NCAA Decision is in

I can think of a couple of things on the downside.  Time and money.  But hell you have to make a stand sometime.

Make it lucrative:

Include a slander suit for calling UND "hostile and abusive" when the US Office for Civil Rights says it found no such thing and the NCAA had that information.

Slander --> Damages.

How can't people realize that this is a prideful name. Last night I took my 3 year old son skating in Fargo... he had his "I love the Sioux this much" sweatshirt on... I had my Sioux pullover on. There was maybe 20 people between the kids & parents there, of that there was 9 people with Sioux apparrel on. You could just tell that everyone there was full of pride for the Fighting Sioux.

America better wakeup pretty soon or the PC crowd will take over everything it can get its hands on.

I don't think I've ever posted in the name forum, and I probably shouldn't now, but ...

I think I agree that, if the name ultimately is changed, economic retaliation would be appropriate.  For those that think it's childish, I would say that nearly all decisions are about money in the real world, and it's childish to think otherwise.

There would certainly not be a Native American casino in Grand Forks, and I would have the state sanction some limited gambling of a similar nature to compete directly with the existing casinos.

All those Native American programs at UND - gone, with the savings used to fund the logo change.

The medical school program - gone, along with the controversy.

With no University connection to Native American culture, I don't see any reason for special programs.  Harsh, but that's what I think.

I tend to agree with this. I see no reason to maintain those links to the tribes in the event the name is changed. Let 'em go to FSU or Utah.

Since all the tribes and NC$$ seem to understand is $$$, I see no reason to waste it on them.

You're right there LB...as a person stated a while back, America is becoming the land where the minority rules against the majority opinion.

I'm very tired of the Sioux name controversy. Sometimes I think it's time for all of us to just dust our feet off on this one and begin a new tradition. At other times, I want to fight like hell, just to rub their faces in it. But, if we end up doing something, I like using just plain old North Dakota with no nickname as was suggested by another on this board. Of course, I will always refer to them as the Fighting Sioux and so will everyone else. The NCAA can not take away our individual freedoms...

About the logos, we should just leave them. Hell, in 50 years, they will have historical significance as people try to figure out just what the hell a Sioux is...the soon to be forgotten tribe of the Dakotas...

Wait a minute?  Is the NCAA punishing UND because the Spirit Lake Tribe didn't answer them and clarify the resolution?

This isn't over.

No one should lay down and die because of the NCAA's decision today.

That's not the way this country came to be, and there is no reason not to try.

YOU HAVE NO CHANCE OF SUCCEEDING IF YOU DO NOT TRY.

I have yet to see a Fighting Sioux athletic team lay down and die.  There's no reason that people should say this is over.

ABSOLUTELY!

This is no time to capitulate just becuase the playground bully says something we don't like.

If we say this is over, we show that the convictions we have had throughout this issue are hollow.

When those who try to exert unwelcome power over us have determined that there is no longer an opportunity to talk, it comes time to stop trying to talk and defend what we believe in - NOW WE FIGHT!

The arguments are prepared, the lawyers are ready - I say cut 'em loose!

GO SIOUX!

I have always felt that this needed to go to court to finally settle it. If the NC$$ came back and granted us the exception due to the SL support then who's to say next year the support was recinded. Or on that note, in a few months the SL council realizes that they listened to much to the extremists and that in hind sight UND doesn't do anything "hostile and abusive" and really helps the NA. Would the NC$$ then give us an exemption? Would the "hostile and abusive" lable forever be linked to who has control of the tribe at any given time?

I know that you need to go through all of the appeal process first but it would not hurt my feelings at all if UND was in court at 9AM tomorrow morning filing the appropriate papers to get this thing going.

GO SIOUX!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

After I calmed down enough to type, it occured to me that the Fighting Sioux's next opponent in a major sport is SCSU this Saturday. I find it ironic that the next opponent is the one with the most vocal anti-Sioux contigent.

Anyway, long live the (UND) Sioux.

I don't know if this was answered before but does the Sioux nation want to be referred to Lakota/Nakota/Dakota? If so, why don't they change their name? Then UND wouldn't be hostile and abusive cause there would be no 'Sioux' tribes. I believe there were 3 or 4 tribes in Manitoba that changed their names.

Sorry for the last rant, I feel a little better.

I'll do a running recap.

Kupchella: We have no choice but to pursue the appeals process because of the words hostile and abusive. Not being honored doesn't contitute hostility and abuse.

How is it that some Indian nicknames are okay but Sioux crosses over to the area of hostility and abuse?

Dr. K: What UND does for Native Americans is a small part of what the NCAA is considering in its report. The schools that have been granted exemptions don't have anything like what UND has in the way of programs to educate Native Americans. We think we have a special relationship compared to many other universities.

Dr. K: UND will appeal to the NCAA Executive Committee, although it seems futile.

They did get it partly right by not requiring UND to cover the logos in REA for the west regional hockey tournament.

Reporter: How can UND claim to have a special relationship with the tribes when they're all against the name?

Dr. K: Some Native Americans are against it and some who work here are for it. The action here is what should matter. You simply can't dismiss the tradition here. We will continue to bring reconcilliation to the different points of view. We must continue to create the best possible environment here.

Dr. K: The middle ground here is to manage things in a way that's less offensive. We've tried mightily to do that. Every complaint that's been brought to me has been dealt with. If there are things we can do to make it less offensive, let's identify them and make them less offensive.
