All-WCHA Teams 2008-09 Edition

The MVP thread got me to thinking about this year's All-WCHA Teams. The media/coaches (?) select three teams and an All-Rookie team. With two games left to play, who do you all think is deserving this year?

Here's mine to get the ball rolling, with the caveat that if someone steps up or falls down this weekend, I can amend this on Sunday. All my stats are WCHA games only, since that is the criteria used.

First Team

G - Stalock, UMD: 2.27gaa, .921%, 15-10-8

D - Testwuide, DU: 3-10-13, +15

D - Genoway, UND: 1-16-17, +2

F - Duncan, UND: 13-14-27, +8, 3 GWG

F - Lasch, SCSU: 15-13-28, E, 4 GWG

F - Stoa, UM: 16-17-33, +7

Second Team

G - Eidsness, UND: 2.38 gaa, .909%, 16-4-4

D - McBain, UW: 6-22-28, -9

D - Raboin, SCSU: 7-17-27, +13, 2 GWG

F - Schroeder, UM: 11-22-33, +8, 2 GWG

F - Rau, CC: 12-15-27, +1

F - Rakhshani, DU: 11-15-26, +4

Third Team

G - Cheverie, DU: 2.47 gaa, .916%, 16-8-3

D - Wiercioch, DU: 8-18-26, +6

D - Marto, UND: 6-7-13, +12

F - Sharp, UMD: 11-13-24, -2

F - Maiani, DU: 8-21-29, +6

F - Mouillierat, MSU-M: 14-11-25, -3, 2 GWG

All Rookie Team

G - Eidsness, UND: 2.38, .909%, 16-4-4

D - Wiercioch, DU: 8-18-26, +6

D - Leinweber, AA: 2-10-12, -3

F - Schroeder, UM: 11-22-33, +8, 2 GWG

F - Gregoire, UND: 10-10-20, +4, 3 GWG

F - Colborne, DU: 8-14-22, +4

MVP = Lasch, SCSU: only player in the league with 4 game winners.

ROY = Eidsness, UND

I think both MVP and ROY can be won or lost yet this weekend.

I know McBain is an offensive machine, but he's a -9 (and he does not play for Tech or AA), so couldn't justify a First Team for him. I think someone like Roe, Gorowsky, Fairchild, Gregoire or Vandy could slip in the third team with a strong weekend. Same goes for Guentzel or Connolly on rookie team.

Gregoire is 10-10-20 and Hextall is 9-10-19. Either one could have more points after the next few weekends. But I would say Gregoire gets the nod for the rookie team, regardless, just because everyone seems to hate Hextall. Well, everyone except us, of course :silly:

i like these, schroeder or eidsness will win roy

its so tough with forwards, i see walsky a 2nd teamer but then who do you take off? tough choices. i see duncan as a 2nd team forward as well with how it shakes out. you could flip flop some 1st team and 2nd team forwards and not go wrong. im guessing all votes are in for these awards with only 2 games left for most.

First Team

G-Alex Stalock-UMD

D-J.P Testwuide-DU

D-Either Garrett Raboin SCSU or Kurt Davis MSUM

F-Ryan Lasch-SCSU

F-Ryan Stoa-UM

F-My heart says Ryan Duncan-UND, but my brain says Chad Rau-CC or Garret Roe-SCSU

Tie breaker goes to Rau people just seem to like him more and hes a senior.

Second Team

G-Mark Cheverie-DU

D-Chay Genoway-UND

D-Either Garrett Raboin SCSU or Kurt Davis who ever doesnt make first team.

F-Schroeder-UM

F-Garret Roe-SCSU

F-Ryan Duncan-UND

Third Team

G-Brad Eidsness-UND

D-Jaime McBain-UW

D-Patrick Wiercioch-DU

F-Eric Walsky-CC

F-Chris VandeVelde-UND

F-Paul Crowder-UAA

POY-Ryan Lasch numbers dont lie, team brings him down though.

ROY-I want to say its gonna be Eidness, bu you know its probably gonna be Jordan Schroeder.

