  1. Sorry Hawk E I could've went with the 15-20 other universitites that have also did this but just decided on Marquette. Would Stanford, Miami, ULM, eastern Michigan been better? Are you unhappy with the names or just the fact No nickname isn't an option? Big difference in my opinion. If there was another actual nickname the masses wanted I guess I didn't see it throughout the process. There are probably 50-100 I would've been ok with, and of the last 5 I can live with 4 like 3 and prefer 1-2. I would encourage you to email if you don't like the choices but you really should've did that sooner. Again big difference between standing up about the nickname choices than standing up because no nickname isn't an option.
  2. That's not the goal at all Petey. My point was there are 5 names left you can either get behind one and vote or you can live with what happens in the vote. There are 5 names left what are the other options? I guess you can sit back and sulk and complain, but there was no new goal with what I said. Simply saying there are 5 names left and I think people should get behind one they like or can live with because if not we might just end up with Sundogs.
  3. Siouxstudent- if you don't like the Wild reference how about a division one college? Marquette University used to be the Warriors and in the late 80s early 90s (can't remember exact date) they changed to golden eagles for similar reasons to this. Now it's tough for an old guy like me to even remember them as the Warriors now and even by the late 90s it was tough to remember that. Now, imagine if they would have waited until say 2005 to change their name. They would've lost out on 15-20 years of marketing as the golden eagles when a lot of people by that time had already forgotten they were the Warriors. That is the exact same situation at a school with a much bigger profile than UND. That's a Big East basketball school. You might be a student now but the student at UND in 4-8 years will only know UND as the fighting Hawks, Roughriders or whatever. School traditions at games change over time, and as the years go on new students will create new cheers and traditions. Things done at games now are much different than when I was in school and will be much different down the road. Better to change it now than down the road, there has been 5-10 years to mourn the Sioux name it's been beaten to death. The quicker UND gets through the initial bumps in the road the quicker people can move on. I'd rather do this now than in 15-20 years with the potential of this fighting Sioux controversy still hanging over our heads. I say all that as someone who lived and breathed the Sioux name. As I've said before, go Fighting Sioux, go UND, and go whatever name is picked (except Sundogs)
  4. I think you missed the point. I never said a new nickname would be a rallying point, I said rally around one of the five so we don't end up with one like Sundogs because no nickname isn't on the list for you fighting sioux forever people. I also still expect many people to continue to wear their sioux gear, and I will be one of those as I have closet full of it. The point was about moving forward. Yes there will be bumps in the road, but it's better to move forward now than 20 years from now. Do you think Minnesota Wild was a great choice 15 years ago, I thought it stunk personally, but guess what 15 years later after 15 years of branding and marketing it isn't to bad.
  5. It's been said already but this has really shown the vast majority that want no nickname just wanted it to remain fighting Sioux. I think everyone should consider what would happen if that were the case. The same nickname controversy hampster wheel we've been on for the past 20 years will continue going. There were probably groups ready if that happened. That is not something we need, we need to move forward. i think at this point people need to rally around what ever name they like best for UND whatever that is of the five. If Sundogs only has 10 percent of the vote there is no way Kelly picks it.
  6. Ditto on Commie. Love the guy but he is not even in the same ballpark when it comes to who I would trust more on a committee like this. Lowell is UND through and through. Commie should think a little more before hitting send on that.
  7. The best decision was made for the long term future of UND tonight. Thanks to the 7 people on the committee that undertsood that. The fighting Sioux forever crowd will throw their temper tantrum but eventually they/we will all move on. I'd take Roughriders Northstars or maybe fighting Hawks out of the 5 with Roughriders being my favorite. Glad we can all move forward from the Sioux name now. Go Fighting Sioux and go whatever name we choose moving forward. Nicknames come and go UND lasts forever.
  8. I liked Hartleys potential a lot and don't like seeing him gone. The two big cbs looked good on paper but since they never got here we really don't know what we missed. UND-FB-FAN is correct that attrition is a part of college football and that is a big reason why local guys that work hard and wait their turn are extremely important to the program for depth. Guys that came in as walk ons in that two deep like Seibel, Schmitz, and Olson are good examples of that. Other than that pre camp depth charts are pretty meaningless. Just something to talk about.
