    FCS Playoffs

Curious, are the guidelines in the FCS Playoff manual optional for the selection committee? Nowhere in the official playoff manual is there guideline that should have allowed Weber and Idaho to be split up in the first round. There is a specific formula that dictates where teams will be placed in the bracket - there are some exceptions, but nowhere is there verbiage that should have allowed Idaho and Weber to be split up in the first round. Below are the guidelines in verbatim: BRACKET PAIRINGS All pairings will be made by the NCAA Division I Football Championship Committee. The following principles are applied when pairing teams: 1. The teams awarded the top eight seeds shall receive a bye in the first round and are placed in the appropriate positions in the bracket (Nos. 1, 8, 4 and 5 in the upper half; and Nos. 2, 7, 3 and 6 in the lower half); 2. The remaining 16 teams will play first-round games and will be paired according to geographic proximity and then placed in the bracket according to geographic proximity of the top eight seeds previously placed in the bracket; 3. The NCAA mileage threshold for mandatory team travel via ground is 400 miles (one way); 4. If a conference has four or more teams in the championship, the committee may allow an additional flight in the first or second round in order to avoid a conference having all of its teams on the same side of the bracket; 5. Regular-season non-conference match-ups in the first round of the championship should be avoided, provided it does not create an additional flight(s); 6. Teams from the same conference will not be paired for first-round games (except for teams from the same conference that did not play against each other during the regular season; such teams may play each other in the first round); and 7. Once the first-round pairings have been determined, there will be no adjustments to the bracket (e.g., a seeded team may play a conference opponent that advanced out of the first round)

"If UND actually had highest bid." Goes without saying.

    4. When determining host institutions for playoff games when both teams are unseeded, criteria shall apply as follows: (1) quality of facility, (2) revenue potential plus estimated net receipts, (3) attendance history and potential, (4) team’s performance (i.e., conference place finish, head-to-head results and number of Division I opponents), and (5) studentathlete well-being (e.g., travel and missed class time). Conf place finish: UND 3, Weber 3 Head-to-head results (NAU): UND won by 3, Weber won by 2 Number of Div 1 oppenents: UND 11, Weber 10 (Weber played D2 W Oregon) UND got absolutely hosed even if the NCAA is trying to say performance. UND is tied or beat Weber in all specified performance examples.

I don't see Bill opening this can of worms without justification, because he's in a much worse position if UND was actually outbid, and in that case Weber would also be quick to release their bid to the public.

Chaves on radio now... sounds like he thinks und had highest bid and Weber is hosting potentially based on other criteria.

Should UND not have bid more? Why? The only time UND hosted a playoff game, attendance was 9,837 rather than 7K.

I'm genuinely asking, what point are you trying to make? I feel like you're saying UND shouldn't make a bid that they can't recover the costs on? Is that correct? UND spends millions on the full allotment of scholarships, FCOA, charter flights, etc. WHY?? I think they do it in an effort to make deep playoff runs, right? Please correct me if I'm wrong. If not, spending 50k for a home playoff game seems like a bargain to me. Disregard how much better UND plays at home vs away, 50K is probably worth it for the economic impact, recruiting (ability to point to home playoff games), and just the added hype around town for the program... home playoff games are a huge opportunity to engage casual fans, and improve or build fan support, which can help to drive ticket sales and donations in future years. UND misses on all of that for only what, 10, 20, 50K? Not worth it to bid cheap... we get what we pay for. By being willing to spend 50K and using your numbers, I believe that would bring the bid up to $195,000 (125K + 20K + 50K = 195K)(175K - 195K -30Kalerus = -50K. Still worth it imo. Pennies compared to UND's FB budget. Literally like a tenth of one percent of the overall FB budget. And that assumes the Alerus still charges normal rent, and it doesn't include any other revenue such as concessions.

Kinda found and answer for Alerus rent. It's negotiable for playoff games. The 2019 playoff bid showed a budgeted rental fee of $32,000 (zero discount). Not sure what was "negotiated" for this year. Edit: This (below) is from the UND/Alerus usage agreement for 2020 and 2021, not sure what the language said for 2019, so this may or may not have been a change after UND didn't win the 2019 bid.

That's what I'm thinking. Given that UND has a 4-5 million dollar football budget, you would think they wouldn't be so worried about breaking even for a playoff game. Given that the Canad is also connected to the Alerus center, and that a home game would bring visitors to the city, I'm curious if the Alerus Center and City still require UND to pay rent for hosting playoff games, because the economic impact of a home playoff game would more than make up for waived rental fees at the Alerus, one might think. And it IS a city owned venue.

You can foia pretty much any school. For most states all it takes is an email. Find who to email on their website. here: https://www.weber.edu/legalcounsel/Records.html

I filed a FOIA for UND's bids back in 2019. Below are UND's bids for each round. I didn't publicly post them because I didn't want other schools to see what UND was bidding, but it doesn't seem to matter and the schools probably know anyway. And they can easily file FOIA's themselves. Again, these are from 2019. Pretty sure the "bid" is on the last page, #9, titled "guarantee", which was 75K for the first round in 2019. 14. Robert Morris apparently looked into renovating their arena shortly before they cut the program. https://www.architectmagazine.com/project-gallery/hockey-arena-concept

    Polls

I believe UND bid about 75K so if the article I linked to is correct and Nichols bid about 80K or more, the person who posted about hotel rooms is full of it.
  16. During the intermission of their first Mens Basketball game, Tennessee State just ran a very well produced 5 minute feature about their pursuit of adding a D1 hockey program. They appear to be VERY serious... even mentioned construction of a new arena and quickly showed a rendering. They have not started their official fundraising drive yet, but given the quality of the video and the apparent passion for this project from their AD, I think they could actually get this done.

Has anyone ever reported the dollar amount teams actually bid for these games? Edit: Found some for Nichols and JMU https://www.houmatoday.com/story/sports/college/2018/11/17/nicholls-makes-aggressive-bid-to-host-fcs-playoffs-for-second-straight-year/8347364007/ https://jamesmadison.rivals.com/news/final-tally-dukes-lose-126k-on-playoff-game/printable
  18. I love the 3-4 defense, but if our D is so complicated that it takes a couple years to learn it, it may be time to re evaluate the strategy here. Find a D that can allow us to take advantage of the portal, so we can fill spots when needed. I really like our Offense right now, so I don't think that should change. With the T portal the way it is today, we don't have a large enough roster to have both a confusing offense and defense, because attrition will kill us with less guys staying in the system long enough to learn the system and thrive. A guy like Buckner should be able to have a larger impact, otherwise I fear we will constantly be rebuilding the D.
  19. Following. Planning on my first rink this year as well.
  20. Anyone else annoyed that so many P5 schools don't have a decent message board? There's paid message boards on websites like rivals and 24/7, but the only topics are narrowly focused on fb and bb. Is there an online community anywhere for ASU hockey fans (other than a USCHO thread)? Just baffles me that schools like UND, NDSU, UNI, SDSU, USD, Montana, etc. all have such quality, free, message boards, but bigger schools have crap, and the crap they do have normally isn't even free.
