A series of penalties made that game very difficult. We got a five minute against us early on and had a couple more in close proximinty to that one that set us in a very defensive posture and tired us out. It was the tpye of game that you really needed your goalie to have a big game and that didn't happen. I would love to watch that game again and see how well it was called, I didn't record it as I was there on that cold April Thursday in St Lioui..

How this all unfolds in the end depends ENTIRELY on the MEDIA. ...IT IS ALL ABOUT PUBLIC PERCEPTION... If the media writes articles 'with quotes' that present the Sioux name as a negative then people will accept the change even though they personally are against changing the name. If the media writes articles 'with quotes' that present the Sioux name as a being liked by the majority native americans (the truth) and write articles which consider the fact that something is being forced on us that is not justified in any logical mannor, then people will become active and resist the name change with success (IMO).

Last weekend I sent the author of the article, Chuck Haga, and both the editor of the Herald and the Forum an email expressing my ubjection to the slanted reporting in these articles. I have had no response thus far.. Now that it looks like their source for the extremely negative quote, Jody Luger, has been convicted of basically trying to cover up killing another human I wonder what they have to say about that--->nothing I bet. I'm going to call my friend who is a Spirit Lake Sioux and a UND Law School graduate, who just past the Bar in Colorado as well as Minnesota and North Dakota a few years back, and get a quote from her about her experience as a Sioux Native American at UND. I'm pretty sure she would be a better source than that tool!
-
Double WOW!! So now I read the Grand Forks Herald and I see that they have the same story as the Forum except that they ADDED ANOTHER ANTI-NAME QUOTE. The story is about how the process to certify the petition ( a petition with 1,000 signatures supporting the name) is going to be laborious. Can someone please tell me why both papers decided it was in ANY WAY relevent to add quotes from only anti-name supporters in an article about a PRO-NAME petition?? Why should we not conclude that the papers are ACTIVELY involved in a propaganda campain to manipulate the population of North Dakota into having the misguided perception that getting rid of the name is the right thing to do? Reminder, two out of three Sioux think the name should stay in the only official vote thus far. YET THE PAPER is 0-3 in quotes?? That is the definition of propaganda folks! WAKE UP!!
-
So just in case anyone out there is slow and needs to keep on keeping a tally; Above forum article: two neutral quotes. two anti-name quotes. zero pro-name quotes. So classy when all objective statistical measures that have ever been done, show support for the name between 60 and 90 percent in all groups. And these measures date back to polls that the FORUM inself conducted all the way back before the NCAA stated this current mess. See Forum poll for support of Sioux name back in 2003(??) All the way to the Spririt lake vote; Yet we get a one way quote from some nobody claiming that 70% of voting adults in Spirit Lake have been brainwashed?? WOW nice journalism!

I misunderstood you last post then. my apologies. I do although disagree with you that the article written about the NA's experiences at UND was appropriate. The article suggests to the reader that these peoples experiences are the norm at UND and I'm very confident that they are not. Including an alternative opinion is a critical component in presenting a condition that has two sides. Through specific quotes the article gave the message that any Sioux NAs that supported the name only did so because that individual had not been a UND student.
-
This article presented both sides:
-
What was that name you said I should call myself?
-
I offer you a pragmatic comparison so that you might see the silliness of employing guilt and serving it on the white population of North Dakota and instead of seeing the truth in real racism- ie danger, physical harm, loss of life or property vs "they stared at me", you chose to call me a cry baby. You, my friend are exactly the kind of person that facilitates our culture of victimization. Just curious, when a person stares at you, why are they looking at you? I'm sure its cause your white huh? Well unless they are white too.. I'll tell you another story; This last Christmas Eve day I was at the Independence mall in Kansas City, Missouri. I was sitting down at the food court eating an ice cream as my kids played in the play area. As I was watching them play a Black guy (around 40 yrs old) who is sitting at the table next to me asks me with a vexed tone, "Do I know you?" I said, "huh?". He said, "Well you have been staring at me and I figure you either know me or you have some problem with me." I explained that he was on the line of sight from me to my kids to which he replied, "hmm?" So here is the lesson in that experience if you choose to accept it: Now let's just consider for a second, because we don't know, that this fella is one who feels that many white people around him have prejudice toward him as a black man. Had he been thinking he was getting stared at by a white dude who had a problem with African Americans and said nothing to me about it, he would have carried that with him forever not to mention added it to a collective of other conclusions into his prejudice bank. And further shared these perceptions with other African Americans as they shared theirs with him. The final chapter in that whole ill condition is &^%$#@&^%$#@&*^%$-----THE MEDIA-------*&^$#&^%$#@&^%$#@ Now you have a recipe for a big pile of Sh%#t! But hey, on the other hand we can all go buy a copy of Black Like Me and buy into the whole white people are racists viewpoint. I'm just smart enough to see the reality of white racism in North Dakota as it compares to other demographic racism that exist in plenty across this country. Don't worry to much about the fact that I'm smarter than you. Your fear that it might be true and what that means to you is pointless. Consider this- If I am 'smarter' than you- ie able to see things you can't- it is I that feel the frustration as you and the masses of others like you move through my world allowing conditions such as the loss of a team name for not a good reason, while you see me as a idiot, ie "real genius" who thinks he is more than he is. So you live the content life contently amongst the masses, while for me, well I get as my only choices to argue against the many in a fruitless fight or just throw my hands up and say, "they had it coming" Only problem is I have 20 years of my life invested in the Sioux name that I have come to have a pride in and love. So see, I'm probably in possession of more 'genius' that you but I for no real reason or purpose other than being surrounded by 'lack of intelligence' lose anyway..

