  1. Nebraska has beach volleyball, uses the same HC, never plays a home game ever, and travels to Arizona and Hawaii for extended trips. The Cornhuskers get three extra scholarships from the deal, giving them more depth on the court roster. Understanding that there is some major differences in the games, but it still creates depth and experience. Sac St has remarked that beach energized their court game, as they were a sleeping program for a few seasons. Beach may help the court game, especially with depth and experience, as Nebraska and Sac St show. It may be that a school has to have a beach team just to stay competive in court.
  2. Don't know of a list. Generally, FCS schools have to offer 90% of 63 in order to count for as an opponent of an FBS team. Most conference teams will be at least 57 for that reason. Some conferences don't give any schollies, like the Pioneer, but they give need based aid. The Patriot has been changing it's policies, but generally they give aid disguised as scholarships. So does the Ivy. The Northeast conference gives scholarships, but DII level (36), as those schools want to stay DI without the cost. Quite likely the MEAC and SWAC have teams in financial difficulty that don't give 57, but then they would have to drop FBS games.
  3. Dorn also axed the former volleyball coach because he was male, and put in one of her favorite females, causing that program to hit the skids too. The sexual politics of bisonville is something to behold.
  4. Rare Earth's is a very tricky business. The Chinese have most of the mines and supplies, but they periodically dump prices, causing worldwide calamity to other countries mines. A US company, Molycorp, declared bankruptcy just this year, after investing billions in rare earths. There are some seams of potassium under the Bakken too under Crosby and Columbus that can be mined with water injection. But Saskatchewan has strip mines of potassium very near the surface, giving rise to some major fertilizer companies there, like Mosaic.
  5. Every school in the Slummit wants to leave, so it's hardly a pipe dream. Get an NDSU or SDSU fan on the talk of MVC, and it's sign us up now! If two schools leave, the Slummit is dead.
  6. Neither does ORal Roberts or UTArlington. The issue is the MVC private schools would like to keep the same relative voting %, so every new football school will get a non-football school. That is how the Big East used to operate when they had to balance FB and BB
  7. ESPN gets about 2.5 times the viewers than the deuce. Some TV'show like in bars and restaurants are always on ESPN, but never on the deuce except for requests.
  8. Charleston Southern, used to be Baptist College
  9. If the MVC wants NMSU, an appropriate basketball school for the MVC, it would be best if Denver and Oral Roberts and at least one Texas school was added, regardless of if they go FBS. Losing Denver and ORU would be fatal to the Slummit. Most of the Slummit can find landing spots, but W Ill may not have arranged anything. Doubt they would go DII, but the uncertainty would cause any good coach to bail.
  10. The NCAA and MAC haven't attempted to kick them out of FBS. Once a school is FBS, they don't mess with your subdivision. So Ind St has worse support then E Mich, Not. E Mic is just lucky as the MAC wanted 10 teams in the 70s. E Mich just happened to be there, in DII. The MVC will need at least eight FCS teams to go FBS as a conference. Ind St just happens to be there in the MVC already. If Drake wants to go FBS again, the MVC would give them a shot, just like Villanova looked into FBS with the Big East. Doubt it happens with Drake, unless someone is foolish enough to give major bucks.
  11. I would bet that an FBS Big Sky would mandate beach volleyball. Montana and MSU need women's sports for FBS and the Calif schools already have it. The court game would have 3 more schollies and more overall playing and practice time. The Montana schools would still need more female athletes, but MSU could start women's lax and play in the MPSF.
  12. Thats largely because Mido doesn't reach the Cities. With FSN, the potential advertisers are much broader: like Excel Energy. the North Dakota Oil Can, medical insurers, restaurant and store chains, etc.
  13. The volleyball telecasts on FSN were very professional. Would NDSU sign up with Midcontinent then? The Midcontinent build out is almost complete in Fargo. Getting on cable throughout Minnesota would be enormously beneficial for enrollment and alumni.
  14. FoxSports North?
  15. Ball St is FBS and Muncie is not much better than Terre Haute. Ind St has more support than E Michigan, and E Mich hasn't been turned out of the MAC yet. If the MVC and Wichita want to go FBS, there will take a couple of teams from Texas to enlarge their recruiting population for students and athletes. NDSU simply doesn't do crap for them. Wichita St has a lot of the same academic attributes as UND, namely aviation and entrepreneurial studies. The Koch brothers have pumped a lot of money into Wichita St and they will probably bankroll football too. Wichita St needs more programs in the MVC that are south (Lamar, Sam Houston, Incarnate Word, ORU, UTArlington, UALR will have to do) or west (like Denver, and NMSU), just like UND has a broad footprint west.
  16. Indiana St has much more developed football revenue and more potential than La-Monroe, which has the smallest enrollment for a public FBS school. Indiana State will do whatever it takes to stay in the MVC. If it means they have to put up end zone portable bleachers for a time, it will be done. We know it hurts bizon pride to be a non-valued member of the future MVC. Learn to deal with it now. Wichita St gets who and what they want in that conference, and they don't want to no bizon or anything Dakota.
  17. You mommy didn't allow you to stay up late then. Look it up.
  18. 8 -10,00 wold be the rule if UND had decent teams, especially on a weekend night. That's what DII days would bring to the Ralph.
  19. Fans today have to have video boards boards, as they want to be entertained as much or more than watching a game. Hockey has not falling attendance, because of winning and the Ralph experience. Agree, fans would go to the Ralph for basketball more than the Betty.
  20. Somewhere in this forum I stated that schools that start beach volleyball get six more scholarships. That's only true if they don't have court volleyball. Starting a beach team in addition to a court team gains a volleyball program three more scholarrships. Sac St has been coming on in large part because of those scholarships and because California players often like the option of playing both. Still think UND will have to offer both if they want to stay competitive in conference.
  21. Moorhead has $435k in expenses for its men's basketball team. The vast majority of that is coaches salaries and scholarships. If Montana St is spending $1.5 m per year on men's basketball, they certainly haven't had a dimes worth of return.
  22. So pleased that Walthall hasn't moved on to a better job yet. Imagine what he could do with UND's budget? Moorhead's athletics are a poor cousin compared to Mankato, Duluth, and St Cloud.
  23. Totally false. FBS used to allow moveups by independents a little over ten years ago. Troy moved up as an independent and the Sun Belt didn't want them, but Troy performed admirably and had the owners of the Blockbuester-like chain Movie Gallery backing them. The Sun Belt ended up taking Troy out of necessity. The Sun Belt was not even an FBS league much more than 15 years ago. Independents FBS teams like La Tech, La-La, N Texas, MTSU, Ark St and others decided they needed bowls and a regular conference to make their FBS teams viable. So the Sun Belt petitioned the NCAA to become an FBS conference then, and the NCAA granted their request. The FBS moveup rules have been changed so many time it would make your little brain spin like a top. It was changed because the power teams didn't want more FBS teams. Now the P5 doesn't care about FBS entry, as they control P5 entry, so they will relax the rules diluting the G5, so no G5 conference gets too powerful and threatens them. Otherwise Liberty will sue for entry, forcing a change anyway. The NCAA often changes their rules under a threat of a lawsuit (Indian nicknames is an exception).
  24. Virginia Beach has approved building a private arena that will accommodate an NHL or NBA team. The Norfolk / Tidewater area is one of the three biggest metros without a pro team. The others being Las Vegas and Austin.
  25. Was kind of worried that Jones would pull it out in the end, but he choked through it. A win over NDSU may have been too much to fire him. Feel bad for our guys that they don't have a leader that will show them how to work as a team.
