  1. This is precisely the reason a new name must be slected. If you don't think the NCAA would do such a thing than you are kidding yourselves. Imagine UND football making the playoffs in football and bidding on a home game and the NCAA coming in and saying that they can't host because they have not lived up to the settlement agreement. What if the college hockey playoffs go to host schools again and UND is not allowed to host and has to go on the road as a #1 seed. SOme people will say, "oh that will never happen". Really? And we never thought the NCAA would come in and force schools to drop their nicknames. It's the NCAA, anything can happen!!
  2. Unfortunately having just "North Dakota" will not be on any ballot that you get to vote for. You see, the ballot will be to select a new nickname, not to not have one. The University is not going to go with no nickname. Opens the door for too many issues down the road. I am a supporter of the Fighting Sioux name and was sad to see it go. But I let it go. Moving on without a name is not letting it go.
  3. Does UND have to have a nickname, that is a grey area and can be debated. Does UND want to not have a nickname, There is no debate. The answer is no. UND is going to choose a new nickname. Yeah it sucks. Yeah its not going to be as good as Fighting Sioux. But that is reality.
  4. More like in touch with reality. The sooner you realize that, the better.
  5. The NCAA was OK with the "cooling off period" because UND did what they requested, drop the native American name. I don't think the NCAA really thinks that UND will be known just as "North Dakota". How dumb would it be to not have a nickname? No other college/university in the country does that. YOu can call it unique, but I call it stupid.
  6. Hayduke and maybe a handful of others have refered to FCS as JV. So by saying "you guys" you are referring to a very very very small percentage of people on here. Alos, We don't have "Bison envy" Do we wqnt to win conference titles, make the pplayoffs, and win a National Championship? Sure. Just like every other school in the FCS. Not "Bison envy" just wanting to win.
  7. Couldn't agree more! Same can be said for the state legislatures in Bismarck coming up with a bill to delay the nickname selection process. Those who want to delay the process or just stick with "North Dakota" only are those that just can't get over the fact the name is not coming back and it never will. I guess the "Nickname at all costs" crowd is now the "No nickname, we don't need one, if we don't have one we can be unofficially be known asthe Fighting Sioux" crowd!!
  8. I threw out a question on this thread....How many NCAA schools currently have no nickname? It your answer is 1, than you are correct. Now why do schools need nicknames for their athletic teams? If it is not important, why don't you see schools dropping their nuckname and just go as "Michigan" or "Notre Dame."? Sure those schools have name recognition and branding on just the name of the school itself, but the chose to pick a nickname and still have it today? Now why is that? Answer that question and you will realize why a nickname is important to a University/College.
  9. People always seem to forget that little nugget about these two legendary coaches! Red hasn't won a title in 17 years and has missed the tournament the last 2! I wonder how many posts are on the "Fire Red" thread on the Michigan fan site?!
  10. I am fine for taking the appropriate time to select a name. But don't pass legislation that handcuffs the entire process until a date in 2017.
  11. How many schools don't have a nickname? Let me give you a hint......1. How many schools have had a name but it was deemed negative or "hostile and abusive.".......several. And how many of those teams forced to change their name currently have no nickname, just the name of the school. I'll give you another hint.....1. Now you think that schools like Marquette, Miami OH, and all the others on the 2005 "hostile and abusive list" who had to change their names thought about just keeping their school name and having no logo? Most likely. How many of them chose to have no nickname......(hint, hint, hitn) ZERO. Now do you think there might be a reason for this? I am thinking that they probably did some research and realized the lost revenue, no identity, and other issues was not worth it. So they selected a new name. Now UND can choose to be unique and decide on a name. But looking at what others, who have probably researched the affects of not having a name, UND should probably learn from them and not go down a road that will not be good for the University.
  12. http://www.grandforksherald.com/news/local/3653872-population-availability-present-struggles-booking-concerts-grand-forks "the Alerus Center gains most of its revenue from conferences, but booking a lot of conferences can leave fewer dates available for concerts, Swanson said. And during UND football season, that is the venue's top priority, which also reduces its availability for concerts." Could have fooled me!!!
  13. What do you guys not understand?!! Having no nickname is NOT an option. It says so in the signed settlement agreement UND officials signed!! So you can forget about any ideas of just being "North Dakota." Not gonna happen!!! The sooner you realize this the better. It sucks, but deal with it. Welcome to reality!!
  14. That's one of the first things I said after seeing the new video boards in action. I get it you want to advertise and promote events....but do we really need to see the entire game that we play Stoneybrook in 2 weeks for the entire game? Having rushing yards, passing yards, and total yards and a few other individual stats like QB stats would be so much better.
  15. Be the Fighting Norse and use the Fighting Irish guy logo with his fists in the air and slighly modify it. Already have a similar interlocking ND logo, might as well fgo all in!!
  16. I was cheering for Ohio State to win because I want the powers that be to realize thatit's not always the top 2 teams in the country that are capable of winning a National Championship. Ohio Stae was the #4 seed and according to many people they should not have even been in the final 4 in the playoffs. They scored 34 points and 42 points respectively against the top 2 teams in the country. That is impressive. Further proof that expanding to a college football playoff with 4 teams was the right thing to so and giving more steam to expanding it it even more. In the playoffs anything can happen. That's why they play the games. So when it comes to FBS college playoff footbal games, why not play more?!!
  17. Did Union visit the White House last year??
  18. I hear ya. I'm relaxed. No suprose that the "dull atmosphere" coincided with the team having seasons with losing records and being blown out. Back in the early 2000's when we were winning, the place was loud and buzzing!! It's been siad a hundred times and will be sent 100 times more....win and the problem will solve itself.
  19. Not sure how you are going to get natural light in there without having it costing a ton!! The Alerus Center is toeing the line with being in the red every year. What makes you think they would spend money on renovations that only benifit the UND football team! They wouldn't even put an interlocking ND logo on the turf!!
  20. http://www.uscho.com/rankings/pairwise-rankings/d-i-men/ If the season ended today Mankato, Bowling Green, and Michigan Tech would most likely be in the NCAA tournament. As much as the leftover schools were ticked off at the Big 10 and the NCHC forming, it is deffinitely giving some of the schools that haven't had a sniff at the NCAA tournament a chance to make it.
  21. UND spent, what, 3 million dollars on the new locker room and team area renovations at the Ralph. Apparently that was mostly private donations, but it would sure be nice if they spread some money over to the football program and others!!
  22. This is probably my biggest gripe about the Alerus Center on game days. There is a big sign outside on the Alerus that says "Home of UND football" but you would hardly notice it when walking in the doors!! If the Alerus want to truly be the home of UND football, they need to step it up. UND football is their #1 tenant. Get murals on the walls. Get the more green and white in the concourses. banners hanging on the walls. All these things would enhance the experience and make going to UND football games an event.
  23. The Nakota horse is obviously a horse. But Nakota actually represents a native american tribe. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nakota Could you just see the NCAA making a stink about this if we selected Nakota as our name?!!!
  24. OK, I am a little skeptical about this rumor. Can 1 program in an athletic department refuse an apparel contract? And would the basketball team really know if Nike makes more confortable shorts than Adidas? I am calling BS on this. Not sure who your sources are, but I don't think that Jones can tell the athletic department what contracts they will or won;t honor.
