BCS 4-Team Playoff coming in 2014
jodcon replied to fightingsioux4life's topic in Non-collegiate sports
About frickin time, 8 would be a better number but I'm not complaining, at least the #3 and 4 teams will get a chance. -
Maybe they should move their operation to Panama City. Then people could send them correspondence to: NCAA 1 Hypocrisy Lane PC Earth Yeah that sounds right.
-
That's better.

You know the rules here... Every thread has to turn into a thread relating to: A) The nickname/mascot B) NDSU C) The Gophers I think it's in the agreement when you sign up.
-
I don't know, drawing a line in the sand versus everything that has happened and is still happening and probably has yet to happen...if it was me I would rather fight it up front especially since they have the hammer...but who are we to question their tactics?
-
In hindsight I bet they wish they could go back to 2005 and fight this battle at its core and just set a date for EVERYONE to give up their nicknames, like say December 31, 2006. If they would have done that rather than playing "Let's Make a Deal Which We're Going to Break Eventually Anyway", everybody would have been treated equally, everybody would have their nickname retired and replaced, and they would have saved themselves and the schools all the money and grievances these 'deals' have caused.
-
...then they check their bank account balances and a warm smug feeling comes over them, and all is well.
-
Sad to think that the subpar effort that was presented in the SL lawsuit may now be used as precedent against other schools/tribes in their efforts to retain their names, so in an ironic twist the SL lawsuit ends up a win for the NCAA on two fronts.
-
Can you imagine the squealing if Florida State would go under attack from the NCAA? Nationally few care about a nickname issue in some town called Grand Forks, North Dakota, but if FSU had to fight the same battle they would come out of the woodwork in every podunk town from coast to coast. That would be interesting.

Huh, looks like Tallahassee has a Rob Port too. While it looks like this is nothing more than a marketing strategy to help with their $2.4 million athletic deficit (apparently they must really like to spend because Florida State has to be one of the biggest merchandise movers in college sports), it does bring a couple questions to mind...How long was the agreement with the Seminole tribe for and if there was no definite timetable what would stop them from pulling it at any given time? With the hoopla and national attention that the UND situation has drawn over the nickname issue I wouldn't be a bit surprised if FSU started hearing rumblings from the Seminole community someday.

Especially a Wolves game.

Not defending this particular school because the room looks more like a sweat-box than a timeout room, but there are probably a lot of schools that have rooms like this to deal with children who get out of control to the point where they can't simply put them in the hall. I know our K-3 and 4-6 schools both have them, and I'm sure the older kids schools have something too because at that age it can become dangerous. Usually the kids who end up in the room are there for either physically abusing other kids and waiting for their parents to get them or because they didn't take their meds that day (there are so many kids on meds these days) and they are so ADD that they can't control themselves and disrupt the class to the point they have to wait until their parent either brings their meds or takes them home. Back in the day there were no rooms like this, discipline was handled at school and then your old man whipped your ass when you got home...that cured almost all of it, but now the schools pretty much have to send kids home for even smaller things. Whether the parent will then try to teach the child why what they did was wrong or blame it all on the school, that's another story altogether. Just one note about the video, it would have been a lot easier to look at it objectively if the derogatory comments hadn't been injected, calling someone a fatass doesn't help their cause.

If your wife is along...you're probably going. If she's not, you're probably going for the sports bar.

Is Kurt Zellers UND's worst alumni?!?!
jodcon replied to siouxfan512's topic in Non-collegiate sports
It is ridiculous, we were at Disneyland one time and were going to drive back to Las Vegas where we had to fly out of the next morning, so about 2:00 we decided to leave so we could beat the afternoon traffic out of town...didn't work out that way, still took an hour and a half to get free of the city, at supposedly the "slow" time of the day. I think the term "road rage" was probably coined in LA. Nice name choice by the way Smoggy, the first time we approached LA from the desert side one of my kids looked ahead and said "Is it foggy there?" Not quite. -
Me neither, and hopefully that will be the consensus in June.

