  1. So the yellow, black and red were the accent colors of the feathers in the Sioux head logo. And in the way I used them in the hawk's head, we could read as war paint on the hawk . . . hence a fighting hawk. We just wouldn't tell anyone at NCAA level that. To them it would just be some colors
  2. funny . . . i'm 100% German! And I would not be offended if a college was called "Fighting Germans". Just sayin
  3. putting together some suggestions from people here . . . but really just doing what i want to do because nobody is paying me for this Adding some colors from the Sioux era makes this a little more interesting, and might even get a slight smile from the die-hard "Sioux or nothing" crowd. but whatever. i'm just havin fun.
  4. Thanks for the props on my UND logo moc' up.  Graphic designer by trade . . . but was misinformed.  I was told that the University had already picked an agency to work with.

My bad.  Should have looked into it more.

Anyway, I guess I'm not missing anything by designing a logo for a fan base that really doesn't want it ;)

    cheers

  5. If i had to guess, I'd say they have presented logo concepts. If the University was going to narrow down the field simply by portfolio work alone, they may have missed out on something really unique and cool. In my industry, design is done on spec, so it costs the client nothing more to procure multiple designs.
  6. The more i see these "birds with teeth" logos, the more i like my super simple design... Someone asked why i didn't put in for the RFP. I said "i'd rather not design for a client that is forced into the project and who's users won't like it no matter what it is".
  7. I'm on the opposite side of all of this, I guess. I'd hope that the new logo has NOTHING to do with the old one. I don't call ex girlfriends just to hear their voice . . . I don't test drive a Lamborghini knowing I can't afford it. Move on and have a really great version of the new name and logo, instead of a watered down version of the old logo that will just be a reminder of who they're NOT anymore. That said, I'll miss the old Sioux name and logo. But I'm over it.
  8. If I had to guess . . . the new logo will be used everywhere.
  9. My High School went by "Lakers" . . . then merged with another school for sports and went by "Rebels", but we couldn't use any "confederate" imagery. Honestly, we had no real mascot or logo for either name. FIghting Hawks ain't so bad from where I've come from. Oh yeah, and my college was "Yellow Jackets", and our school colors were black and orange. WTF??
  10. This whole thread has me picturing some crabby old man setting alone somewhere clutching his UND Flickertail sweater in his hands, mumbling something about how stupid the Sioux name and logo is.
  11. Nordic or Viking would be out . . . Portland State Vikings. And why should that be allowed? Vikings were notorious for being horrible people. Shouldn't Scandinavians be offended by that? Personally, I was pulling for something in the aviation theme. Bombers, Jets, etc . . . Think of what they could have done with AV and sound for home games! Air raid sirens, explosions, any music from Top Gun I'm over it, though. GO HAWKS. There are way bigger problems to deal with in my world than a team name and logo.
  12. I think it's pretty safe to say that anyone who is hell bent on NOT accepting the FIghting Hawks name isn't going to accept any logo that the University ends up with. Not sure why this would even be a discussion anymore.
  13. Thanks for the props on the logo...but I'd want no part of actually working on a logo for a group of people that didn't it changed in tne first place.  Anything that gets put out there will get some hate.

    :)

  14. It's all in good fun...i've only been following UND for a couple of years, so I have never actually cheered for the "Sioux". Although i don't agree with the reasons and the thought behind having to change the name, I am not nearly as invested in the "Fighting Sioux" brand as the majority of you all. I'm just hoping the end result isn't some silly cartoon looking bird with a grimmacing scowl and big muscle arms. I'm certainly not offended by sny responses here...I design corporate crap for a living and I know that you can never please everyone (especially when they don't want it in yhe first place). i'll still wear some old Sioux gear i picked up....and will probably get something with the new logo as well.
  15. I know they are not taking submissions for the new logo process . . . Anyway, I couldn't help but throw this together and put it out there. (And let the flogging begin)
  16. I'd agree . . . AP shouldn't have fumbled. Protect the ball!!
  17. The article pointed out something that I found kind of funny, and really didn't help the case . . . the "San Diego Chicken" isn't a team LOGO. Kind of NOT getting his point across. Most mascots are an image onto their own. The "logo" is more of the brand identity in 2d form. Nike has a swoosh logo, and Jordon is their mascot. The MN Vikings have the horn logo, and the Mascot is a cartoon'ish Viking character. Focus on a timless logo . . . and let everything else take care of itself.
  18. problem solved . . . best bird logo ever!!! is it a hawk? not sure. is it awesome? yes!! i'd love to see the football team lead out onto the field by a green Trans Am . . . with "East Bound and Down" pumping through the PA. (i'm joking . . . sort of)
  19. I get that they are just putting something out there to maybe cash in on some Christmas sales . . . but I wish they'd have waited for the actual brand development to be complete before putting anything in front of the public. (yes, i work in the marketing industry . . .)
  20. Close . . . but I'd flip the Cal Poly digits
  21. When I was going into 7th grade, our school merged with another school for sports (small towns). As bummed as I was about not getting to wear the same football uniform that I'd been cheering for the years before, I was just as excited to start fresh and have our class get to start our own heritage. I may be old, but I still understand what it feels like to get to start fresh with something that is your own . . . no matter the heritage. Not saying it's right or wrong, but I'm guessing there are some students who are excited to just move on and get their own identity now. The Sioux name won't be lost in the hallways, but it won't have any deep meaning to the new generations that were never part of it. true.
  22. Prairie Chickens . . . and it's totally PC!! (get it? Prairie Chickens) sorry
  23. You are totally correct. Off of "my" map . . . I can't really speak for everyone else, nor can I speak for a whole nation of people. I do know that there have been NO talks of changing the names of Sioux City, Sioux Falls, etc. In high school, I was taught pretty much NOTHING about Native American culture or history. The only knowledge I gained was through my own research. Usually came from seeing a unique name on a road sign . . . or maybe on a college t-shirt. And my answer is "yes" to your publicity question. I can't turn a corner without seeing a big add for a Casino that is some slapped together version of a native american name or term with "vegas" or something tagged onto it. So I'm having a hard time understanding why "sioux" can be used absolutely everywhere else without issue. And if it IS an issue, then I'm all for taking it off of EVERYTHING! Not racist . . . I would just like to see some cohesiveness across the board to all of this.
  24. well that just sounds silly
  25. That was my point more than anything. Maybe a white kid from Minnesota just doesn't understand all of this, but I know that I live in Sioux CIty, I have friends in Sioux Falls, and I liked cheering for the Sioux. What I am hearing is that the complaint did not arise from the Sioux Nation, but from someone's outside opinion saying that people "should be" offended . . . not that anyone actually "was" offended. I know that in my world, if all of those "sioux" references didn't exist, I wouldn't know a damn thing about what a "sioux" was. Let's be fair then, and take "sioux" out of all of the city names and business names, too. Replace them all with "hamster" and nobody will be offended. Actually, UND Hamsters is better than any of the nicknames that made the top five list.
