SIOUX Recruits - 2008-09 Updates, Monitoring Their Junior League Play
yababy8 replied to AZSIOUX's topic in Men's Hockey
Given the log jam at forward that the Sioux will have the next two years I would bet he is a bit conscerned about the possiblity he might end up on the short end of the ice time stick. Would his stock professionally be better now (after the USHL year he had) or after two years of role playing at UND? Having said that, I think he should pick UND cause I'm sure the hot chick supply is a much better grade than your standard bar fly in the minor league. -
When does the contract for FSSN usually get completed? Any ideas when we will know? Should we all call WDAZ and tell them to sign up again.. and get set up with some HD for us too!
-
I sit corrected I confused his past with the other State Mr. Hockey big lankey defensemen for the Sioux, who did come from HS, just in another State a couple years earlier.
-
I agree with AZ. Lapoint totally changed his game through the year. Last year (07-08) he looked down right feable at times. His skating was odd and suspect. He wasnt using his body well. Later in this season he started to catch my eye with his good play much much more. I think he just needed to grow into his frame. Now that he has his 'red badge of courage' he will come back next year a man I recon btw he came streight from HS.

is this game on the internet??

Trupp was playing an impressive brand of hockey until he re-injured his shoulder in Alaska. Before he got hurt in that series, he was making play after play. I remember thinking he was not getting good bounces and that with the plays he was making he should have had 3 or four points in the Friday game. Then he got hurt. I think he has problems with shoulder dislocations?? If he stays healthy he could be something very special I think... The biggest mystery to me is Toews?? Regardless of his family ties, This kid scored bucket loads of points at Shattucks. I did not get the feeling that his lack of play was an injury thing. But i have no idea about that... Frattin, Malone and VV would be a line that I would like to see some more. I think Zajac will have an excellent senior year. But the big challenge is going to be getting guys like he, Gregoire and Hextall on lines that work well together. I thought the 08-09 team was a diffucult one to figure line combos and I see the same challenge for Hak next year. on D: I see blood having a break out year. And Genoway COULD have a spectacular year. He is so dynamic. His only problem is that pure defensive maturity.
-
I agree with this. I hope VV stays. I think it would be best for him. He has just started to get his play to a dominant level the last few months. Only recently has he begun to figure out how to use his body to work through checks and make plays with people on him. I think another year at this level and he has a very good chance of putting himself into an elite level of player. He will gain all of the confidence that goes with that. If he goes to the AHL I think that would be a hinderence to what the college game will offer him next year. Malone and Fratten also both started to play very well as this season went on. I think if the three of them played together next year they could become something really special. Three big, skilled and mature forwards on one line. So basically I think he has two choices: He could go to the AHL and make some cash and learn to play at another level of physicality and be thought of as a decent player while doing so. or He could stay and (based on what we have seen from him lately) have an all American year next year with the Sioux. Then he will be a free agent with the notoriety and respect that comes with that type of season and be able to go play with Toews or Parise???

I like what was said here. Finley infront of the net would be a huge screen that is for sure. I would like to elaborate a little more on what I think is the biggest issue with the Sioux's play lately. Their passing. And it is not just that they need to get more crisp. They do need that, but the biggest issue I have seen is the passing and decision making when we are trying to get out of our zone and advance up ice. It is in these situations that we are trying way too many tricky or tough passes AND our opponents know this. They are ready for these extravagant cross-ice or through traffic passes, hawking those lanes and getting their sticks on the puck. This of course leads to a good chance that they will gain possession and have another offensive rush/possession. Another problem with our team is our T.O.P. It is way down from what it has been the last few years. Additionally, we are not good at regaining possession when the opponent takes our zone. So these neutral ice turnovers are very costly. It's not like in years past where we would go into our zone and basically take the puck back in a Grand Forks minute.. Solution: Be more patient when leaving our zone. Skate with the puck, double back, get it to skaters, ie Genaway, and skate with it. That will get the other team to stop hanging around for the passing lane they think is going to be used. One more thing. going back to the Friday night game against CC recall our OT Goal? It was a rush by the left wing, Malone, where he fired the puck on net looking for the rebound. Zajac found the rebound and buried it. I bring this up because we have been trying it over and over again, especially in the M. Tech series. The problem here is that what happens often is that the rebound goes out to the other side where our opponent's are waiting for it. This play results in a rush the other way way to many times AND given this we do not MAINTAIN possession. Don't get me wrong, I think the play is a good one, but we push it and the wing shoots on goal even if he has to get deep to do it. This makes it a shallow and shot yielding basically a toss of the puck to the other side in open ice that is up for grabs. Not good..

