Jacksonville St. averaged 41 PPG during the regular season and is currently averaging 54 PPG in the playoffs. I realize that the Bison have a history of shutting down high powered offenses, but, this may be there biggest test in the last 5 years. The will need Wentz and his arm to keep up with this high powered offense. Stick is good, But Wentz may be the best QB to play for NDSU. If he is healty, you have to start him.

You are dreaming if you think that is going to happen. I doubt we will see a goofy looking hawk mascot walking around. At least not for a little while. Would be more in favor of a live hawk that would circle the field/court/ice before each game. Not a new concept, but definitely better than a green big bird like mascot running around!!

So do stakeholders get to vote on the top 5?
-
Seems to me the majority of NCAA logos (or any other logo) that has a bird as their nickname has usually the head of the bird or the entire bird as the logo. UND really needs to differentiate itself from all the other bird logos. (Of course not picking a bird nickname would have solved that, but that's a whole other argument). I like the idea of using just the wings. For all the people that say that the NCAA won't let us have feathers in our logo, that ridiculous. The NCAA is not going to tell us our bird logo can't have feathers. We can all agree that this logo needs to basically be a slam dunk in order to salvage the generic name. Making it different from all the other bird logos should be taken into consideration.

How bout a hawk with flames coming out of its mouth!!!!

I like these ideas a lot. I am all for the first come first serve tailgate spots. Can't stand the people that pull up to their tailgate spot 20 mins before kickoff. Having 20 spots between tailgaters not only looks dumb but takes away form the tailgate experience interacting with other fans!! The screeching hawk call is something that should not only be considered using at the tailgate lot to alert fans if he team arriving, but something hat should be used in the in game production of many sports as well. Alex Kroke is the main contact for tailgating issues for UND I have dealt with him several times he is a good guy. If you have and ideas, he would be more than happy to hear them. alexander.kroke@athletic.und.edu

Oh gee, I don't know. Maybe because you want to support the school you cheer for and the CURRENT name!!
-
The problem with your first option is there was never going to be a name that a large majority of people supported. Sure, Fighting Hawks won a majority vote, but that doesn't mean that it was a fan favorite. There was never going to be a name that had the popularity to be the obvious choice as a replacement. If there was, that would be the new nickname. The university spent hundreds of thousands of dollars with this process. I doubt they are going to do it again. There would have to be pitch fork and torches type movement before UND officials consider changing it again.

2-1 Final, Commie bastards!!

Obviously 67% of people that voted to retire the name didn't want the name retired. There was no other option to keep the name. Scheduling issues, conference affiliation, ability ot host post season games, etc forced our hand. My point is that those that voted to retire name all believed it is what was best for UND and its athletic department. What did you think was going to happen when the name was retired? That UND would just be North Dakota and not have a new name? Did you think that any name picked would be as popular and well received as Fighting Sioux? Of course not. A new name that is not Fighting Sioux was going to be selected. You can't vote to retire the Sioux name because you think its best for the University one minute, and the next minute not accept a new name and refuse to accept it and revert back to the old name. Not how it works. We as UND fans need to recognize that the Fighting Hawks name is not going anywhere. It is going to be the identity of the University and it's athletic teams for years to come. Not aknowledging it and refusing to recognize it does not help the University. Do you think it does? I get it. Fighting Hawks is not ideal. But is is the hand we are dealt and we have to live with it. We have to choices now. Either we embrace the change and the new name, make it ours and own it, or we fight it and refuse to embrace it which will result in a divided fanbase of those clinging to the old name and those trying to adjust to the new one. And just a side not, you want to credit my credibility, so be it. But that is your opinion. I know where I stand as a person and as a life long UND supporter.
-
You do realize how stupid our fanbase is going to look when half the fans are cheering "Let's go Sioux" in their Sioux gear and the other half is cheering "Let's go Hawks/Fighting Hawks" wearing their Fighting Hawks gear right?!! There is a large majority of people that wanted UND to retire the name. 67% of people that voted on the measure said that. Those that could read the writing on the wall realized that it was the best interest of the University to retire the Fighting Sioux nickname and adopt a new one. Just because now that we have a new nickname with a logo soon to follow that wasn't as good as you hoped for, that doesn't change the fact that adopting a new nickname and logo were what was best for the University moving forward.

Never said you had to burn all your Sioux clothing. You can wear Sioux clothing. That's fine. I still own some. My point is those that absolutely refuse to refer to UND as the Fighting Hawks and won't ever by Fighting Hawks merchandise are in denial, and yes stubborn. Just because you wear Sioux clothing doesn't mean you are not accepting of the new name. But 5 years from now, if you are still wearing your Sioux jersey to a hockey game yelling "Go Sioux", you are being stubborn.
-
"Proud Fighting Sioux Fans". The reason you are proud fans, is because the name of the school you support was the Fighting Sioux. If UND would have been known as the Fighting Hawks for 80 years, you would be "Proud Fighting Hawk" fans. My point is, the support you gave the Fighting Sioux name was because it was the name of the University of North Dakota athletic teams. I get it that Fighting Hawks is not even close to being as good as Fighting Sioux on many levels. But is is the nickname of the school in which you support. If you think not embracing a new name and logo and refusing to accept the new name and logo is supporting the University, its teams, and its student athletes, that's your opinion.
-
By "most people" who are you referring to? With the exception of hockey games, the majority of people are not wearing Sioux gear. Sure there are some, but the majority are not. When a new logo is out and new merchandise is for sale, you will see the majority of fans wearing the new gear. Now the majority of people at hockey games may still wear Sioux gear, but that will change slowly over time. So while others are accepting the fact UND has a new nickname and logo, those that are stubborn will continue to wear the Sioux gear to games and not embrace the change and look foolish.
-
While it may be the cool thing to do to rebel against the man and wear Sioux gear to games and around town after the new merchandise with the new logo is out...You are going to look rather foolish when the students, student athletes, and a whole bunch of other fans are wearing the new name and logo while you are still clinging to the past.
-
I suppose now we have to determine the voting intention of the Fighting Hawk voters. Were they voting for a bird or something else? May need to have another runoff before a logo is picked!!
-
"The Bison have to meet Title IX obligations, raise their fundraising substantially and fund an entire athletic budget that currently operates at around $20 million annually" Reasons why it will never happen.
-
This is such a stupid argument. He has a prior commitment. Big deal!! Who cares!!! Man, hockey can't start up soon enough!! Getting rediculous around here!!!
-
Who bought Mike Ivall's "Fighting" Hawk Logo?
Siouxperfan7 replied to Descartes's topic in UND Nickname
So...basically every Bison fan including the players then?!! -
If you agree to a home and home to Weber St., you should have no problem agreeing to a home and home against UND. Just sayin.
-
Sorry, but the football helmets have had the interlocking ND on the helmets for decades. I don't see that changing with a new name. There was never a Sioux logo on them. I don't see there ever being a Hawks logo either.