Oh and BTW it is poor journalism. Here us why: First of all, let me make this clear. You are absolutly incorrect about the articles recently in the paper. I have read most of the articles that have been written about this in the last 10 years and I would say about 90% of them have painted the picture of the name change proponents as victims trying to be advocated for. About 80% of the articles have had flat-out incorrect information in them that slants the story against the pro-name side. I remember Nightline once had in its Sign of the Times segement a story about how some billionare Nazi sympathizer could bully the state of North Dakota into keeping a name that was "hostive and abusive" to Native Americans. That is just one example of the plethora of propaganda that has been spewed locally and nationally regarding this issue. Remeber SI back in 2002? Now the articles in the last month have shown both sides of the story more than in the past. But they have not been as you suggested one sided at all. Go back and read them. There was the letter to the editor by the ex Native American Sioux hockey player that got published. But that was one persons perspective and it was not suggesting that it was the opinion or experience of a "GROUP" The article in question speaks to the experience of a group though the testimony of only a few members of that group. Given the fact that 2 out of 3 Spirit lake members DO NOT see it the way that the subjects in the article did, I would say that calling that article irresponsable is quite fair.

WOW!! Whatever dude.. Ttry living somewhere else, in Denver hispanic gangs are targeting white people for assault/robberies to the degree that the D.P.D. advised white people not go out after dark alone in the city. Try walk'n around the South Side of Chicago and see how the people there compare to mean North Dakotan's. I once walked down Prospect Blv. in Kansas City just to prove to a buddie that I would live through it. Not five minutes after he let me out of the car, the police drove up to me and said, "WTF are you doing here whitey? You need to leave before you get hurt! That same blond haired-blue eyed friend, back in college at UND, got jumped by three Native American's in the Down Under for no reason. You could probably say he is racist and said something bad like you are suggesting North Dakotans do in your post, but you might want to know that he is married to Skip Longie's great niece and she grew up on the Spirt Lake Reservation. Oh she, my best friends wife, a Native American, got a law degree from UND and is a huge Sioux Fan. She quilted me the most amazing Sioux Blanket you have ever seen. The people from North Dakota are good people and should not for one second be stereo-typed or judged in the way you are suggesting. There are bad people everywhere it's just a matter of percentage and severity and the folkes in North Dakota are not high on any such list. And if you want to Psychologically understand the perspectives the people in the story have, the first thing that needs to be discussed is Shame Based perceptions and how they relate to feelings of victimization. But given how you apparently see things, that would be way over your head.
-
A hhhh?? wasn't that done already? and it looks like this did a piss poor job of it, given all of the objections to the name they picked..
-
Excellent analogy!!

I will not be OK with it at all if Standing Rock does not have a vote. One overwhelming yes vote by SL and one obstention by SR, when added to the fact that the Sioux name and logo are not objectively either hostile or abusive equals an abomination if it were to be taken away from all who have invested a big part of their life in their association with it. There is no good sense or logic in "beeing OK" with something like that. All of these technicalities of this retarded process have muddied the rediculousness of this whole thing in the first place. This is how moronic practicess become inherent in the status quo. Humans are so easily manipulated.. Here is a perspective to ponder a bit; One could say that all of the people targeted to be honored by the use of the Sioux nickname are dead. So, Who the hell is anyone to say, yeah or neah to UND's use of the name. That is just one of the many angles from which you could attack the reasonability, or lack there of, of this whole thing.
-
Maybe we could send an email to the ACLU and see if they could help advocate for the majority of Sioux to be heard and address the fact that this entire debacle is based on a discriminatory NCAA mandate.
-
Also if you post a link to this on your facebook or myspace webpage you can get some friends to do it also!

Good thing you don't make many
-
you did not mention the protest option. There could very well be a time in the near future where that will be our best move.