That's good news for many. BUt given the game is on the "FSSN" does that mean it will go over their satellite?? I need a Satellite feed or FOX Sports on Direct TV!!
-
Does anyone know why the games are not going to be on FOX Sports North Alternate?? The only reason I have Direct TV here in Denver is so I can have the sports pack that gives me the Gophers series and Badgers series and a couple on things like ESPN U and the former College Sports TV. And I have to say that in a year when we don't have a series in MSP and FOX bails on Wisconsin and CSTV is debunked, I have to think about turning off Direct TV all together. Maybe Wisconsin will show the womens volleyball on their internet feed in lieu of the hockey game like last year?? No wonder our economy is screwed there are too many stupid people making decisions that matter

I bought tickets to that game on Craig's list. The seats were owned by the head engineere who built the Pepsi Center (got lucky). They were front row club level exactly at center ice behind the benches. I leaned over the railing and yelled at the Gopher fans to sit down the entire game. I kinda went crAzy!! but it was such a riot!! Every time a gopher fan got up or yelled out I unrelentingly yelled at them and made fun of them from the sanctuary of my club level perch. It was right over their heads. Was the sweetest thing ever. Didn't matter how mean looking of a gopher fan it was anything went cause I was up in club. I was hi on my own supply that was for sure... I went so far as to convince my self that I single handedly took the gopher crowd in those sections out of the game. Gotta love those moments in life when you can be delusional and it's all good! Other than something like that, I love the corners a little toward the side not the end and in the first few rows of the upper bowl or top of lower bowl. ...At the old ralph we used to move from corner to corner to be on Sioux shooting end every period..

Did anyone notice that when the Sioux were getting tied up on the sideboards in the offensive zone they would, per one of their standard offensive cycling schemes, throw the puck to the other side (weak side) boards. Usually this is an effective cycling tactic for the Sioux but it seemed to me that it doesn't work so well on the big ice sheet. The winger on the recieving side who is in the center ice before the pass comes around to his side cannot get to the boards in time to do anything good with it. And it seemed that UAA was waiting for it and scheming odd man breakouts from this. because it's a reasonable turnover opportunity.. I'm pretty sure this is what happened when UAA scored and again when they almost scored on that rush at the end. I didn't get to see the whole game so I might be off on this. Im just curious if anyone else observed this happening??

ifinally got the game on the net i think?? is it the period break still?
-
Very well said! I would like to add that Hak didn't do the dash dance when one of our guys ( I forget who) gets pulled down by the facemask from behind during play and we get no call. It was on a delayed DU penalty on Friday night behind their net and it was VERY blantant. T

Denver University should fire Gwozdesky. He fails to control his team. In fact, he promotes undiciplined behavior. Think about last year when he pushed his players toward ours, again on the ice, in some sort of a sick make them fight bad soccer parent behavior. Then this year. The aritcle in the Denver has Cody Brookwell quoted as saying 'We talked about it' and "There is a time and place (to fight), and there are guys on this team willing to go with a guy. That's part of the game, and sometimes it needs to be dealt with." You could see in the Firday game that DU was Jacked-up after getting thier arrrsses kicked in a fair way and they got very cheap in repsonse. Please note, I have no problem with a team standing up for themselves. Heck the Sioux have to do that often, but we don't do it in a cheap way. Pioneers were pulling our players down by grabbing thier facemask from behind during play and didn't get calledh (how I have no idea), coming up behind our players and slamming repeaded cross checks in their backs during puck battles on the boards and constantly trying to break things down to a fight. I had the feeling all of this was promoted by Gwoz. ...not to mention that he is the most histrionic coach I have ever seen. He should go. IMHO

Com'on Sioux crush-um 100-0!!! Why? Because; Geneway is starting to take over games. Vandie has started to show signs that he can and will totally physically dominate opponents. Finley is back and playing the smartest most sound hockey I have seen him play. Duncan finally has a line. Who woulda thought it. hmmmm By the way he is amazing and I think he is the most underappreciated player on the team. Zajak has started to look like his brother in all play but scoring. Our seniors are doing the Porter dance.

Difference is we don't know what wheeler might have done or said to Fin in the moment before Fin started dancing with him. Depending on what it was there could be justification for his actions. BUT we do know that Hextall did not do anything in the moment or several moments before the move Stoa pulled. It isn't the hugest deal but I would say it is at least somewhat cheap given it was not provoked in the moment and he was in a defenseless position. You don't see that type of thing in hockey much and it is for sure a chicken sh_t move by Stoa. At least Wheeler was on an even two feet on the groud position with Fin. That is the main point I think, Hextall was in a defenseless position. Consider this, I could have done what Stoa did. In contrast, I literally wouldn't last two seconds going toe-to-toe with the most whimpy guy on the ice tonight, but put me on the ice with someone in Hextalls position and I could hurt him quite easily. All of you who question the cheepness of the play should think about that.... And screw woog. I like to listen to his commentary just cuz but the guy is a dork . I haven't listened to the FSN broadcast yet. I watched it on FSSN on Satellite but I will rewatch it on FSN. should be interesting. Last year Woog was drunk during the Friday game against the Sioux in MSP. I recorded that and my friends and I still listen to it and laugh at the word slurring babbling job that he did. Oh and by the way the boys on FSSN said that WOOGIE came over to talk to them between period and he was being pretty bizzar and babbling about things that they "couldn't repeat on the air"- So I'm guessing he was drunk again tonight. it must be all of the excitement that the Sioux series brings
