  1. He tried a pull up against Weber in the Big Sky semis..that didn't go any better. Looking at the numbers we don't have anybody that can hit a 3 other than Hooker...and I'm assuming he was covered in that situation, but I was listening and wasn't watching. Crandall, had already scored around 2 defenders in close to the basket in the 2nd half so it's not like he isn't capable of pulling it off.
  2. Also, if I'm an opponent defending UND right now, I foul Bernstine, every time he shoots it. Right now he might be lucky to be a 40% FT shooter this season.
  3. It was said after the game on the broadcast...that they shot free throws all summer, and even yesterday they each shot 50 during practice. The individuals who continually miss, it basically is killer instinct and handling pressure. Not sure how you emulate that, but they've all been in these moments enough to figure it out, and it doesn't seem like they can. Not sure what the answer is? Not practicing free throws, maybe that will work. On a positive note...and I have to at least end with something positive. Cortez Seales, played a pretty solid game. That was pleasant to see, as he has been basically absent the first 3 games. That surprised me that he basically came out this season and laid 3 duds, he had to know that the team was going to need him more this year... but if we get today's Cortez as the season moves forward... that will help.
  4. All thes things above sums up the feeling perfectly! Congrats ladies!!!
  5. Do you know what is considered a money game in Women's College Basketball? About 20k. A money game in Men's college basketball like UND going to Wisconsin 90 to 110K. Now lets reverse it what if UND wants to bring into a mid to low major for just a one off game how much would that mid to low major need to consider it? My understanding is 40 to 60K. 40 if you're beatable and closer ro 60 if that isnt a given from what I hear. I gaurantee you that Iowa isn't getting anything like that or requesting that to come play here tomorrow night. Why? Because it's womens basketball and the fiscal dynamics are completely different than that of Men's basketball. Sadly, UND's Athletics budget is such right now that there is no way to pony up to bring in a team...and it would have taken some ponying too, at least this year, because the word is out that we may actually be decent, and nobody is going to come and risk a loss without some definite coin in the pocket. Bottom line, we need coin or to have our school in a different part of the country where there are many D1's like a Weber State- they can arrange a Utah State(Logan), BYU (Provo) Utah(SLC) or Utah Valley(Orem)-all are just down the road. It's an entirely different game for Men's basketball scheduling than it is for women.
  6. I believe the television window that UND is allowed for its football tv broadcasts really squeezes UND as to when they can actually schedule the FB game(if they want to be able to have it on tv) So this may be a little bit of a Big Sky issue and the limitations that the Root Sports contract puts on its schools that have their own tv arrangements. The way I see it is that most of the schools in the Big Sky are ok with Root, but for North Dakota it really only appears to hamper them primarily
  7. I was listening to it on the radio, and Paul said they most likely didn't go to the locker room was because the last time they took the 1st 2 sets in a match was at Idaho State and when they came out of the locker room it was as if it was an entirely different team, and I don't think they wanted last night's result to go the way it did against the Bengals. So this must have been a Jedi mind trick type of move to keep whatever momentum going, by keeping the players out by the court, at the break.
  8. Actually, its quite common that TV and movies utilize college footoge on tv in the background. The media usage rights fee is far less than it is for pro sports.
  9. That is the one thing about this whole process that I can't seem to to get my head around. If I'm Womens Soccer, I would have to ask the question of why "we"(women's soccer) is on the chopping block and women's hockey isn't. They have similar number of participants and I would guess similar scholarship requirements. And I'm guessing that Women's hockey costs significantly more to operate from nearly all stand points. Considering the committee is examining a budgetary shortfall, wouldn't that stand to reason that at least they compare. I look at it at the Nickname committee. Were they not tasked with something that was unique to North Dakota. If that was the case , this was a committee that forwarded a Hawks nickname. How is that unique to North Dakota or even college athletics for that matter anywhere in college athletics? The same can be said said at those examining reduction measures in this instance. If you are truly are serious about reducing costs, the department, IAC, and president would have to take at least a serious look at Women's Hockey. In my observation they aren't taking this process seriously enough if they do not.
  10. Getting late in the game...Did they find an additional team to schedule?
  11. https://www.amazon.com/Sony-Walkman-Digital-Tuning-SRF-M37/dp/B009WUO3RU/ref=sr_1_7?srs=2530478011&ie=UTF8&qid=1474990339&sr=8-7&keywords=sony+radio This one is simple and has worked well for me at The Ralph. I don't think it's 95.9 anymore, I think another station in town had a translator too close to it. I think it's 96.2 or 96.3 now, and I haven't had any issues when I've used it.
  12. Scheduling in women's college basketball is nothing like scheduling in men's college basketball. Simply cannot compare the 2.
  13. They are an affiliate station group on the network. They can carry the game, do additional programming as they choose. Like they do with their Tailgating Show and Rewind Show, but they are also a Fargo station and have listeners from both sides and they probably will try cater to all listeners.(that's just smart business) If you've listened to that station group lately it's like 85% UND coverage and 15% NDSU. Actually, I've been somewhat surprised how"all in" they have been for being just an affiliate station in Fargo, It's a credit to them how they have really upped their coverage of UND since being awarded an affiliate coverage. As a person that listens a lot, I've been pretty impressed and appreciative so far.
