Problem with NCAA Pick 'Em Bracket Login
jimdahl replied to Air Force One's topic in SiouxSports.com
Short version... there were some problems in the past with passwords or usernames that contain non-alphabetic/non-numeric characters. I'll get in touch with each of you by PM to investigate further. Long version (more technical)... leveraging the forum login required me to try to duplicate its password handling. It does some odd encoding that required me to put in some patches to deal with a few common punctuation marks in usernames (! and > come to mind). At the beginning of this week I tried to replace that code with the exact code from the forum software, which should have actually made all such problems go away (and did solve the problems for the specific users I was testing with), but certainly could have introduced some other problems. I'll review the code myself, and get in touch with the affected people. -
That's actually one of the biggest reasons I started paying attention to the KRACH predictions, because it's an interesting comparison for measuring bias. In this case, UND fans REALLY like UMD. KRACH only gives you a 30% chance of emerging from the region. Another interesting one, because it goes the other way on a WCHA team, is KRACH giving BC vs. CC 69%-31% odds, while we picked it 88-12. Sioux fans seem to over-respect UMD, BC, and UND; and under-respect Yale, Union, UNH, Michigan, Denver, and CC. No real shocks there, though it also wouldn't have been shocking if BC had gone the other way. Wishful thinking, I guess

Here are the aggregate picks so far... Distribution of picks

My point in posting this isn't because some SayAnything bloggers are members of the community (though they're free to comment), but because the larger story has generated a lot of buzz among webmasters over the past six months. North Dakota blogger sued over unauthorized use of photo Essentially, this company acquires the copyright to widely distributed stories and photos from the Las Vegas Review Journal and Denver Post, then sues everyone who has reproduced the material. They threaten damages of hundreds of thousands of dollars and seizure of the domain name. If you, as a targeted site owner, do nothing then the default judgment kicks in. So, you have to either spend whatever it takes to fight them in Nevada courts, or settle out of court (settlements rumored to be offered in the $3000 range). It sounds sort of like an extortion racket meets copyright troll situation. The good news is that judges aren't buying it. Copyright troll Righthaven achieves spectacular "fair use" loss

Here's how KRACH would pick it: KRACH Predicts the NCAA Tournament Toward the end of the week I'll post how the community's picks deviate from that. Usually we overpredict UND to win, but judging by this thread I wonder what we'll see this year
-
Yes, please, stay out. However, feeling good about this year myself, let me pull out an old tradition started by AZSIOUX and sweeten the pot a little bit. In this, likely the last year as the Fighting Sioux, I'll give $50 gift card to the official SiouxShop for stocking up on Fighting Sioux gear to whoever wins the performance scoring (ties will be broken by random draw). We've never had a tie, but that's because the Sioux haven't won in the 8 years I've had this going. I suspect if UND wins it all we'll see something like a 50-way tie for first.

I think during the show he said he had watched two Yale games this year, and named them. He was pretty critical of Yale, saying that they got where they are on hot goaltending, and that can really fail you come tournament time when you face an unknown/strong team that's going to pepper him with shots.

2011 Bracket Every year the NCAA changes how the regions matchup, so ever since messing it up once a few years back I'm kind of paranoid. I think I have the bracket set up right (East meets Northeast and West meets Midwest) but let me know if you encounter any problems; if there are none, I'll start to distribute the link more publicly in a couple hours.

Nice timing on the photo

And if Dartmouth holds on to win (currently up 5-2 with 9:00 remaining in the 3rd), that plus Michigan's win should get CC in. That will leave RPI watching Cornell-Yale.

Woops, sorry. Also just saw that you had already posted it earlier in the thread (missed it because it was a link instead of embed). I'll delete my post to the bad one...

Leave the unrelated politics out of this forum, please.

The number of remaining games is small enough that it's now possible to accurately describe the remaining possibilities. Here's my stab, taken from my NCAA Hockey Tournament Field Shaping Up post (which has a lot more details on the odds of each team finishing with each particular ranking): Other than the AHA champ, Cornell is the only possible non-top 16 autobid , so #14 in PWR will make it. #15 will if Cornell loses. In the NCAA tournament: Yale, UND, BC, Michigan, Miami, Denver, Minnesota-Duluth, Merrimack, Union, Notre Dame, New Hampshire, Western Michigan In: Autobid goes to Winner of Air Force/RIT In if Cornell loses: Nebraska-Omaha, CC, RPI In if Cornell wins: Cornell and two of those three (UNO, CC, RPI) Out: Maine, Dartmouth, BU A little more on UNO vs. CC vs. RPI (remember, which only matters if Cornell beats Yale, otherwise all three are in) – Dartmouth beats or ties Colgate, Michigan or Notre Dame wins — RPI is out Dartmouth beats or ties Colgate, Notre Dame ties Michigan, Miami beats Western Michigan — RPI is out Dartmouth beats or ties Colgate, Notre Dame ties Michigan, Western Michigan beats Miami — UNO is out Colgate beats Dartmouth, Michigan beats Notre Dame — CC is out Colgate beats Dartmouth, Notre Dame beats Michigan, Western Michigan beats Miami — UNO is out Colgate beats Dartmouth, Notre Dame beats Michigan, Miami beats Western Michigan –- RPI is out Colgate beats Dartmouth, Michigan ties Notre Dame, Miami beats Western Michigan — CC is out Colgate beats Dartmouth, Michigan ties Notre Dame, Western Michigan beats Miami — UNO is out

I know there was a snappytv link earlier, but Bob posted a YouTube version...

Could. Odds are still in their favor of finishing #12, but falling is definitely highly possible. PWR possibilities updated with all of tonight's results NCAA Tournament Field Shaping Up

I got really confused, I was looking up other results and both CHNews and USCHO list the game as finished with UND winning 6-2.

Yeah, I'm not positive of the reasoning, but am happy to give my impressions. As I said here, a little inconsistency is part of the tax we pay for having multiple moderators. I still think it's well worth it. The Lucia thread is still at least 50% about the topic (see the discussions of Hill) right up until the end, AND there was moderator intervention (see the post asking people to move back on topic). I think that thread has been handled just about right. The two threads are actually pretty similar in content, so my guess is the "Gophers Chokers" thread shot itself in the foot for being a cheap shot ("chokers" in the title, "goofers" in the subtitle). We've definitely stopped threads in the past just for being classless (e.g. "the official rip on <player> thread"), even when the topics of discussion are legitimate and occurring elsewhere. We do try to moderate a little civility, and the thread titles do reflect back the forum and its membership.

Who will be there will be whichever 4 of the 16 win two games in a row. As to who the 16 will be, as I said here... I think the following 9 are in for sure: Yale, North Dakota, Boston College, Michigan, Miami, Denver, Minnesota-Duluth, Merrimack, Union I believe whichever team wins the AHA tournament gets an autobid. That's 1 of: Holy Cross, Air Force, Connecticut, RIT That leaves 6 of these 10, depending on how the conference tournaments go: Notre Dame, New Hampshire, Western Michigan, Nebraska-Omaha, Colorado College, Dartmouth, Rennselaer, Boston University, Maine, Alaska Anchorage If any team not on one of the above lists wins a conference tournament (Bemidji St., Northeastern, or Cornell/Colgate) they'll also make it, reducing the number of teams that make it from the pool of 10 accordingly. EDIT -- The post order is a little messed up because I was trying to update this but deleted it
