Football Verbals

I am curious as to how UND decides to fund the FB team through the transition. I.E.--is a plan in place to fund schollies incrementally or is there funding available to get to 63 right away? I am mostly curious on this one as to how it might affect any future NDSU-UND scheduling. Most NDSU posters, myself included, would prefer to not play the Sioux until at least 2009 or whenever they qualify as a DI "counter" game, whichever comes first. If that's doable in 2008, so be it, but I have my reservations until I see differently. If anybody posting here has info as to what the scholarship ramp-up plan is for UND, it'd be nice to know. Or, at the least, make for good speculation. Does anybody know anything regarding this???

Here is an entire thread that discusses how UND will offer scholarships during the transition. As far as FB, UND will offer 57 schollies it's first year in DI then up to the full 63.

Oh yeah, I keep forgetting you're going to 57 next season. That makes sense then. They probably told a bunch of the kids that they'll get more money next year.

I should note that NDSU had quite the recruiting class in 2003 (the our exploritory year class).

Frick, Dahl, Walker, Dragosavich, Safe, Mays, were all in that class.

Per wisconsinpreps.com, UND has received a commitment from Cody Rose of Elmwood (WI). link. He's 6'4", 190 lbs. and Erik Lofdahl, who runs the site, calls him "one of the most highly-recruited athletes in the state." His father is an ex-NFL player.

a possible decommitment....?

Virtually no one at the D-2 level receives a full ride. There are only 36 scholarships available and teams are allowed to carry 85 players on scholarship. That averages out to 42% per scholarship. If you assume that the bulk of the money is invested in your starters and you assume each one of them receives approximately 2/3 of a scholarship, that leaves 21 scholarships to divide between 63 players. That averages out to be 1/3 of a scholarship per player. The problem for UND this year was trying to recruit D-1 players with D-2 money. However, the fact that next year there will be anywhere from 57-63 scholarships available means that the value of the scholarships will go up. 63 divided by 85 averages out to approximately 75% per scholarship. If you were to reward your starters with a full ride, the balance of the scholarships will be worth about 2/3. This will make it much easier to recruit and even this year enticed a few kids who were offered more by other D-2s.

There is no limit to the number of football student-athletes receiving financial aid in DII. The only limit is 36 equivalencies, split amongst however many. DI limits financial aid to 85 counters for both the FBS (85 grants) and FCS(63 equivalencies).

I've been told (by someone who should know) is that the initial plan* is to jump to 57 FB scholarships right away.

The "57" is 90% of 63 which startes the DI-A counter clock --> You have to average 90% of max for three years to count as a DI game if you play a DI-A.

Dig deep enough into UND's DI report and you can see it's in there, but you really have to scrub through the numbers.

* The corresponding womens scholarships to stay in Title IX complaince are also in that same plan.

Not quite three years- from the Good Book

In 2005 the signees brief listed 2 specialists, 6 skills, and 17 heavy recruits.

In 2004 the signees brief listed 1 specialists, 12 skills, and 8 heavy recruits.

In 2007 the verbals so far seem to be 2 specialists, 10 skills, and 11 heavy recruits.

Anyone know if The Ankenbauer kid from Texas had any ties to UND? Any relation to a coach in another program at UND?

If I am correct, I believe that UND stated that 2007 would be the exploratory year. This also means they are still playoff eligible for one final year before transition begins. How would they be able to fund 57 schollies in 2007 then? That wouldn't seem ethical of fair concerning the D2 teams they'd still be playing. Did I miss something during the NDSU transition? :D

*EDIT: never mind--a little research cleared this up for me so, again, nevermind

Unfortunate. In watching the video, attached to the link at Wisconsinpreps. he looks like a talented kid.

Is the Wisconsin kid definitely toast or is he just still debating? If he is gone what school is he switching too? I hate that when kids switch right at the end just before signing date. It's makes it very difficult for coaches who are counting on you to put a class together. Earlier in the recruiting process is easier to work around than at the last minute. Maybe the kid will change his mind and stick with his commitment.

On the other hand if he doesnt want to be here it could be more of problem latter.Theres another kid waiting to sign.

24 verbals now.

Are you sure you have enough money for Veldman if he comes up there?

I think only the coaches can answer that. Of course, I suppose the same question could be asked of NDSU. I had thought they were only going to sign 15 or 16, and they're over that now. Of course, a few of them, like the Stephen-Argyle kid, are probably getting very little scholarship money.

Coaches offer more kids than they have scholarships for.

It's the same principle used by admissions when they accept far more applications than the school could possibly have room for.

NDSU may also have a bit of a quandry with regard to the whole Walker Lee Ashley deal. According to Kolpack, he's going to visit sometime this week. I highly doubt NDSU still has two full scholarships available, so who knows how that will play out, or whether it will have any effect on the Veldman situation. Personally, I think Ashley is far more trouble than he's worth.
