What? I'll grant you the first two are possible but football will never be in the black let alone make the money hockey does. Start with a huge and expensive coaching staff, triple the number of scholarships on the cost side and a quarter of the number of games on the revenue side. For those that are so hung up on looking at dollars and cents football has lost more than anything, including women's hockey. But neither is going any place. Women's hockey just needs a Gene Roebuck to breathe new life into the program and expand interest. Idalski doesn't seem to have been a great ambassador for the program in the community.

You don't get statement wins against 1-4 teams. Also leaving your starter in a blowout when a team can start getting chippy doesn't make a lot of sense.

I wouldnt use any team logo. For the conference titles use an image of the macnaughton or Penrose cups (and I guess the broadmoor for 1982) and for the ncaa titles use the Frozen Four logos of that year or the ncaa logo for the older titles. Puts emphasis on the actual hardware.

I'm guessing something similar would have been said about women's basketball in 1988. Women's hockey is one of 3 sports that has a realistic possibility of winning a national title and one of two that can produce Olympic athletes. Cutting it would be idiotic. A change in coaching however might be logical, especially to someone with local roots and more charisma. As mentioned football actually loses more money and its presence has required us to be in a conference that a total geographic mismatch with vastly higher travel costs and results in virtually zero revenue from opposing fans. Cutting sports should be the last option. And I think you have to take all the reported budget numbers with a grain of salt. What is undeniable is that marketing and promotion need to improve across the department and that doesn't necessarily require more money. I'd also love to see a lot more transparency from REA regarding budget figures.

Utah is a school to keep an eye on.

Wouldn't bother me as I think 8 is the ideal conference size for schedule purposes under current pair wise and I think NCHC performance has borne that out.

Sad to hear about the passing of John Saunders. He was a great journalist and probably the most prominent Western Michigan hockey alum. A true professional in every sense.

I did say earlier that Arizona St. alone would make sense, because of the potential exposure they bring, and that with 9 teams you could have a very workable scheduling system that would preserve a 24 game league slate. It's a theoretical 10th team ( or any addition that is not the Sun Devils) that I think is unneeded. As for a revamped tv contract, I have know idea what CBS would pay. While I understand ASU is vastly a larger market, I think its quite clear in the small world that is college hockey, UND is the team that delivers ratings (proven across all networks) and that's ultimately what matters.

I'll ask again. Why should the NCHC expand? They are rolling along just fine with 8 teams. What is gained by bringing more mouths to the table to feed. The ECAC and Hockey East can prosper with 12 teams because they only play 2 games vs. conference opponents, which is possible because of the close proximity of teams. Playing a larger number of non-conference games (and winning them) is the key to getting teams to the NCAA tournament. The NCHC has succeeded tremendously in this area and has obviously found the right formula. Why mess up a good thing?

I don't think the NCHC needs to expand at all, but I don't mind the idea of Arizona state. The exposure they bring is obvious and it would be great for recruiting. I also think they can be added alone. 9 teams is fine. That allows you to maintain a 24 game schedule play 4 teams 4 times and the remaining four just twice. So you would play every school home and away 3 times in 4 years. Keeping 10 nonconference games is important for pair wise but would allow Denver and CC to schedule non conference series if they want to play 4 times annually. Adding a 10th team almost requires more conference games, which would hurt the chances of the NCHC advancing more teams to the NCAA tournament. I think the only other team is under serious consideration would be Bowling Green, to consolidate the MAC schools.

CBS and Turner are paying 1.1 billion a year for March Madness until 2032. You don't kill the goose that lays the golden eggs.

This is what a color commentator exists for. The play by play guy is supposed to tell you what's happening and not be such a brutal Homer. Sure is great for the play by play guy to have history but you have to start somewhere. This guy could end up being a long time voice of the Hawks.
