  1. Anyone hear or seen if UND is on 6'7 Cole Dahl from Northern Freeze. I think that is Karlstad,MN area which is right in UNDs backyard. Heard most of the NSIC as well as NDSU and USD is on him but didn't hear UND. Below is a highlight of him winning a AAU dunk contest. Seems like a pretty good athlete and at 6'7 and right in UNDs backyard I would hope we are at least talking to the young man and getting him to camp to evaluate. We shouldn't be letting Craig Smith recruit kids 70 miles from our campus better than we do. Not saying that is happening, but I have seen USD showing up on a lot of interest list with local kids.
  2. I wouldn't call myself a Jones supporter, I am not calling for his job like others but I think I am pretty neutral about the whole thing. Fair enough to say when there is something I don't like and fair enough to say when there is something good happening. Having said that I agree with you that until these recruits get into a college program you don't know. I will also say I have seen enough basketball in the area to say that the class he is bringing in with Seales, McDermott, Collins, and Bernstein is his best class on paper. If the staff is able to land Baker and McKinley it turns an already great class to an even better one. Toss Crandall into that who redshirted and it is some serious talent on paper. Since we are comparing FB recruits I will add that Wheeler Baker is more accomplished than any FB transfer the program has brought in (6 a game as a true fr on a 14 seed team in the NCAAs) and people tend to get excited about guys like Tillman, Arrington, Hinojosa, Bredan Hanson, etc. I see no problem with fans being excited about bringing in a proven guy like that with 3 years to play and from the Twin Cities to boot. Again, recruiting is a crapshoot, but on paper this is Jones' best class and if they add two more big pieces like Baker and McKinley i think fans have a reason to be excited about the young talent on the roster because there will be a lot of it. Let people be excited and see how it plays out.
  3. All hypothetical at this point. These are two potential recruits that might come to UND. Mckinly is a high school kid so i wouldn't even consider him a transfer and Baker would have 3 years left to play. Both are really good pickups if they happen, not even a question. As for next years roster i'll wait to reserve judgement until everything shakes out, but if that is the roster in 2 years UND will be in the running for a league title and Hooker would be the only Sr, so you'd have to like the potential for the years following too. We'll just have to see how it turns out.
  4. If he came here before signing the LOI i would've thought he should redshirt so it works out perfect anyways. He can come redshirt next year then have 4 years to play.
  5. With that type of talent the future would be bright. the 16-17 roster would be this assuming none of next years FR redshirt. Sr. - Hooker, Blake Jr. - Shanks, Cashman Bernstein Soph - Crandall, Seales, Baker, Collins, McDermott, Richman Fr. Mckinley That is some serious talent, and we would still have 2-3 scholarships left for other players.
  6. Very interesting, and a very nice player with great upside. Had 5-6 D1 offers previously. I have no idea if this would be true, but do you think he and Wheeler Baker are close friends? Seems strange he gets out of his LOI at Albany the same week Baker announces he is transfering....Package deal maybe? I would expect UND to go after him hard regardless of his connection to Baker. Being he signed his LOI I think he would have to sit out the year, but it would just be like he was redshirting anyways. If the staff brings in McKinley and Baker along with the 4 recruits already signed it will be by far the most talent coming into the program in one year ever. Our roster would also be loaded with talented well known Twin Cities kids which will only help us recruit more in future years. Neither Baker or McKinley help next year, but that 2016-2017 roster would be absolutely loaded, and the talent for the years after would be as well. Let's hope the staff can seal the deal.
  7. Really? This is from 2 years ago. http://blogs.citypages.com/blotter/2012/02/umd_hockey_fans_smallpox_blankets_chant_university_of_north_dakota_fighting_sioux.php Keep taking your Fighting Sioux Forever medication though, whatever helps you sleep better.
  8. This is moronic. Deadspin will be all over this....would be an epic failure. Here is who should vote. UND Alumni UND Current Students UND Donors UND Champions Club Members UND Season Ticket Holders if you aren't on that list and want to vote join the champions club or purchase season tickets.Even if you open it up to people of the state you are going to get NDSU fans that would sabbatoge it. The committee needs to address that issue before it gets to a vote.........that is a serious problem.