  14. As I have mentioned here before. Paul Ralston was on with Tim Hennessy in the morning discussing many of these issues a couple of weeks ago. The SDSU situation dried up because they are in a far different situation than we are. My understanding is that their coaching staff and ours get along pretty well, but at this point and time they only want home games in Brookings, you would think that would have translated to a home and home series, but they aren't looking for road games, not even the following year. I suppose we could keep playing them down there every year...but somehow I think our fans would decry that as well. We need to play at home eventually too so it seems that they are at an impasse. As Jdub pointed out...the Omaha and USD's can entice D1's that are closer to them to either play on the road (save money) or get them at their place, rather than come to Grand Forks. I've already posted an small example of all the other schools at our level that play lower level teams...there always is going to be a few games like that. You can schedule some 2 for 1's- Northern Iowa (more like 3 for 1, from what I understand) but how realistic can you lock yourself into with too many before it really starts to effect future schedules? Look at a Bradley who UND beat on the road last year, they wouldn't go for 2 for 1's and basically said we'll keep scheduling routinely in the future, but it will be Peoria. I think people assume that 2 for 1's are just easy to schedule but that's not always the case either and then there is just the planning of it. Let's say you get 2 schools that are willing to do 2 for 1's, but both can only come to Grand Forks this year, so the next 2 years UND has to be on the road with those 2 schools, plus on the road for it's money games. Where in the next 2 years will there be much room in the schedule for home games? That's what they are dealing with. You have a program that needs to take 2 to 3 money games per year to help itself and the athletic departments bottom line, in addition to a couple of softies (that's reality). Then you try get in some sort of tournament that can get you a number of games in 1 spot. (saves $'s). That leaves a reality of about 3 to 4 games. This year is a home and home with NDSU, and that takes care of 2. They are looking for one more Getting back to Ralston that morning he gave the example that the 2 staffs from UND and SIUE thought they had an agreement a few years ago...but during the middle of the summer before the contract was to be signed...SIUE called and apologized and said, They were going out to California instead because their budget people found it was going to be a cheaper trip to take than taking one out to Grand Forks. If that story is true that he told on the air...and I have no reason to doubt it. It exemplifies the challenges in home scheduling this program is having. Not only is it expensive for other teams to come into Grand Forks, but the UND Men's Team doesn't have the budget to fly out on Delta in Grand Forks. They must go to Fargo for all their flights. Why? The bottom line. I guess I don't look at the scheduling challenges as a coaching thing. Certainly, there could and are things that you can criticize a staff for. After visiting with a few on staff over the years or hearing that discussion on the morning show its quite apparent, at least to me, that not getting more non-conference home games isn't because they are not trying. There seem to be many factors at play, and all seem to have an effect on the ability to bring teams into The Betty.
  15. I want UND to win, simply because. I think we all agree on that. The result of winning would no doubt help with attendance. Irrefutable fact. I just don't know if winning will really help with drawing more teams to The Betty. I'm not entirely sold that scheduling, especially at our level, is tied to that. I think scheduling is an animal that has many variables.
  16. Should have never decided to beat Louisiana Tech and Bowling Green at The Betty during our D1 transition. Word gets around...go to GF and your record may get dinged.
  17. How are we any different than say Montana, playing Great Falls last Dec. 15th (that game counted for the Griz) or Wyoming playing Western State Nov 11 this coming season (this game counts too) and this year Colorado State has on its schedule something called University of Arkansas Fort Smith.- Go Lions!...by the way. But this is just a small sampling and I could go all day of games that count of non D1 opponents that count. It appears you think that we are the only ones that go down this route when really...it's quite common.
  18. They've been trying/asking for years. The SoDak Schools aren't particularly inclined to travel here. The staff knows that would be a great situation and has been trying, but you can't negotiate with anyone who's not willing to discuss. As has been indicated on more than one occasion, they have stressed they have no interest coming to play in GF, but the door is always open for us to go down there. I think for a good scheduling partnership to take place, there has got to be some give and take...like home and homes. But they(SDSU and USD) are not there right now. I'm past harboring ill will towards any school that won't schedule us fairly. Hey, you have to look out for yourself, I understand, but it would be nice if the SoDak schools would be more amenable to a home and home alternating years. And since the fan base wants some home games (count me as one of them) and it is now apparent that we have no money in Athletics to lure even the most modest of D1's here...UND Basketball finds itself with some real challenging scheduling issues. From the schedule above it looks like our staff, who has always gotten along with Coach Nagy, worked that relationship into a tournament appearance in Dayton hosted by Wright State.
  19. Yuck, this is never good. http://www.wtsp.com/news/local/health-code-violations-shut-down-iconic-fergs-sports-bar/295634178
  20. Paul Ralston was filling in for Swyg and the Tim & Swyg morning show last week and he talked about this on the air. From what he had heard is that the Jackrabbits are only loking to play in Brookings and right now UND is really looking to find some nonconference home games.
  21. I'm hoping that UND did enough the last go round. That was painful. Never like to see my school getting run through the media, with stories everyday about cuts, We didn't even really get to bathe in the afterglow of a national championship. Unfortunately, I have a feeling we may be having to read in the paper daily again about additional programs being on the chopping block. And by programs I refer to not only athletics, but the entire University again. I hope not but... gulp
  22. Are we to expect more cutting at UND, with the state legislature addressing a significant additional budget shortfall?
  23. As far as I know there only has been one person behind the counter. According to a long time member-- the reason there is no ball washer on 2, is because it was stolen. Things apparently have tended go missing more often, since those apartments have been built next to the golf course.
  24. You make an excellent point about the casual fan. The reason you want to see improvment in those areas makes sense. Anway, my lack of appreciation for the bells and whistles probably just means I'm getting old. Lol
