking or have NO clue about college athletics. UND has more potential in MBB for national exposure than pretty much any sport on campus men's hockey and football included.
  25. I agree locally whky has a little bigger following but I don't think it's much and they also get promoted and covered WAY more. I'd rank UNDspirts following as such. 1.Mhockey 2. FB 3. MBB 4. WBB 5. volleyball 6. Women's hockey 7. Baseball pretty much everything else after. when you think about all the exposure potential out there for baseball and the low cost it had on the department I don't see why it should've been cut. UND has played baseball for a very long time and there are a lot of proud alums of that program. I 100% don't think the right decision was made cutting that program.