  9. Haven't been to BBall or Football then either I suppose. It is virtually non exsistant at those games. Goes back to what Siouxperfan 7 said Fighting Sioux Forever = hockey only fans. I tend to think fans that attend all sports get that moving on is what is best for the school. Also NDSU has gotten attention because of their success, but they have capitalized on that by increasing their brand of not only NDSU but Bison. They had an entire Tom Renoldi ESPN segment about the name Bison. That doesn't happen without them having a nickname.
  10. Here is a prime example of the fan you reference. Complete moron......If Lowell Schweigert isn't good enough for the nickname committee you have no clue. I would agree fans that think like this are holding UND back and that is why doing what is best for UND is the right thing to do and that is choosing a new nickname. I think no nickname would win in a vote by a landslide, but that is not what is right for UND and that is who I cheer for not the Fighting Sioux. http://www.grandforksherald.com/opinion/letters/3714076-letter-nickname-committee-doesnt-impress-longtime-fan
  11. Here is a list of schools (most bigger and bigger followings) than UND that have changed their nickname for this very reason. Stanford University – Indians to Cardinal (1972) Eastern Michigan – Hurons to Eagles (1991) St. John's (N.Y.) – Redman to Red Storm (1994) Marquette – Warriors to Golden Eagles (1994 Miami (Ohio) – Redskins to RedHawks (1997) Louisiana-Monroe – Indiana to Warhawks (2006) Arkansas State – Indians to Red Wolves (2008) If some of these schools can do it UND will be just fine. I would prefer UND go nameless as well, but long term that isn't what is best for the school. People move on, and so will UND fans. 50 years from now the only people who will remember Fighting Sioux are the people 20 and older and they'll be in their 70s or older. Let's not drag this out anymore, get a good nickname with a cool logo design and start moving on.
  12. That was my initial thought, but all other players who would fit that criteria (Ratelle, Idowu, Anderson) are listed as Seniors. It looked liked everyone was listed based on what their playing year would be next fall so that is why I thought Jawon might have 2 years of eligibility instead of just one. That would be great if true. It could just be a misprint that is why I asked, as I figured someone would know.
  13. Is Arrington only a JR? I thought he was a Tillman type deal with only one year? Fantastic if he is only a JR. I was looking at the spring depth chart and Bubba is really starting to stockpile a lot of young talent, ecspecially on the OL, DL and LB positions. Exciting times ahead for Bubba Ball.
  14. Big guys usually take a little longer to develop. What I look for is what type of skill set do they have. While Shanks struggled at times this year he has the skill set to be a big time player if he develops. The 7 footer can shoot the 3, has a mid range game, and has a nice little back to the basket game. If he adds strength and works hard on his game he could be a big time player.
  15. Jake Wright is a great player as well..... Being SDSU recruited Baker out of HS and Ian Theisen was there was the reason I figured they would be going after him hard. It will be interesting to see where he lands. I think he's all conference caliber in either the Big Sky or Summit. I don't see how Seales would hurt Baker's recruitment? If anything it should help being he'd be playing with high end talent. UND runs an offense where you can easily play 3 guards at once. Crandall is more of a true PG, Baker is kind of a combo PG/SG, Seales can play the 1 2 or 3, and McDemott looks like a 2-3 kind of player from what i have seen. Seems like a good combo.
  16. I wouldn't say these people don't donate, because you have to to own hockey tickets but I sort of agree with you that they aren't true UND fans.......kind of like I said before, they are front running bandwagon fans. Those same fans help $$$ come into UNDs athletic department though so they are needed.
  17. You just validated my point. You said you support any ND school and my question was do you really, or are you a UND Hockey - NDSU football fan? You stating you could care less about basketball and would rather cheer for NDSU football than UND football kind of indirectly answers the question. I'm not saying it is wrong, I'm just saying I wouldn't consider you a fan of "all ND schools," just a fan of UND Hockey and NDSU Football. If you would've said I cheer for NDSU in everything, but I like UND hockey I'd consider you more of a fan of both schools but let's call it what it is when you really only cheer for UND Hockey and NDSU Football.
