Sioux Fan in Sioux Falls Posted September 11, 2010 Posted September 11, 2010 Planning on attending the Fighting Sioux vs. Fighting Iris Sat night game (11/27) and wondering if any of you out there find the moniker "Fighting Irish" offensive, or as the NCAA would term it "hostile and abusive"? Thinking that perhaps a public show of objection fo use of "Fighting Irish" name would garner the attention of the NCAA and/or media? Possibly via use of signs or t-shirts that show we are offended and find it hostile and abusive. What do you think? We have some ideas for t-shirts/signa I know some will view this as ND fans being sore losers re: our name change, however it is my belief that it should be an all or nothing approach for the NCAA. In other words, if this is truly what the NCAA's beliefs are, then NO teams should be given the privelege to use names that target specific cultures or nationalities. Anyway, just throwing this idea out. Please let me know if you plan to attend this particular game and if you would be interested in participating in our little "grassroots movement". If you don't want to post your interest publicly, feel free to send me a personal message. Thanks everyone! Quote
johnsowe Posted September 11, 2010 Posted September 11, 2010 It is a good idea but nobody will care Quote
johnsowe Posted September 11, 2010 Posted September 11, 2010 I mean not the powers to be or the hippies care. Quote

dakotadan Posted September 12, 2010 Posted September 12, 2010 It would be fun if there were t-shirts made up. I would buy one. Or maybe signs/t-shirts that read "The Real UND Plays Here!" or "The Real ND is North Dakota". Quote
ScottM Posted September 12, 2010 Posted September 12, 2010 Nice, but tired try. Nobody, including the NC$$, will ever tell the Golden Domers their name is "abusive" or "hostile" and get the same treatment UND received. Quote

I agree with Scott, the NCAA doesn't the intestinal fortitude to mess with the Golden Domers because they only like to bully small schools. Quote
InHeavenThereIsNoBeer Posted September 12, 2010 Posted September 12, 2010 I really like this idea. I would rather not let our name go quietly. Quote

redwing77 Posted September 13, 2010 Posted September 13, 2010 unless of course their leading athletics donor starts celebrating Hitler's b-day. No. The only way the NC double nickel ever cracks down on the Fighting Irish is if they start losing money hand over fist. Even with the bad seasons they've had, they're still a very marketable team. Money talks to the NCAA. Just like if UND was FBS in football (playing in a BCS Autobid conference) and brought the same or similar kind of income for the NCAA as FSU, CMU, or Notre Dame, I doubt we'd be having this discussion. sioux7 Posted September 13, 2010 Posted September 13, 2010 Lets face it the NCAA, next to our very own US Congress is the most corrupt organization on the face of the Earth. When that pile Miles Brand was alive he and the NCAA had only one thing on their mind......to make an example of a small university to show they have some sort of power. The NCAA is joke and they know it. 1 Quote