I hope Fighting Sioux fans don't give up

This statement suggests you have much to learn. As you consider that which has curtailed our "freedom" don't make the mistake of considering only "freedom" lost through an iron hand of law or a rule to supress freedom of speech by force. If you look at it in that way you will miss what we have before us today. Our loss of feedom has come via a mechanism understood more as an inibility to defend ourselves from propaganda than any law or direct supression of speech. A propaganda that seeks to destroy any real challenge to irrational dogmas which mold our collective definition of reality. It is the media monopoly machine that does this one. Know your enemy.. American media. It has neutered us all. As I have said before and I will say again and again in the hopes that it might wake up people; The media has a way of making us think there is nothing left for us to do when in fact we have done nothing. Oh and don't confuse my points as political. It sounds like you support Obama( I assume), so I will offer you this; The Bush and Reagan Admins had as much to do with taking away our "freedoms"as any politically correct "liberal" rhetoric has since then. With their absolute support, big banks and media corps sought and acomplished the removal (de-regulation) of laws that significantly limited their actions on the axis of greed and control. The "liberal media" as many posters on here talk about being to blame for the Sioux name change, is corporate "big" business! That is the problem in our country! It keeps us at odds with each other by playing this blame game using political ideologies as the focus of all blame. Quite a diversion huh? All with the simple goal of having us all do what we are doing here on this board, talking about which "political ideology" is to blame for our dire situation. It is neither my friends, It is the media. That is what is Screwing you and me both. The media decided that the Sioux name should be exterminated. The same media that screwed the Sioux Centuries ago as well as today! GO SIOUX! -
I fear that although the love for the Sioux is well grasped by fans they are in denial about how much of a unique and awesome reality having Sioux hockey in Grand Forks is. I personally don't know how I would have made it through the winters there without having those awesome Friday and Sat night games to look forward to. Now, living outside of North Dakota in Minnesota, Missouri and Colorado, I have much much more appreciation for how special and unique the Sioux reality is. Sioux fans from students to Senior Citizens need to realize what they have in the Sioux and get MOTIVATED to do something because, let's face it, 400 people is not going to make the required noise. I and a few others have posted on here that we need to do to be succesfull and I have seen very few replies from other posters regarding making plans for a protest. If we want to "fight the good fight" then we need to get involved and get some things done! I go back to my previous statement, "The media has a way of making us feel like there is nothing left to do when in fact we have done NOTHING!" Think about how good it would feel if you PERSONALLY did something to try to stop this crime against reasonability, civility and humanity?
-
Are local radio stations mentioning this event to their listeners? If not call them and tell them they need to do that.
-
Thanks for that. Question for everyone, Why is that not on SS.com anywhere?? Any event that only uses one medium is not going to have adequate turnout! ie, facebook is not going to do it. People need to get serious if you all want to effect change. The media will give you the feeling that there is nothing left to do when in fact, you have done NOTHING! Who is going to this thing tomorrow and how many people are you going to tell about it??
-
Good work! I am wondering about protest though, not so much tributes and such.. What is going on with the march tomorrow?? Is there one planned? Where? When>??
-
I have read in two different articles that there is going to be a march tomorrow (Friday the 16th of April). Both of these artices were from Media sources outside of North Dakota? Does anyone know if it is true that there is a march Scheduled for tomorrow? The bigger question is if there is an event scheduled then why is it not posted on SiouxSports.com? It seems to me that now is the time for people to go be a part of the process and have an influence on matters. If 100 people show up for a march or protest then that has an opposite than the desired effect I would think. If thousands show up then that might build some momentum. So then how do we get thousands? Well, first you need Social media sites like SiouxSports.com to support us through visibility regarding any planned event. ie, report on the what, where, when. This is critical Then we need people to paricipate and choose to make a difference personally, We all need to talk to everyone we know who might be willing to take some time to go to a march or protest. Make sure they know about it. Make sure they are going to go to it. Ask them to tell others. There is more that would help as well. For example: If someone in Grand Forks could rent a message sign that could be placed on a main road like Washingtom or DeMers or University Ave. They could use it to informe people of such events. Then you would get MANY more people informed and involved. Someone could do this in other cities like Fargo as well. Maybe we should make a web site dedicated to Sioux name puplic events.. All I know is I don't want the feeling that I did nothing, Do you? 12,000 people go to ONE hockey game in Grand Forks so there is no reason that thousands should not show up for a march or protest as long is it is well planned! Don't think for one minute that it is a coincidence that the SBofE acted at this time of year. It was deliberate because no one is focused on Sioux sports in April are they? Don't be manipulated! Do what they don't think you will! Stand-up and be heard!

Not to be disagreable because if a protest is to be successful we need solidarity, , but I think staging a protest at the Ralph would be a poor choice for the following reasons: 1. I think a good protest is one that happens at the doorsteps of the people who have the power(responsability) to make the change. Think about if Marten Luther King chose to march in Harlem instead of Washington? 2. Everyone is acustomed to seeing thousands of Sioux Fans at the arena. It would have a pep-rally feel to it wouldn't it? 3. I cannot think of a succesfull protest that was done in or at an Arena or Stadium. Aren't all protest that have the most ?Shock? value done in the streets?? So I say go to where the board is and make them hear us CLEARLY. Make them walk through us to get into their meeting and make sure we are many enough that when the cameras are on they Scream for the media to give this national coverage. I say we need at least 20 thousand people in the streets to really make something happen. I know that there are enough passionate Sioux Fans to make this happen. Bismark is a drive, but I say it is worth it. We could do it at Kelley's house for a more local venue. I say he sold out, but even if he didn't he can call the board and say, "hey I've got 20,000 resolved citizens in the street outside my house, maybe I shouldn't be so happy about this decision after all" I say protest both places I want to hear some more SiouxSports.com memebers chime in on this! Goon? AZ? DAHL?? Berger? Redwing?? Rube? GFHOCKEY? lets gosioux, northdakotahockey, (MPLSBISON are you in)
