  1. CHN offers such a service (it was them starting it up that actually led me to stop trying to do it here, as it seems an area in which they'd have an advantage). I've never used it so can't comment on it's reliability or timeliness, though do use their composite scores as one of the inputs into SiouxSports and they do send down about half a dozen wrong scores a year (so, on average, you might get one bad one for a UND game every couple years, assuming they're evenly distributed).
  2. One last try at a general reminder -- everyone stop with the off-topic attacking each other and complaining about other posters (reports can be submitted with the report button and moderation can be discussed in the admin forum) and keep it about recruits.
  3. Please keep it about the Sioux recruits and avoid attacking other posters.
  4. Well, that kills my theory (test 2 is supposed to be a page with just the ad, test 3 is a copy of the front page without the ad code). I have a new theory, but I'll move this to PM so the rest of the world doesn't have to follow along... I'll post any progress here.
  5. Possible. My leading theory is still that it's a difference in which ad is served, but it could instead (or also) be something different between the machines like a plugin or a settings. Three quick tests, let me know which of the following three pages exhibit the problem and which don't: Test 1 Test 2 Test 3
  6. No problem, that alone is somewhat useful. The key is to look for what isn't rendering correctly (due to stated lack of plugin). The ad block in the upper right is empty -- that reinforces our guess that it's a google ad. Though they are personally and geographically targeted, which is why you guys could be getting different ones than I am, what's baffling is that they're so ubiquitous throughout the web that if it is the google ad, I'm not sure why you wouldn't be having this problem across the web (e.g. USCHO or GF Herald, etc...). However, this is an easy theory to test. I'll do some work on it and get back to you.
  7. I still can't duplicate it. Just tried a fresh install of Chrome on a Mac OS machine (so no Java), nada. This has me focusing in more on the ads, in that they're the one thing that could be different for each of us, because they do target you based on your geography and other sites you've been to. As mentioned above, if you get the popups every time, I can create a version of the page without those ads and see if it has the same behavior for you. If not, try to notice if its associated with particular ads.
  8. Fascinating... that eliminates anything in the forum software. Thinking about what's common between the forum and the front page really leaves two obvious candidates -- a Google ad (though why wouldn't you guys be having that problem on half the Internet, then) or the Facebook integration plugins (again, nearly ubiquitous across news sites these days). If you could get me a screenshot of it asking for the plugin, that would be awesome. Also, does it happen every single time you load the page? If so, I could create test versions of the page with particular pieces removed and we could see which cause the issue.
  9. This one I can answer Type the text into the document first, highlight it, then click the link button. CNN That will then turn the highlighted text into a link.
  10. Huh. The forum doesn't use any Java, as far as I know, and I can't duplicate on chrome. The only third party code integrated into the forum is the Google ad at the top (used on seemingly every site on the web). I'll do some looking into it.
  11. Though somewhat meaningless at this point in the season, RPI is the one everyone pays some attention to because its the only rating that's known to be a big part of tournament selection and seeding. However, it should definitely be ignored until mid-season. KenPom attempts to predict game outcomes, not rank teams based on performance to date this season. Eventually the two come close to converging, but they're very different (but both interesting) measures.

I've been out of touch for about an hour... What's the current time/status and how do they look?
  13. The formula is doing what it should with a limited number of games. RPI (as generally defined cross-sport) is simply a team's winning percentage, its opponents' winning percentage, and its opponents' opponents' winning percentage (the above link folds the last two into a single "SOS" measure). Basketball adds a couple tweaks for good wins and bad losses. When you look at the values instead of the ranks, NJIT has an SOS of .0000, tied with everyone but 8 teams. As described above, RPI isn't seeded with anything like last year's results or polls or anything, so there is no information yet that says NJIT's schedule is any harder or easier than North Carolina's -- both are tied for 9th at .0000. One point of potential confusion -- of the teams that have non-0 RPIs, Texas A&M jumps out as the only one with an SOS of .0000. That's because the opponents' win% and opponents' opponents' win% (the two components of SOS) exclude games against you, and A&M is the only team to have played a single opponent who hasn't played anyone else. Notice that Liberty also has an SOS of .0000 for the same reason, but their RPI is also 0 because they lost so have a win percentage of 0.
  14. I apparently can't read the original article any more, so I'll just soliloquize... (though there's already been a huge amount of discussion from when it closed, including my own thoughts). Nonetheless, I'll try again... the old Whitey's (90s) felt like you were in the same bar that people were sitting around in the 60s. That was its charm. The food was bar food, but just the right value -- I could afford a couple beers there most nights, a couple beers for me and friends and a burger basket on good nights. I knew there were people there eating steaks paying 3x as much, but they were somehow similarly there for a good deal on a steak. I could sit at a booth for hours as friends came and went, or pop in for a quick snack. It was unflappably lacking in any pretense. I only made the new Whitey's once in the 00's, but it just felt like any new, modern bar. It was nice. There was nothing wrong with it. But it didn't even attempt to resemble the charm of the old.
  15. I'm not particulary still pining for Lennon today, irrespective of SIU's struggles -- like Joe Gibbs, you can't go home again. Coaching is a lot more than X's and O's, Lennon's success at UND was a product of the time (his experience to date, the recruits, the program's position and reputation, etc...). There's no particular reason to think he would duplicate that success at UND today. I've always wished he hadn't left when he did. The timing was particularly tough to swallow, given how much of a driving force he was behind the D-I move. I do think the program would have struggled less with the continuity of his staying, but that ship has sailed.
  16. Agreed, these personal attacks on a private individual are way out of line. They need to stop immediately.
  17. There seem to be some limits on the upload size, which didn't allow a full-sized photo. I resized it for you and sent you a PM.
  18. We needed two scores to win, got one. Now a TD does it
  19. Wow, was that just what we needed. Come on D, let's get it back.
  20. This is really out of line. Everyone, drop the politics please.
  21. Copy & paste don't work, there's not really a good cross-platform way to accept a pasted image in a web browser. Uploading a local file or a providing the URL to an image on the net should, though. PM me (hover over my name and click "send message") with the photobucket URL you're trying to use and I'll see if I can help.
  22. I can't currently reproduce it on Chrome latest -- for me the background screen goes gray and a white popup window with a green title bar appears. However, I know a lot of little layout tweaks were made to improve browser compatibility, so my best guess is that you're getting some combination of the new pages and some cached content on your PC. First, hitting escape causes that popup window to close, so at least can you back out of that without having to close the window/tab. Second, to make sure you don't have any old stuff lying around on your machine, go to the little wrench, options, under the hood, "Clear browsing data" button, uncheck everything but "empty the cache" and hit ok. That won't break any of your logins or cookies or autocomplete or anything it will just make sure your Chrome isn't serving up old versions of anything.
  23. Got it. Fixed.
  24. Just to be clear on what I'm looking for, that behavior changed with the patches I applied yesterday? (That is, up until today clicking the title thread jumped to the last unread post?) For now as a workaround, near the top right of the first page of each thread is a "jump to last unread" link that you can use. It's an extra click, so reasonably annoying, but it will get you by while I'm looking into the other.
  25. Ok, I put in some patches that make the photo importer a lot better. In addition to local files, in can now pull photos from URL or your facebook profile (if you link -- which is actually a handy way to login if you're usually logged into facebook).
