  1. His ability to call plays wouldn't be a concern. He's been doing that since hs and at higher levels than fcs. He would need to decide if he calls plays or if his oc calls plays but that wouldn't be my concern. He could have an immediate impact on recruiting but more importantly can he put together a staff and could they recruit?
  2. You bring up what I think is most valid concern. Whether or not he could put together a strong staff in short time. Having connections isn't necessary. Just a factor and not the most important.
  3. Frankly if that's the way it rubs you then wear a coat. I'm not related to Bollinger and if you read my posts I have simply made a case for why he is a viable candidate and if chosen why I think he would do a good job. Don't know if he will apply. I am loyal to UND athletics and want the best coach available. I didn't say his lack of experience isn't a factor I said his age isn't. He will soon be 34 or 35. He was a teammate of my son-in-law's with Cowboys and I haven't spoken with him since. Doubt he could pick me out of a crowd. I'm not emotionally attached. Just don't figure we should miss a chance to interview him cuz he may have stolen someone's prom date 15 or 20 yrs ago. He has an impressive résumé and I find him an intriguing and viable candidate based on what he can bring to the table. Not sure he is best candidate but I haven't seen the list and I'm not on search committee. He has impressed an awful lot of fb people at FBS and nfl levels and they aren't emotionally attached either.
  4. No. He should be a finalist if he applies. I believe he is already a great coach, based on his success as hs head coach and FBS asst. When he was with the Cowboys he was highly respected. Myles Austin thought a lot of him. They liked his intangibles and recognized his leadership skills. He didn't succeed at Wisconsin cuz of his great arm but because of his smarts and leadership skills as well as being a great athlete. He was an excellent student and well liked and respected by his coaches and teammates. Anyone who claims he is too young just doesn't understand. He understands the culture at UND and in GF, N.Dak. and Mn, Wisconsin. He is a leader and a winner. Very personable and excellent recruiter. I was in Pittsburgh the week after Muss let go. Pitt fans like him and think he has made a difference. I would need to know who else applies before I say hire him but we would be fortunate to get him. Pflugrad should also get interview. Not sure who else has applied. I was told yesterday Bollinger would apply but that is third hand so not sure.
  5. Faison needs to move quickly on this. New coach will need to put together staff and sit down with present team to keep them here and get recruiting going immediately. Anyone have update on candidates?
  6. Ya gotta wonder why a guy with no hc experience and that young is a viable candidate for the best fcs team in the country but those are reasons we wouldn't want him here. Just wondering.
  7. No surprise AC players blindsided. Bohl has always been about Bohl first. he is an arrogant jerk but he is a good coach.Wouldn't be surprised if Taylor didn't know but wouldn't believe him either way. I would think Vigen might be next guy. That would be his dream job. Good recruiter and good oc. Minimizes their turmoil. Course if they listen to some of our fans they would say he is too young and hasn't been a hc.
  8. He may not be best candidate but if what was mentioned isn't significant what is? You learn to read defenses and what will beat a defense in the film room and calling audibles. You learn the other teams strengths and weaknesses and how to exploit them. You also learn a lot about coaching and managing your staff and players . ESPN guys render their opinion by talking to coaches and players. Someone thinks he is good and they report it. Hard to believe anyone who played at hs level or beyond doesn't understand these things are important. I'm pretty sure Faison understands.
  9. No, it's the other way around. The fact that he is a great leader made him a good quarterback. He was with the jets when they were terrible. He started a game for the Vikings and one for the Cowboys. He was a decent back up in the nfl. He has had instant success as a high school head coach and college assistant. Funny to think cuz he wasn't nfl star he wouldn't be a good coach. He will be an excellent coach whatever level he is cuz of the man he is. His experiences at Wisconsin, the NFL, turning around a hs program at Hill Murray, and coaching at Pitt only enhance his abilities. I don't know about the Vikes or Jets but he was respected by his teammates in Dallas. Maybe they have lower expectations than some of our bloggers.
