Goon
The only acceptable name other than Sioux would be the Chiefs. Logo stays and name honors the Hanson Brothers. Everyone should be happy! <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I like it, also I like the Calvary too, I think it would be a great name and a thumb in the eyes off all the whinners that want the name changed. sprig
Okay, I admit it -- I'm a moron. "Flickertails" does not refer to prairie dogs -- too bad for them -- but instead refers to the thirteen-lined ground squirrel, also known as Richardson's ground squirrel. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Wrong again, but you're getting closer. dagies
It'll never happen. If it ever comes to a name change, we'll end up like Marquette with a monumentally diverse community made up or students, faculty, lawmakers, farmers, former North Dakotans, some tourists who drove thru the state once while on their way to Mount Rushmore in '78, etc. so we can come up with a politically correct nickname that offends no one like the most recent entries into pro sports have done: Tampa Bay Lightning Miami Heat Connecticut Sun Phoenix Mercury Toronto Raptors Houston Comets Detroit Shock Florida Panthers Tampa Bay Devil Rays (except this offended religious groups, so they shortened the name to just Rays to appease everyone) Minnesota Wild I can already see it: The University of North Dakota Northern Lights, The University of North Dakota Sun Dogs, The University of North Dakota Green Eagles, or even worse, we change the name to The University of North Dakota Green, only decide that that's stupid so we spend thousands of dollars in a survey and eventually decide to go back to Green Eagles. Proving why the best idea will be to do without a nickname for an extended period of time, and let the best option surface over time. I'd puke going to any of those choices. The Sicatoka
The Sicatoka and I are on it, John. Didn't I tell you we need to modify that pant leg stripe to look more like a sword in a sheath against the side of a leg? If using a group name as a mascot is "hostile and offensive" as some tell us, then removing "Sioux" and replacing it with the name of the greatest enemy of the Sioux should make the Sioux really happy because then we'd be "hostile and abusive" a Sioux enemy. Go Cavalry. (insert bugel call to "Charge!" here)

Apparently that is "non-hostile," "non-abusive," and a real source of pride for the Indian community.

ooteri
I'm new on this discussion board, so this may be redundant. Do you think it is a little hypocritic that the tribe who wants us to quit using their name has a school on their reservation that uses the Warrior nickname? And no, I don't think they are referring to Norsemen.

redwing77
Works for me. Didn't they kick the Sioux out of much of MN anyway? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> They kicked out most people they came into contact with. I believe they also kicked the Sioux out of most of Eastern ND and SD at one point. Here's a pretty good website about the Ojibwe people. I LOVE the name: Fighting Ojibwe. It really sounds cool. Yttrium- What does 'Ojibwe' mean in the Chippewa language? UND's school colors are Green, White, and "Prairie Rose (yuck)". In your opinion, should UND change their name to Ojibwe or Chippewa, would the school colors have to change too? If so, what would you think they'd change to that would be more symbolic towards the Ojibwe people?
dagies
Instead of a chant of "Let's Go Sioux!" we could go with "Go-Jib-Way!". I know, corny as heck. In fact, if they see that it'll probably kibosh the whole idea. I'm going home now....

PCM
Nevertheless, the Standing Rock Tribe has secured "service mark" protection for the term "prairie knights" when used in conjunction with casino services and entertainment in the nature of live musical performances. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Okay. We can't legally use that name. That's what I thought.

mikejm
Hey, if Lakota Sioux has been abandoned, why doesn't UND apply for the rights to the name? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> My thoughts exactly.
Ranger
dump the name. dump the special programs. move forward. continue to teach students irregardless of race, creed, religion, etc.. no special considerations... just simple merit-based education. why not? mikejm
Their web site may have a copyright or they may have trademarked the name "Prairie Knights Casino & Resort," but they can't copyright the name itself any more than the University of Michigan could prevent another school from calling itself "Wolverines." <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Actually, MM, they have registered "Prairie Knights" as a "service mark". That is essentially the same thing as a trademark, allowing them exclusive use of the term Prairie Knights as it refers to "casino services and entertainment in the nature of live musical performances". I suppose UND could attempt to register the term under a different goods and services classification, but I'm guessing the Standing Rock tribe might, ahem, object. No more special programs like Inmed that single out certain races for benefits while ignoring others in need with a different skin color. All programs should be based on individual qualifications, not ethnicity. I'm white and I am supposed to have all of these wonderful benefits because of it. I'm still waiting for the silver-spoon to show up in the mail. Sure, I have my college degree. But I earned that through my military service coupled with an ass-load of student loans that I am still paying off. Nothing was given to me..... then again, I didn't expect it either. I knew from an early age that hard work was the only road to success. Funny how that works. And I STILL say we should change the name to the Fightin' Honkies.