  9. I think there were 7 D1 recruits in the FM metro last year with Johanasson (UM) Brooks, Fort (NDSU) and Lawrence, Hartness twins (UND). There was also a good amount of D2 & D3 kids. Anyways, out of all that talent after Johanasson I would put Lawrence at the top of the list. The young man is a flat out football player. He'll be a nice player for UND whether it's OLB RB FB special teams, but I agree OLB should be the first priority. Need more hard nosed team first local guys like Jade Lawrence in the program. Can't have enough of them.
  10. I get what your saying 82 I just don't see all this red river pride when I go into businesses in GF or when I'm in GF like I see in smaller communities. I see a lot of UND stuff but not Red River. Red river doesn't have this huge fan base/following that is going to be mad about UND taking their name from what I've gather. Most of the red river people I've talked with actually like that UND is considering that name because they already like that name. Some posters have mentioned it on here even. I am also a fan of the name North Stars but to me choosing the state nickname and a former NHL team name from our neighbors is a way worse branding decision than taking a local high school teams name. Red River is just a high school, it's not even in the conversation of carrying the same type of name recognition UND does in GF or in the state. We can agree to disagree on that.
  11. The high school argument does not make sense to me at all.......these are high schools? They don't play in front of crowds of 2,000-12,000 people like UND does. Their not on national TV like UND is, they don't have 15,000 students and 100,000 some alumni. The townies that are making a big deal about that need to realize there is much more to this state/region than the little Grand Forks bubble. UND reaches beyond the borders of Grand Forks and even the state of ND. if Fargo North wanted to change their name to the Bison few would care. They are high schools where most of the crowds are parents and grandparents of players. If that is an issue I suggest you travel outside of Grand Forks county more.
  12. Tillman is doing some nice things for BC. Good to see. In other news Dressler did Dressler things last night (2 tds) but Tillmans BC team got the better of the Riders. I'm also surprised no one has picked Hardin up in the CFL yet. Congrats to Tillman though! That guy was fantastic for UND last year.
  13. I think the great thing about Roughriders is that it doesn't have to be tied to Roosevelt if you don't want it to. Look how the CFL team uses it. You could have a Roughrider logo with a soldier on a horse with nothing referencing Roosevelt at all. That's one of the main reason I like that name is the logo and marketing possibilities are fantastic. Having said that I would certainly tie it somewhat to Roosevelt if I was UND. If the guy is good enough to put on MT. Rushmore and good enough to have a national park named after him I think he is ok is most people's eyes. He's one of the most recognizable and respected individuals in American and maybe more importantly North Dakota history. Taking one or two quotes of his and making a big stink about it seems rather petty. George Washington had his own flaws and he has an entire University named after him. Google Roosevelt quotes and you will find hundreds used for inspiration, motivation and pride. Many hang on frames in people's homes offices and in many buildings in North Dakota.
  14. Wow, very impressive. This will have a big impact on not only recruiting but also athlete development. I think baseball, soccer, and softball will also benefit a great deal. Looks plenty high enough to take fly balls in. I wonder if they could break phase 2 up into separate chunks so they don't have to wait for all the money before starting construction. First phase football offices, locker rooms, weight room, study room, lounge. Second phase track locker room whatever other offices and amenities were going there. Just thinking if the total price tag on phase 2 is 12 million and you broke it up into two 6 million dollar phases you could start construction on part of it sooner. Football success is probably what will drive donations for this so that is why I put finishing their area first a bigger priority than the rest. They start making the playoffs regularly those donations come easier.
  15. Very cool. Hope that helps him get signed. For the baseball haters, this season is a prime example of why baseball is a great sport for UND to have. There is great opportunity for exposure with baseball. 2 (probably 3 now) guys drafted or signed by mlb clubs, win over a pac12 school and a big performance on prime time ESPN television by Campbell. Great exposure for the program and university. I think the HPC will help baseball a lot too.
  16. Thanks. Not to concerned about it now with it only being July just curious if you heard. Either way we have Midco, Big Sky TV and NCHC TV but I like when we get on FSN north. It's good for the University.