  18. Kind of what I was getting at. If you say you support both schools but only cheer for UND Hockey and NDSU football then I would consider you a front running bandwagon ND college sports fan, not a fan of both schools. Not saying it is wrong just calling it what it is.
  19. Just curious. Who do you plan on cheering for when UND and NDSU play in football next year? Who do you cheer for when the teams play in hoops? If they were in the same conference who would you rather see win Conference Championships? Gotta have a preference I would think?
  20. I said it earlier, if he comes here, he is a potential multi year all conference caliber player. He is a proven product....6 a game for a 14 seed team in the NCAA as a true frosh. He can add strength and work on his game for a year and then step right in and contribute. Also take a look at the Recruiting pages for FB and BB and look at all the Twin Cities kids. Big time impression it makes on potential twin cities recruits when they see Quinton Hooker, Carson Shanks, Geno Crandall, Josh Collins, and potentially Wheeler Baker on the roster. Obivously mbb, but imagine Bubba talking to a recruit and showing him all the Twin Cities kids on the FB roster then pulling out the MBB roster and showing him all of the Twin Cities student athletes on the MBB rosters. Twin Cities FB recruits know who Hooker, Shanks, Crandall, Collins, and Wheeler Baker are. It only helps attract more high caliber student athletes from their.
  21. I'm hopeful in getting Baker and hope niouxsioux knows something we all don't, but I have a feeling USD and SDSU are also courting Baker hard.
  22. I was basing that off the fact that hasn't been confirmed by anyone yet. I would agree if that turns out to be true. Point was not all transfers are bad and that UND fans should be really excited if we end up with Wheeler Baker. I agree UND needs to recruit more 4 year kids, but Baker would redshirt next year and have 3 years after that much like Shanks. Those guys are basically HS recruits and I don't have a problem with that, ecspecially when they are TC kids. IMO the more high profile players from the Twin Cities the better. I think it actually helps FB & WBB recruit in the Twin Cities too.
  23. That would be fantastic if you knew something we all didn't and he will be here. I also agree that some fans need to stop thinking "all" transfers are bad. I agree UND has took to many in recent years, but ones like Shanks, Tyler, Nash, and Baker that spend 3 years in the program can be good transfers. SDSU almost went to the NCAAs this year and they had 3 transfers in their starting 5. I don't like it but there are transfers all over the country, just have to recruit more HS kids and then sprinkle in the right transfers. Next years FR class is a step in the right direction. As for Wheeler Baker. The young man averaged around 6 a game as a true freshman on a 14 seed in the NCAA tournament. He is a Twin Cities kid that is friends with the other TC kids on the team and will no doubt help us get more Twin Cities kids in the 16 & 17 classes. I'd take him over almost any HS recruit the staff could find at this point. Baker is a potential mutli year all conference Big Sky level player, and someone UND fans should be extremely happy about if he ends up coming here. Here's a nice dunk he had at albany this year.
  24. I think Hooker and Baker did play AAU together for Pulley. Could be wrong but pretty sure they did. Osseo and PC are right by each other, both probably grew up playing together and guessing know each other well. Good sign that he is friends with a lot of the current players and it looks like him and Grabowski just started following each other on Twitter. Not a twitter expert by any means so take that for what its worth. Like I said, he would be a big time pick up.
  25. Might be better in the recruiting thread since he would be a recruit. Staff should be all over that one. Realize everyone doesn't like the amount of transfers the staff has brought in the last few years, but I have no problem with them bringing in Twin Cities kids like Shanks, Tyler, and a guy like Wheeler Baker with multiple years left to suit up for UND. He would've been a big recruit out of HS and would be big now with 3 years left to play for UND. Assuming Seales doesn't redshirt he would be in the same class as him and Crandall. That would be an awesome backcourt for 3 years. My guess is the other Dakota schools will be after him. Kid is a pure scorer and a really good shooter. Guessing he knows all the Twin Cities kids well so hopefully that helps.
