Sure they would put the date in the middle of hockey season. They also have like 30 days after that to announce a new nickname. *Keep in mind that this is only if we do not get the support of the two tribes in ND and there is something in the settlement about the resolution passed by the Spirit Lake Nation. I'm sorry, I read it fast and wasn't paying attention to all the big legal words that I don't understand in it. Quote

The name will be retired. Quote
Trunk Monkey Posted October 26, 2007 Posted October 26, 2007 I personally do like the "Force of the North" even though it was just a marketing slogan. I am fearful, however, that our Canadien friends would deem that hostile and abusive as they may see themselves as the actual "Force of the North". Quote

TheGreatSiouxNation Posted October 26, 2007 Posted October 26, 2007 People let's not jump to the negative and think about changing the nickname. We just would be able to host playoff games. Plus we will never host again for hockey and football and basketball are at least 5 years away. They can take away the nickname for the postseason but they cannot take it away for good unless we act like cowards and let them! I really think the Sioux Tribes are now the ones to focus on. It will be their decision and the complete country will be watching and judging. We must work with them to find a solution or the blame rests directly on two Tribal Governments. Wasn't it A Few Good Men where Jack Nickolas said "Sweet dreams son." The tribal govts. got what they wanted so I say good luck. Let's all just take some time before jumping to conclusions. Three years is a long time to find a solution. Quote

Goon Posted October 26, 2007 Posted October 26, 2007 I second that. I third that motion carried, I am not voting for him again. Period I will leave that part blank on my ballet next time I vote my straight ticket. Quote
andtheHomeoftheSIOUX!! Posted October 26, 2007 Posted October 26, 2007 I am angry about this! I do not ever want the name to change. Go Fighting Sioux! I am not impressed with anyone who decided that the settlement was a good idea. Quote

If you are not happy with your leader(s) vote them out of office, Its called representative democracy(sp) I am no longer voting for this AG, he has done nothing that deserves my vote again. I think there will probably be a few more that feel the same way as I do. I will make sure that I get the word out. Quote
BleedGrn Posted October 26, 2007 Posted October 26, 2007 I think this is probably the best he could do, given the dolts at the NCAA. I've seen arguments re: the courtship of certain tribal leaders. Personally, I'd like to see what it would take for the Tribes to support the name, whether it be scholarships, a required Indian history class, or whatnot. Whatever it takes to fully deserve to use the nickname above and beyond what the likes of FSU, etc. do, I think it would be worth it. There must be something the school can do so that the Tribes feel that they are truly being honored by the use of the name. I think that needs to be negotiated as soon as possible so that the University has an opportunity to prove to the Tribes that it is truly "worthy". P.S. Don't flame me. I'm a staunch supporter of the name, but I'm tired of the battle... Quote

petey23 Posted October 27, 2007 Posted October 27, 2007 The official new name will be The University of North Dakota Team formerly known as the Fighting Sioux. And just like this worked for the artist Prince, no one really cared and just went ahead and kept calling him Prince. But seriously, how did this get to the point where we went from having this lawsuit against the NCAA all but wrapped up to changing our name? Changing our name was never even a part of this? If anything they should have said it is a 8 year window because it really doesn't matter until then anyway? I don't think the alumni who contributed to this cause had this in mind? Someone needs to be held accountable. The worst case scenario was we lose the lawsuit(not likely, this go round anyway) and we can't host playoff games which wasn't going to matter for the next 5 years anyway? If this is Wayne's way of negotiating after spending a million dollars and having the case wrapped up, he might be the first republican I have voted against in quite some time. Pathetic. Quote
TheGreatSiouxNation Posted October 27, 2007 Posted October 27, 2007 I do have name we could adopt without any Tribal ok. We could use Williston State nickname as ours. "Tetons" would need no Tribal agreement. And we could use the logo since it is a French word for....Teats. We could also say we are the Grand Tetons like the park. Think of a new logo we could have! I personally would like to pick out the cheerleaders. In all seriousness why was there no uproar in Williston's nickname? This just shows why this whole debate is a fraud. I'm also still waiting for Ron His Horse Is Thunder to change the Standing Rock Sioux name. Quote

TheGreatSiouxNation Posted October 27, 2007 Posted October 27, 2007 Aren't those moutains? Tetons It is also the westermost sioux tribe. But it means many things but there is no recogized Teton Tribe within North Dakota. Easy pickings if you ask me. Quote