  17. I think UND will be ok with only 2 pg. For a few years Webb and Anderson were the only pg and they both started. You just have to stagger their substitutionsa little. Once UND gets into half court it really doesn't matter with their offense. Seales might be able to give some minutes there too. Also while I agree TDR brought great energy to the game on the defensive end I think he was far to over aggressive on defense. The energy and hustle were great but the dumb fouls kind of negated that IMO. Also agree it's to late to replace. Give it to a walk on this year and save it for a 4 year guy next year.
  18. I agree with Jdub. If a school like UND can go out and get their games on national TV they should be allowed to do that for football and hockey.its more exposure for the big sky and nchc. Did you happen to hear if men and women's basketball will be on FSN north again? I think that is a huge deal for those programs especially when we have so many twin cities kids on the team. I also think FSN north dips into Iowa.
  19. Good one jdub, I was thinking the same thing. In all honesty though, nice get for NDSU. I think Lund is probably the top prospect in ND this year. With UND having such a good Minot connection I would've loved to see him in green and white. I would expect Cordell Volson from Drake-Annamoose to be the next ND kid to verbal to NDSU. His bro plays there and I think he is down to them and Wyoming.
  20. Haven't been checking this lately so if this has already been posted sorry. I am not at a place where I can link this but Gov. Dalrymple was on 6:30 POV on valley news and said he prefers Roughriders and North Stars. Also the Publisher of the Whapeton Daily News wrote an article about why Roughriders is the best choice. Both are online I just can't link them so if someone else can feel free. Whap paper also had a poll which Roughriders led by quite a bit of votes.
  21. Big time talent. Nice job by the staff being first to offer. NDSU probably won't be far behind. Might be the first time ND basketball has had 3 kids Sem & Meidinger (NDSU) and DeSean (UND) with D1 offers at the same time before any of them play their jr year of basketball. Moody from Dickinson and Carr from Hazen (2017) might be there by their SR year too.
  22. I like Tristan Hartness at WR. Speed can hopefully be increased, but the kid is a gamer. Right now I would say he is probably better than Blackwell from Dickinson but Blackwell has some good speed to work with so he might have more potential. I see Hartness being a guy who could see time at WR in a few years. He's better right now than ND guys like Siebel and Moody (NDSU) were coming out of HS. We'll see how he does once he gets here though. Neither is close to Dulin from Michigan though who looks like a stud on film. I also agree with IRA on Krebs and Darryl Grady. Krebs in particular was probably a top 5 player in state on talent right now, he just probably doesn't project well. My guess is size was the biggest factor. He's a little to slow to play FCS db and would've been a small outside LB for UND. Young man is a flat out FB player though. Also sounded like the ND coaches in the Mon-Dak game were the most impressed with Grady all week. He definitely has the size. He was region player of the year in BBall too. Being we recruited Elijah, just a guess here but maybe we offered a PWO and Mary had a scholarship. Would've loved to have seen both in green and white but you can't sign everyone and Bubba is doing a great job. Nice job by Kotelnicki getting those kids though, both will be nice players at Mary.
  23. I agree with your last sentence that that is their job, but I don't agree that they are doing it well. As multiple posters pointed out one of the most recognizable names in college is the USC trojans and if a high school is mature enough to be called Roughriders I think a D1 college can be. How highly paid consultants can't see that is beyond me. The Roughrider name has more ties to the state than any of the remaining names and we would be the only Roughriders in D1 athletics, but they can't see that either i guess. Must be what you get when you hire east coasters who have probably never stepped on ND soil before. Luckily the committee realized it is one of the top choices and voted it as such. I also agree with someone who said if we let the consultants decide we are going to end up with Sundogs or some type of Hawk. The list of schools that changed from native nicknames to some type of hawks is mind blowing. Glad the highly paid consultant are only paid to give "input." I'll take being a Roughrider over some PC Sundog or Hawk any day.
  24. I checked out the forum poll and when comparing that to the SS one one thing stands out. People really have no interest in green Hawks fighting Hawks Sundogs or Nodaks. North Stars is 3rd in both but even that is way behind. Looks to me like the popular opinion might be down to two names. Only question left would be if they eliminate just ND and what those people then vote on. These polls could mean nothing, but that caught my eye.