  10. If someone doesn't think Bollinger would be a great candidate I don't think they understand leadership. Don't equate an opinion that he is a great candidate with an opinion that he would be the only candidate. Bollinger is a quality guy. He is smart and he is a proven leader. He has experience at multiple levels and knows the type of talent needed. It has been a long time since I was a position coach at UND, or a recruiter but the important fundamentals of leadership, organization, communication, integrity and credibility remain. He also has experience working with today's student athletes. If anyone doesn't believe a guy with Bollinger's experience and success at Wisconsin and professional fb and immediate coaching success at hs and college level doesn't make him a top candidate then you don't understand college fb. or coaching. He will be successful. The fact he is from gf is irrelevant. He would have immediate credibility with athletes and coaches. I don't know he is even interested.
  11. B John Barry College of Business unless he declines naming rights. He has already given more than $25,000,000. He and Linda Pankratz led the Spirit Campaign. I believe net worth over $1 billion. He also gave over $1million to AC for their business program. When he was given Sioux Award he stated his avocation in life now is philanthropy.
  12. I want a winning program and winning teams. If I'm interviewing and you don't understand what the campus environment, alumni support, student involvement, uniforms etc. do for your program you aren't going to be successful. This isn't high school or NAIA. A number of successful college coaches complain about how much time that takes but also how important it is. You need to understand marketing, social media and diversity. Lou Saban brought in a consulting firm to Alabama when he got there. One of most important things he said they did was hire a female staff member cuz of the number of kids who had not had male authority figures in their lives this lady prevented a lot of problems. There is so much more to college coaching than many think. For those who want someone to be an in your face screamer I would remind u that so much of coaching is teaching, mentoring and motivating. If you are any good you shouldn't need to regress to that style. Your players need to play for you cuz they respect you and trust you not cuz they are afraid of getting yelled at.
  13. It will take $200k to get FBS asst. Bollinger is position coach likely $175k or a little higher. Other big time programs similar. I haven't heard he would apply but would be a top candidate. He is well known, highly respected, is a winner, a leader and very bright. He knows talent and what it takes to win at FBS and NFL level. He is organized and charismatic. He knows Wisconsin, Minn and Dakotas. He also knows other areas of country. He played in NY, Minn, Texas and Florida. He has a name with marketing benefit. He can lead and motivate. These guys can all coach. The guy that can sell Sioux fb to alumni, students the area as well as recruits is more attractive than someone who won at lower level. I'm not saying he is only guy or even top guy but he would be a finalist on anyone's list who wants present players to stay at und instead of leave and would have instant credibility with area coaches and students. He is one of those guys you enjoy being around and would go to war with. Kids usually will play for those guys.
  14. Top priority for 2014 is to try n keep the kids we have. Jackson is a stud and will get a pro look. If anyone thinks having kids at this level isn't a pain then u don't understand the business. I believe Edwards also plans to leave and go juco route to FBS level. Can't afford to lose these guys. Coaches need to be able to mentor these guys and work with them. Carr also risk to leave and I don't see Bartels staying if he doesn't start. If we can keep our present team, then we need to have some luck with his and juco kids who r out there. The ac has lots of scholarship $$ this yr which makes it tougher. Would help if Bohl decides to move to big time.
  15. He led the Badgers to Rose Bowl and Big Ten Championships. Played with Jets, Vikes, and Cowboys and stint in USFL at end of his career. Turned Hill Murray around in first year as head coach. He is QB coach for Pitt Panthers and highly respected by people here. If we can get a guy of this caliber, you get him now cuz he will move up the ranks in due time. He is in his 30's, not too young. How old to you want him to be? Brooks was an excellent student and if anyone doesn't think spending time in NFL as starting and back-up QB and QB coach at Pitt isn't as good as being a head coach at Sioux Falls, or some other small college, then I would strongly disagree. The guy can coach. When you hire you need to be able to pick those guys who can coach and recruit. Bollinger can do both and would be a great head coach.