In review its hard to imagine UND not having a first team player but since theres no "SuperStar" on the team its very possible. I really dont see Chad Rau making first team but the alternate is Garrett Roe and i dont see both him and Lasch and possibly Raboin making first team. Eidness has had the better season than Cheverie but, I think he gets the nod cause everyone still thinks that DU is better UND. I thnk VV strong play down the stretch sneaks him in but could also see Rahkshani in place of either him or Crowder.

Please give opinions

Roe, Mouillierat, and Rakhshani all could easily be there, but Fontaine is the third leading scorer, so hard to leave him off, and Sharp is a gamer.

I'm thinking some Gophers could move up after this weekend against the defensively challenged Michigan Tech...

I'll post my teams tomorrow night or Sunday.

A few guys are obviously locks, but I'd like to wait on a few others.

As for the ROY debate, Eidsness has been very good and exceeded expectations of most I would think, but that truly is Schroeder's to lose. Maybe a 1 goal weekend by Eidsness would push him over the top, but what do I know, he might already be the favorite...The homer in me says Schroeder no matter what, but only time will tell.

Good luck to both this week

D - Wiercioch, DU: 8-18-26, +6

Still think he has a good shot at ROY. Top defenseman on one of the league's two best teams, top PP unit, top PK. Not easy to do as a freshman at that position. I hope he has an aggressive advisor who sees that he's nearly ready for the big league.

I would have Hextall on the Rookie Team ahead of a couple of those forwards. He excels at every aspect of the game scores big goals and is a born leader.

OK, here's my updates. After the weekend, I would switch Genoway and Raboin around, moving Raboin to the First Team. I would delete Leinweber and Gregoire from the Rookie Team, replaced by Guentzel (CC) on D (2-11-13, +4) and Stepan (UW) as a Forward (6-17-23, +4). Leave the rest, though Stalock was unimpressive this weekend, wasn't he.

Same here. I think he would do fine at the next level already. He is quite an impressive dman, and being a freshman to boot.

Eaves really screwed up on that one...

This is kind of like the year that Kessel was the pre-selected ROY before the season even played out, I think there was a good argument that Oshie was just as deserving of the ROY as well. I think this season it already been pre-determined that Schroder is the ROY. Tim Hennesy has touched on this in the Coaches show this past week.

I think personally Brad Eidsness should be based on his play and contribution to the Sioux finishing first over all in the league. I also THink Wiercioch is very deserving as well. The guy is 22-9-4 and is responsible for holding UND in number of games that the Sioux could have lost.

Schroeder was 1 point off the scoring title and was probably the main reason that Stoa won it. What else would you want?

Your team limped into 5th place and the Sioux won the league title. Big difference.

Eids backboned this team to a league title what does finishing second in the scoring race get you? 5th place

Siouxweet what you said makes the difference IMHO. First place Fifth place big difference.

In terms of rookie of the year voting, not a big difference at all.

Gopher BIAS.

I have bias as well. Eidsness should be the rookie of the year because without Eidsness, I'm pretty sure the Sioux would have finished in 9th place. Instead, we finished on top and he finished 2nd in the goaltending race by .0002.

That is a strong argument because there were a lot of people saying that UND weakness was goaltending as well and

Brad Eidsness proved them wrong.

not sure if its even possible but i would say they are co-rookie of year. both had great freshman seasons. eidsness led a team to a league title. he should get it. schroeder is a hell of a player and was very good as well and i would say this if the 2 players were on the opposing teams but think BE earned it

How does Schroeder compare to Okposo (freshman year) now that most of Schroeder's freshman year is over?

From a scoring standpoint:

Okposo 12-18--30 in league games

named to the All-WCHA Second Team and WCHA All-Rookie Team

ranked third in the WCHA and seventh in the nation in freshman scoring; and second in the WCHA and seventh in the nation in points per game among freshmen (1.00)

Schroeder 11-24--35 in league games

First in the WCHA in Freshman scoring, 2nd in the WCHA in scoring.