Just one of many grey areas surrounding the nickname debacle which will only play out if the nickname does indeed stay. If it changes UND will be in the BSC, every team will schedule UND for all sports, and there will be no worries about recruiting, revenue, scheduling, or anything else on the athletic front. If it stays nobody knows how the dominos will fall, while some feel it is worth the risk to wait and see, most feel the downside could be disastrous and getting removed from the BSC would be as bad a start as anything.

Are you unable to comprehend facts or are you simply too arrogant and stubborn to accept that you don't know everything? It's been stated multiple times in this thread that the new jerseys are lighter, breathe better, and are harder to grab by the defense making the player hard to tackle...those are all functional improvements over the jerseys of even a few years ago, which is the question you posed in the first place. So your question has been answered, yet you discredit the facts and keep insulting everybody who provides these facts because you don't like the way they look. You might not like the look, I don't really care to see a 350 pound lineman in a skin-tight jersey either, but functionally they are better...that is a fact.

I'm not advocating either way on the stadium issue, just responding to the 8 game question. If they are looking at a domed stadium it changes everything as far as potential revenue goes, they could keep it busy all year which would be much more justifiable to the voters, of course it would cost more to build and maintain but the bottom line would erase all those issues. If you're correct about the income tax issue those numbers couldn't be factored into the given numbers, someone like Aaron Rodgers coming to town and getting taxed on 1/16 of his yearly wage for 3 hours of work would add up in a hurry, and even if it is the other way and the tax only applies to just Minnesota guys it would add up to many millions. That number times 30 years should be a major consideration during this process. -

The 8 days is referring to the 8 home games the Vikings have every year, which is one of the biggest reasons a new NFL stadium plan faces opposition. It is quite a bit easier to sell a stadium plan for baseball than it is football simply because of having 81 home revenue dates instead of 8, which brings in approx. 2.5 million fans compared to .5 million. I understand the thinking there, and it makes good business sense. Of course it's not a true indicator across the board...football tickets are higher, merchandise sales are higher, and the crowd is twice as big, so the revenue is probably somewhat closer than the attendance numbers, but baseball is definitely a better deal and an easier stadium sell. As far as the tax revenue numbers go, the last 10 years would be a better indicator because the Wolves have only been around for about 20 years plus the cost of goods sold has increased dramatically in 50 years, so the numbers are a bit skewed using todays figures. According to the numbers they presented it boils down to $9 million/year or 50k/game for the approx. 180 home games the 4 teams play, which would be around $2. per attending fan. That is not realistic in todays dollars. Another thing I wondered is if the amount the players paid in Minnesota state income tax is figured into this equation? I'm sure the pro athletes who live in Minnesota or live there half-year during their season must have to pay state income tax on their salaries don't they? In the case of someone like Mauer that number would be huge, his salary is over $20 million/year so his state tax liability would be what...between 1 and 1.5 million? Or am I off base here? If true those numbers couldn't have been factored in either, or as I've said before should be reworked for the last 10 years. -
That's OK, it's hard to keep track of every post in the running DaveK/82SiouxGuy (and others) debate.

It's not necessarily about loose or tight fit, it's about the evolution of the jersey. The newest jerseys which came out a couple years ago were more of a sculpted fit and weighed 30% less than the jerseys mostly used at that time, which probably already weighed a lot less than the jerseys of say the 70's or 80's. The new material also has much better ventilation, and because it was a tight fit as mentioned before it made it harder for the defense to latch onto. When you're talking about 300 pound guys running around in the heat for 3 hours, less weight and better ventilation is a huge deal. So much like the newer streamlined body suits that swimmers have, it's all about being lighter and faster, and in the case of football keeping cooler. EDIT: I just looked it up, it's called TECHFIT compression football jersey, although there may be more companies marketing similar products by now.

You win the prize, I was wondering which of the 3 regular Bison posters would jump on that first.

True but I don't think the odd number is a big deal to them because you can't play everybody with that many teams anyway. I was thinking more along the lines of: A) Remove UND from the future schedules B) Insert Idaho into the future schedules Easy fix for them. There would be a lot of support for Idaho coming back from the old-school BSC people, there were some good rivalries before they left. I would rather they take back Idaho and keep UND, but you never know what they're thinking at this point.

Not to be a buzzkill, but the BSC booting UND for Idaho if the nickname stays isn't that farfetched anymore.