  16. Mayville State grad. Harold was good friend of former UND coach Jerry Olson.
  17. The AC has doen a much better job of marketing for a number of years. They have done so for the school as well as their athletics. With their recent success in FB it has been a real boost free of charge. An article in Sports Illustrated years ago reviewed the studies done about the positive impact athletic success had on the schools enrollment and donations to the school not just the athletic department. At the time they used the Georgetown BB as the example. Were I the president of UND or the head of the UND alumni assn, I would meet with the Atheltic director, the head of enrollment services, the head of the Alumni office, my vice presidents and Deans. I would give them the responsibility of making clear to all UND faculty the importance of the UND brand and how UND athletics will benefit everything from enrollment to how well we can fund our Engr and Geography Depts. I would also assign a task force with the responsibility to return in early January with a comprehensive plan to make sure we reach all area prospective students, and we reach out to all of our present students to insure we keep them on campus. I would also invest in a competent marketing firm to assist us. Freshmen should be admitted to athletic activites at times and coordinate that with a social funcition of some sort. All of our athletic teams and coaches should be eating at the different dorms, fraternities and sororities to show appreciation for whatever support we get. There needs to be competition between dorms and greeks for attendence and support at these events. Attending UND and our atheltic events needs to be an event for our students. Enrollment services used to send admissions counselors to virtually every area of N. Dak and northern Mn. They don't do that anymore and even scof at the idea. We are losing our edge more by what we aren't doing than by what someone else is doing.
  18. It isn't fair to judge either of these guys this year. Both have made similar mistakes. Bartels moved the team last week but still threw 2 ints and should have had a 3rd in the 1st half when he threw to 2 defenders who fought over it and neither got it. He also fumbled again but it bounced back up into his hands. He seemed to get to his reads quicker when he had time. They have both had good moments and both struggled. I don' t think Bartels would have been able to take the physical punishment Mollberg did in the previous games where he had no protection. Joe didn't have much of a chance at UNA and Bartels didn't have any chance in the previous 4-5 games. IF Bartels isn't the starter I believe he will leave. Mollberg will battle for the job but isn't going to spend 3 years on the bench. Don't blame either of them. I would play both of them the rest of the year because they both need to be evaluated.
  19. Bringing a fire Muss sign is about the person carrying the sign. It does nothing to affect change. Any AD worth their salt isn't going to make a decision cuz some rube brings a sign. I would wonder what kind of life you lead that makes you feel better bringing such a sign. Coaches don't worry about what we say or post on a blog nor what some guy puts on a sign. Coaches are well aware their jobs are on the line. When you have been at a school for this long and the program regresses like we have this year and attendance drops and freshman enrollment for the school drops you already know you are in trouble. A sign won't change that. Faison is aware how most fans feel and that most fans seem to demand a change. It might be distracting to players and discouraging for potential recruits. Those recruits already are told by other schools there is a good chance their will be a change here but the signs will only create more negativity and we have enough of that already. We are free to try and bring a sign but we are also free to show some class and not kick a guy when he is down.
  20. Why would you do that? It won't get him fired any sooner and you will wish you didn't. It will be a pain in the butt to carry around.
  21. Don't need to get along with the AD nor like the AD, coach or president to donate. Doesn't help our programs to stop donating. When we do so, I believe we become part of the problem rather than part of the solution. Food for thought.
  22. This will be the most important decision of Faison's career to date and will also be a reflection of Kelly's presidency. The success of our athletic teams (or lack there of) is an important part of the enrollment numbers for the University as an institution and donations for the University and Alumni Assn. For too many people, athletic teams provide the opportunity to associate with something positive and public that they feel a part of. That is why when college teams are successful enrollments increase and donations go up. I believe that is also why some people get so worked up over their favorite teams. Sicatoka is correct. This needs to be a national search and we need to hire best possible candidate. IF they have no ties to UND they will develop that relationship. Their are assistants with UND ties who can serve that role.
  23. UND will need to be prepared to pay our assistants more. That was something Lennon worked for when he was here. We will need to pay a head coach over $200,000 with an upside for incentives for attendance, grad rates, GPA, no legal issues, championships, playoff appearance etc. Coordinators will need to get around $100,000. We need to get new practice facility done. Will take right people and a lot of work and dedication by players and the University support folks, but this team can be playoff competitive within 2-3 years if not next year. A good coach will demand a 3-5 year guarantee.
  24. They had better think a lot of a student taking the time to call. I would ask you to come in and also talk about how to improve student attendence and any ideas you might have to improve the game day experience for students.
  25. I will send PM. Have 4 Sec. 101 at face value.
