Because both coaches compete against others who play by the exact same rules as they do. An argument could easily be made that Sather isn't utilizing the portal in a matter that best fits UND's situation - his recruiting strategy sucks. That's on him and not the portal. WIU was way better than UND last year and that's after everyone on the team transferred out - their new coach found D1 transfers. WIU is less desirable than UND in almost every respect.

From a UND perspective, I agree with both of you. At the same time, it could also be kinda fun if it was viewed in the same respect as a spring game in college football. Let the guys who want to sign pro leave. There are a lot of guys that put in a ton of work during the season that don't see the ice much. Let those guys and the younger kids get some more game reps than usual and use it to build for the following season. Let the third string goalie play a period, etc. Fans would also get to see the team once or twice more. Biggest draw back imo is that the first round would be the same weekend as regional but perhaps it could help UND fans cope, lol. Could also help to build fan support at smaller or newer programs (see sdsu basketball and their nit run). Not really much to dislike if ya accept it for what it is imo. I'd prob watch regional games instead, personally.

The hockey team has higher goals, however, and I could see how they wouldn't be interested. Pretty sure some p5 schools don't participate in the basketball NIT, for example, because they feel like they are above it in a way. Could see how the coaches would feel the same way. Thoughts? Would/should UND participate?

I kinda wonder if P5 guys will start accepting more low/mid major offers to gain playing time and experience prior to transferring to a P5 school. Think juniors/USHL for hockey. Even NHL draft picks play juniors while knowing they will probably leave college early, rather playing 4 yrs of college hockey. Would a guy like Klabo develop faster if he played at UND as a freshman vs riding the bench at a P5? Not saying whether or not this is or should his or UND's approach - it just crossed my mind. A p5 could also suggest that to a kid... telling them to play somewhere they will see the floor and then transfer with 1yr experience.

Kind of random, but did UND ever do anything to honor Bill Fitch in his passing? He was at UND for 5 years I believe. I ask because I don't remember seeing anything from UND about it, but I could have missed something. UND has a proud basketball history... curious if/how much basketball alumni are involved in any way with the program now days? History and tradition mean a lot to a lot of people, including former players, donors, and recruits. Could UND do better in this regard to improve the programs footing? Did J.J. Safranski play ball at UND for example?

Umm, not only hockey. Pretty sure the women's basketball team just signed 3 and 4 star recruits who had other options in warmer climates. Football beats out Southern teams all the time. UND volleyball has historically recruited well enough to be a strong team, despite the weather. Actually, come to think of it, it's pretty amazing that UND has the enrollment it does when pretty much anyone can choose to go to a school in a warmer climate.

Relative to the competition, does Deboer have better or worse facilities than Bubba? Despite the football team still not having a legit locker room (old one was going to be condemned) Bubba has put together a top 15 football program and the team is getting better and better. Program is still trending in the right direction whether you feel like admitting it or not. Program support matters just as much as coaching - see Stig for example. Bubba just crushed Petrino this year as well, in Petrino's third season, but coaching...

Weak argument. Blame weather all you want but other programs (at UND) don't have an issue recruiting players who have other offers in better climates, and despite the hockey argument and the basketball team losing nearly every game, UND still has better attendance and fan support than 100 plus other programs in the country. No legit reason for UND to be a bottom 300 team. Yes they need better funding, but with the goal being Summit League Championships. Prior to the transfer portal rule change, other teams played by the same rules as we did and they were also able to keep players around longer, as well. UND isn't the only team to have more guys transfer out after the rule change - biggest difference is that we have a coach that hasn't seemed to adapt... with all the D1 guys in the transfer portal it's pretty crazy to see Sather start the same DII talent year after year.

Wilson? Although anyone that saw his hudl prob didn't think so. His juco coaching staff had to reach out to UND in order for him to get a D1 offer. Nobody in the country was interested in him. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Especially with the transfer portal.
