Shawn-O
I think most of them do. Especially when you consider all of the SCIENTIFIC polling that has been done regarding the subject. The silent majority on the reservations need to step forward on this. And what exactly would induce them to do so NOW? I agree with you in principle, but if it ain't happened by now, it ain't happenin'.

Shawn-O
I think the Bennett Brien logo is as good as gone, by the way.
sioux7>5
I think the Bennett Brien logo is as good as gone, by the way. I think that they will keep that logo untill all this is decided. I think that if we gain tribal approval we will maybe commision a artist from one of the namesake tribes to design a new logo.

dagies
Boy, It is about time they get rid of their racist name. Sioux are people, not mascots.....waiting for the brilliant reply from a UND fan who will try to compare a dog, in the bulldogs, to a human being. No, we'd never try to compare you to a human. If the University cannot find an effective method of negotiation over the next three years they aren't being creative enough. Every group wants or needs something they don't currently have. Threatening to take things away generally is counter productive and not very clever.

dagies
Outside of the Fighting Irish, I can't think of any mascot that refers to the mascot in a negative way (i.e. "fighting"). Another things is that most of these names are either not a group of people that exist today OR they are not specific to one specific group of people... While I believe that most Sioux tribal members don't have anything against the Fighting Sioux logo, I am sure that there are some that are offended. Once a Viking or a "Battling Bishop" gets offended by a nickname then they should be included. You've got to be kidding me. Do you really want me to believe that "Fighting" is a negative reference? If you are trying to identify with the fighting spirit of a particular group, how else would you refer to it? Give me a break.
beersong
As others have pointed out, 3 years is plenty of time to buy the tribes support. Dig into those deep pockets.
Hawkster
This settlement is no good. I have no doubt that in the next three years someone from UND will find a way to hoodwink the Native American leaders into finding the name "acceptable". I'd put money on it. Let's face it, the name is racist and unacceptable in the modern age. Even if the Native Americans should decide to stand pat on their decision, it still leaves too many logos at the Ralph in place. Chang the name and let's move on.

bincitysioux
Due to the level of my blood-pressure, I will not comment nor read posts in this thread on this potential "settlement". However I will say now that if what the early reports on the radio are indicative of what the "settlement" may include, I am disappointed with the University, the State, and the Attourney General. darell1976
Why not we get permisson from one of the Chippewa tribes of ND and or Minn. then change the name to the Chippewas, and keep the logo....just a thought. I do know the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewas are for the Sioux nickname.
PCM
On one hand...it appears His Horse is Thunder is anticipating some resistance from within the tribe(s) to continue their current stance against the Fighting Sioux nickname. Otherwise...one would expect him to welcome the "burden" which in reality gives him and the tribal council the final "vote". On the other hand...maybe His Horse is Thunder is anticipating significant backlash against the tribes if they hold their ground which would be lessened if the decision came from the NDSBoHE. My thoughts exactly. His Horse is Thunder and Pearson should welcome this settlement with open arms if what's being reported is true. But he is strangely negative about it. There must be a reason for that. Time will tell. If this is the beginning of the end remember that negative comments and actions against Native Americans will only validate what some have been saying all along. I've said all along that if the only way we can retain the name is through threats and intimidation, then we should change it. Sadly, that is lost on some members of this board. darell1976
I say people should protest at every game or function UND hosts for the nickname if it was to be changed. People protest against the name why not we protest for the name. That makes for a news story.
The Sicatoka
His Horse is Thunder (Standing Rock) and Pearson (Spirit Lake) should be giving out shouts of joy if this is true. They've been handed the power if this is true. Isn't that what they really wanted? Yet, they seem hesitant, almost fearful, of the power of this rumored settlement. Why is that? I think they know that they are misaligned to the will of the peoples they "lead". Better yet, whatever decisions Spirit Lake and Standing Rock come to are simply self-imposed. They get to live with whatever they choose. Good for them: I hope they enjoy being the center of the firestorm for a while. UND will go on either way, with or without them. Stronger. I am sure enrollment of Indian students will decline because many of them choose UND because the name, now without the name i can see Indian programs cut back or cut out, and they should until they pay the same tuition as other students no free rides because of race. UND is not on the rez they don't have the name why should we cuddle to N.A. rather than the rest of the students. If UND was hostile and abusive wait til the change happends. I am afraid people are going to resent native americans both on the campus and at the reservations.
