Viewing options for Sioux hockey games this season
Siouxperfan7 replied to fightingsiouxfan86's topic in Men's Hockey
So I was saw that Midco is picking p the feed for Saturdays game at UNO on Saturday. Which got me thinking. Why can't they pick up every away feed if that is possible? And then it aslo got me thinking why Dan and Kobber can't haul the Midco truck to all UND hockey away games? Mazako and Woog did it all the time for Gopher games back in the day. I hope Midco can sign up a bunch of subscribers in Fargo and grow their revenue stream so they can make this happen. Just a pipe dream I guess, but hey, snythings possible! -
Of course all of us UND fans were dissapointed when the Fighting Sioux name was retired. But we must remember what cost it would have been to the University and the Athletic Department and its teams had we kept the name. Big Sky President Fullerton said that they had concerens with UND having the Fighting Sioux name. Said it would affect our membership into the conference. Also, there is no gaurantee that the NCAA wouldn't come down harder in the future and ban all native american names no matter if you had tribal approval or not! Now sure if we were still the Fighting Sioux today, many people would be happy. But at what cost would it have been to the school and the teams. Imagine playing the the Great West for basketball and football. And who knows where for other sports. It would have been a disaster. So while there was probably more that could have been done in the past in regards to our relationship with the 2 tribes in the state, but the contreversy would have been a black could hanging over the University and its athletic teams. Yes is sucked seing the name go, but I think that if you step back and look at it now that we are a couple years removed, I hope most see that it was the right decision.

Again, the students are not employees of the University. They aren't buying stock in the program so when the school succeeds financially, they do as well. They are given a free education. More than enough compensation considering how much college tuition is these days. I get your point that the student atheletes are the ones playing on the teams that generate this revenue, but that is my point. The team is generating the revenue, not the player. Buckeye Stadium will sellout next year and many years down the road regardless of the players they have playing for them. The school makes money off the team, so they should be obligated to compensate the team for revenue produced. Not individual players.

So what is interesting in this whole debate is where was this argument 10 years ago or the many years before that? Only when Universities started signing these monster TV deals and making boatloads of money from displaying their college athletic teams did students atheletes feel they needed a cut. Where were the complaints years ago from student athelets who were struggling financially to pay for ":other costs" at school? These students are not employees of the University. They don;t have stock in the University. They are now owed anymore money simply because the University is brining in more money due to athletics.

I agree being a student athelete is a 365 day comitment. But it is not a 24/7 365 all the time. Atheletes don't work out all day every day. I am no strength conditioning expert by any means, but I am pretty sure that is not good for your body. My point is that these kids have plenty of time to earn extra money if they want as opposed to be given money just because they feel like they earn it. Welcome to life as a college student. You don;t have a lot of money. But when you are out of college than hopefully you will. No reason that schools need to paying these guys extra money so they can get their Beats by Dre headphones because they don't want to get a job to be able to buy it themselves.

2 a days all summer long? Who does that. Sure there is off season workouts, film studies, etc. But you are telling me that they don't have time to have a summer job? Please.
-
What about the kid who is working 2 jobs while trying to pay for his school, books, room and board, etc and down the hall the starting running back for the football team doen't have to pay for any of those because it is covered under scholorship. I get it that football demands are high and these kids don't have time for a part time job as well as going to class. But they are getting their education paid. And its not like the season lasts all year. Can't these kids get jobs in the summer like every other college kid does? So their scholorships might not cover books other stuff. Get a job in the summer to cover the couple hundred bucks you need to have for that.

Another question someone can answer, How do these stipends compare to what players in Canada Major Juniors make? Could this lead to more players playing collee hockey as apposed to the Major Junior route?

Big Sky reviewing bids for M/W tournaments for 2016-18
Siouxperfan7 replied to SiouxVolley's topic in Men's Basketball
Sure Faison could have put a bid in for Grand Forks, but there would be a very slim chance that they would be awarded it given the fact how far Grand Forks is for every other member school. It would be like having the Big 10 basketball tournament in Pittsburgh. Right now the Big Sky has great attendance due to the #1 seed hosting. Very good chance that the host school will now play 3 games. Could you imagine the attendance if they had it at the Alerus and UND lost in the first round or didn't even make it? The Big Sky is not going to have this happen. I also agree that having the First round NCHC games typically at home that same weekend will deffinitely prevent a lot of people from going to games. IMO, Reno probable has the strongest case given it is not at a host school and deffinitely a destination location for fans. -
If only their were a team that is tradionally high in the PWR rankings that MN could have scheduled that would have given them a better shot to improve on their PWR. Heck maybe their was even a team that wasn't to far away that actually wanted to schedule the Gophers!!

Thundercats!!

Not an excuse. Just reality. Onsidering the size of the city the University is in and the number of alumni, UM has more fans. Now will they always get more fan support for a neutral site game than UND, not always, but it is not unrealistic to expect it.
-
This just in....There are more Gopher fans than UND fans in the world. Also just breaking.....There are more direct flights from MSP to PHL than GFK to PHL. So I guess it would make sense for there to be more fans of the bigger school with more alumni from a larger city. Congrats!

Hart Center West!!
-
That would be one heck of a Regional!! However, I would love to see the Gophers miss out on the NCAA's!!
-
How bad is the Big 10 this year!! There will only be 1 team in the tournament most likely!! The WCHA right now would have 3! Who would have predicted that!!

He talks about respect. But he only refers to respect as giving them money. How did Florida State earn the Seminole Tribes respect? By paying them money. they certainly don't respect them by dressing up a white student and having him throw spears in the ground all while dressed up in native american clothing and then leading the crowd in a tomohawk chant. At UND, sure there were examples in the past and even today about innapropriate behavior regarding the Sioux name. But those behaviours are strongly discouraged by UND administration. UND has for years shown respect to native american people and their culture, specifically the Sioux tribe. Did UND pay them a percentage of merchandise sales, not that I am aware of. But respecting someone means more than just paying them with money. He goes on to say "Did UND offer the Sioux people anything other than "respect," such as financial or educational stipends or stipulations? I am not aware of any." Not sure if this guy is aware that UND offers the most native american programs than any other University in the country. He must not have heard of the INMED ir INLAW programs?! Respect is something that should be earned, not bought.

It is an opinion, but can dispute anything he said?

Tom Dennis puts hit the nail squarly on the head with this opinion article. Couldn't agree with more with what he said. http://www.grandforksherald.com/opinion/our-opinion/3658663-our-opinion-nickname-key-whats-best-und

I would think that the Sioux Shop would be able to get around a possibble violation by always saying "If a UND player scores a hat trick, all hats are 33% off" as opposed to "Since (player) scored a hat trick, hats are 33% off." Which they did. That's so dumb. It's not like O'Donnell would get a percentage of the sales on hat that night!! Not surprising I guess!!
-
So who starts at QB if Braxton Miller transfers to UND?!!!
-
Yes. I agree. Not sure why you have to come over to a UND fan site to tell us that. We all know this. Do we wish UND would get that type of exposure, yes. We get it. Congrats. What more do you want from us?!!

I get what you are doing. You are coming on here bragging about how many people watched the Bison play. Implying but not actually saying it was because NDSU football is such a bil deal, millions tune in to watch them. And at the same time riping college hockey because you have no vested interest in it. I think its awesome that 1..2 million people watched an FCS playoff game. Shows that FCS football is popular and I am glad my team plays at that level. So why your insults and arrogance were suttle, they are still there to pick up on. And hey, thanks for coming over here to let every know!!
