I apologize - totally missed the context of your reply to someone else as to why you are opposed to Rough Riders. I am 100% in agreement with you - as soon as I knew RHHIT was in favor of Rough Riders, I was against it.

Soooo...for those thinking Rough Riders is a great name choice... If you are in favor of "Fighting Hawks," you are caving in to PC folks and pro name-changers everywhere. But having David Gipp and Ron His Real Last Name Is Not His Horse Is Thunder amongst your list of supporters for "Rough Riders," is not?

I remember that fiasco - changing the name to "Marquette Gold" to coincide with the move to The Big East for basketball. They sure did strike gold at Marquette - COMEDY GOLD!

Let's just rotate nicknames weekly. Given the number of different football, basketball, and hockey jerseys teams wear these day, this shouldn't be a problem. "TOUCHDOWN ROUGHRIDERS!" "Pssst...we're the Nodaks this week, remember?" "HEEEEEERE'S YOUR UNIVERSITY OF NORTH DAKOTA NO-DA, er, uh, FIGHTING HAWK SCOOOO-RING!" Participation trophies for everyone! We're ALL winners!

I don't agree with you often, fs4l, but after mulling this over a bit, I think you might be onto something here. Kelley has effectively made about 5,000 Nodaks voters happy while at the same time, ensuring that those "eliminated" votes now don't swing over to Rough Riders and pole-vault that choice to victory. Consultants look like geniuses, Kelley doesn't have to worry about those nasty Indian comments from Teddy Roosevelt coming to the surface, win-win for everyone!

I'm no fan of Rough Riders, but if the SEC can successfully market 3 Tigers and 2 Bulldogs, then I'm guessing UND could figure out how to differentiate itself from a CFL team in Saskatchewan, a local high school, and a minor league hockey team in Iowa.
