  1. There was an article, probably in The Forum, that outlined where NDSU was going to increase women's financial aid to counter the increase of financial aid for football. I know basketball and volleyball are both sports that would be maxed out (gain of 5 and 4, respectively). As for the rest of the sports, the gain by maxing out the financial aid level (this does not account for the scenario that NDSU did not fully fund at the DII level, which would only increase the numbers): track and CC (+5.4), golf(+.6), soccer(+3.1), softball (+4.8). Of course, if that's not enough to comply with Title IX proportionately to the student demographics, there will be a brand new Equestrian Center sitting on NDSU land, in which the NDSU Equine Science program is in a stategic alliance with, so I would venture to guess that women's equestrian might be added. That would be 15 additional grants.
  2. Immediate metro areas (i.e. difficult to distinguish city limits without signs). Drive from the Walmart in Dilworth to the Old Navy in West Fargo, and if the city limit signs were not there, it would be hard to distinguish where one city ends and the next begins (except the main ave. bridge, but GF/EGF has the same issue). Drive from Grand Forks to either Manvel, Thompson, or the GFAFB, and there's lots of farmland on the long drive.
  3. Today Show had a feature of about six minutes on Fargo, and I believe it was also in USA Today or some other print media.
  4. Actually, Fargo and Grand Forks are nearly indentical in the "sprawl" category : Fargo - Pop. 91,204 (2002 estimated) Area- 37.9 square miles Grand Forks - Pop. 48,546 (2002 estimated) Land Area 19.2 square miles
  5. I think you would still have the issue of the "have-nots" trying to drag the floors down, instead of the ceilings. There are schools that are capable of competing with much fewer grants than what the maximum is, and they might be excluded from the division with a floor introduced. Winona State (approx. 15 grants) and UC-Davis (approx. 5 grants when they were DII) are two examples.
  6. That's $2.00-$2.50 if you have a decent-sized SUV. Never understood why gas prices are so much higher in GF. I never leave Fargo if I'm headed up to GF without a full tank of gas. $1.79 at most places in Fargo right now with some places cheaper, $1.71 about a week or two ago. Here's a decent site to see what prices are like around the state- http://www.northdakotagasprices.com/
  7. Didn't Koening redshirt? If he did, he would be stupid to transfer to another DI school, as he would only be allowed three seasons to play with the five year ticker and having to sit a year.
  8. KFAN is a day late. The press conference was today- here's the news release- Roger Thomas Named NCC Commissioner
  9. Taylor wasn't around for the "push" for DI hockey at NDSU. That was the brainchild of Bob Entzion, who ended up at NDSU from UND. It was his alternative to a move to DI, in which NDSU was already studying due to interest from alumni and Team Makers.
  10. Looks like a done deal from The Herald- Thomas to resign at UND
  11. The Big Sky "courted" about 15 schools, other than those that had already shown interest in the Big Sky. That included schools that may or may not have been interested in moving to DI, as well as DI schools. Sicatoka, The "at this time" was replaced with "only schools that a consensus could be reached".
  12. I think the former Bison LB is Tyler Morrow. He was a 2002 recruit, and transferred to NDSCS. He had a medical redshirt last year at NDSCS, and supposedly has three years of eligibility left. Here's his bio-
  13. Here's a good link for you- Schools that sponsor NCAA DI men's ice hockey You can see what other sports each school sponsors (and in what division) and what conferences they are in. By my count, there's 58 schools that sponsor DI men's ice hockey- 34 are DI (13 with DI-A football, 14 with DI-AA football, and 7 with no football program), 19 DII schools, and 5 DIII schools.
  14. Especially since the previous proposal to reduce DII football grants to 30 only failed by six votes a few years ago.
  15. Depends. Fargo has a near-monopolistic theater system, but doesn't seem to be lacking in terms of lack of movies or seats. The waterpark and Columbia Mall theaters would seem to have a great advantage in location. I would venture to say that one or two of the Carmike theaters will become a vacant building within a year. Seriously, is there a lack of seats or that great of a lack of decent movies in Grand Forks? Inquiring minds want to know.
  16. It can still be a mullet, even if you cannot see the ears: Example: CamaroMullet
  17. With the two new theaters, Grand Forks will have two more screens than Fargo/Moorhead (34, as opposed to 32), with about one-third the population in the immediate metro area. I can't see 34 screens being supported with only 4 budget screens. Fargo essentially has 24 "feature screens" (32 minus the Safari 7 budget movies and the 1 screen at the Fargo Theater that features classics and niche films), and there's plenty of duplication of new films on multiple screens. Are the lines that long at the current GF theaters? Are Grand Forks residents missing out on a lot of movies? I know there was an uproar about Fahrenheit 911, but that seemed pretty trivial to me.
  18. The previous version of football grant reductions (down to 30), only failed by six votes a couple years ago. Good to see the vast majority aren't in favor of such a drastic cut this time around.
  19. True. Change that to bitter and resentful. Ruley is now more than happy to return the same sentiment, but three non-DI spots fill up fast (as they have). The explanation I heard is that Amy wanted to schedule the regional schools first, and then go after DI schools, whereas SDSU went after the DI schools first. With games against Minnesota and Tennessee in the near future, I doubt Amy is backing away from competition. On the men's side, Miles would only schedule DI teams that had a return trip to Fargo in the contract. SDSU took some guarantees, some of which were not very big.

    Division I

It's more of an issue with the men's teams as opposed to the women's. The men seem more influenced by the level of competition, the women seem to want to stay closer to home.

    Division I

Decent article about the DI finances from Ryan Bakken: COLLEGE ATHLETICS: The dollars behind Division I I thought all of Bakken's articles were supposed to be funny? Somewhat interesting that UND is using tuition waivers to fund women's hockey.
  22. I agree 100%. I also believe that UND should move to DI if they want to support the highest level of athletics in all sports (second highest in football), can financially afford the move, and believes that DI is the best fit for their athletic program. Pride, emotion, or even keeping up with the Chapman's are not proper reasoning to make the move. More like, NDSU was tired of trying to get the rest of the NCC to move to DI for the last 25 years, lost interest in trying to pull along a bunch of boat anchors, and moved on with the schools that shared the same vision. True, but what would the reasoning behind it be if it made no logical or financial sense to do so? Ahhh yes. What better way to appease those opposing a move to DI than to proclaim, "But we were FORCED to do it!". Anything short of Myles Brand holding a gun to Kupchella's head is not forcing UND to do anything. Influence, possibly, but not force. UND can choose what they want to do. What actions could those possibly be? A reduction of football grants to 24? What's so different about a reduction to 24 than a reduction to 50, 45,40 or 36? Losing regional rivalries? Very true, but again, they won't be forced. Thanks for the calmer tone.
