  1. What's next? Car dealerships charging for test drives?
  2. Which principle is that? It's not like the applicants were simply not selected...there was no selection at all. Giving back the money was the only proper thing to do.
  3. I'm guessing that there weren't photos of campus co-eds on the ballot.
  4. Yet, to anyone without this particular axe to grind, this piece does indeed present a cogent, campus-neutral critique of the critics of higher ed.
  5. You and others seem to have a serious hang-up (bordering on inferiority complex) about UND. I count exactly 3 paragraphs (out of 21!) that have remotely anything to do with Grand Forks.
  6. I would encourage you to read beyond the petty swipe at UND and look at the bigger picture. One need not take sides in UND vs NDSU when the issue in question is The World vs Higher Ed in ND.
  7. But the attacks are tired and the attackers predictable. At some point, the only response to constant complainers is to hand them a mirror.
  8. I don't exactly care for McFeely, but he hits the nail on the head here. http://www.grandforksherald.com/news/4105788-mcfeely-stop-me-if-youve-heard-one
  9. The only thing I'm emotionally invested in is trying to have a thoughtful, reasoned discussion on this topic, which the mouth-breathers on this site are completely incapable of doing.
  10. If it's so common, find me something -- anything -- to back up your claim. I'll wait.
  11. You call me out for spewing "garbage" but you clearly don't disagree. I plainly asked for evidence that our MBB coaches are underpaid. You and Csonked seem to have some, although I don't quite know where your 'half of our peers' comes from. OP had NOTHING but an apparent beef against women's hockey and complete ignorance about the cost of doing business. Is it too much to ask for people to support their opinions with at least some form of evidence or rational thought? This whole tirade of 'WH must be cut because I just saw a budget figure and it costs more than MBB' is a joke and speaks poorly to one's intelligence.
  12. You can read whatever you want into it, but I would direct your attention to the word "non-constructive." I, for one, am intrigued by the level of sustained bitterness, and I want to know if and for how long people intend to keep throwing a tantrum and lowering themselves to profanity and infantilism. What you call a complaint, I call fascination.
  13. You'll note that I did not advocate for keeping any coach or assistant. But you damn well cannot ignore the market when it comes time to hire their replacements. And to anyone who thinks that aggregate MBB coaching salaries need to exceed aggregate WH coaching salaries "just because," you'll need to come up with something better to persuade people who are willing to look beyond the blood lust and rhetoric and who are cognizant of life in the real world.
  14. Because Faison controls the market, right? Do you have any idea how economics works? Supply and demand? There are >300 D1 men's basketball programs cranking out well over 1000 grads per year, all of whom are presumably qualified to be a paid (admittedly, lowly) assistant at a D1 school. Not to mention thousands upon thousands of lower division players. That's a new crop of hungry-for-experience coaching meat IN ADDITION TO the existing pool of candidates, every year. Does anyone believe that the competition for college hockey coaches - particularly on the women's side - even approaches that level? Moreover, your selected data without reference to market factors such as league/regional averages, years of experience, etc. is completely meaningless. This is at least the second post criticizing BF because the total line item budget for (poster's less preferred sport) is higher than the total line item budget for (poster's more preferred sport), oblivious to the simple and obvious fact that some sports just cost more to play. When did sports fans become such socialists? If you want to say that the MBB assistants are underpaid, fine. We can gather some data and have that discussion. But don't lazily shovel that crap on the WH program with nothing to back it up.

  16. Wow. Think about that for a second. And then remember why we're all here. Pulling the welcome mat from future generations and showing current participants the door are not exactly what #myUND is all about. Which is precisely why killing programs should not be taken lightly or dismissed with a cavalier attitude. A student athlete who pours their heart, soul, blood, sweat, and tears into the University of North Dakota deserves so much more, especially when nobody shows up to watch. Who are any of us to place a value on their experience?
  17. Neither of the A's in NCAA stands for attendance. I would like to hear from student athletes who came up through non-revenue, non-spectator-other-than-parents-and-friends sports to see if any of the NCAA's stated ideals have merit. Either college sports are a good philosophical idea AT THEIR CORE--and thus deserving of funding and investment--or they aren't. An empty arena is irrelevant IF the student athletes are being fulfilled through education, character, integrity, personal growth, development, etc. A lot of views expressed on this subject focus more on the entertainment value to the individual, and not on the bigger picture.
  18. How, exactly, does one be "excessively compliant" with the law? I guess the only alternatives are minimally compliant (i.e., at-risk) and non-compliant. Personally, I think I am 'excessively compliant' with the criminal statutes declaring homicide a first-degree felony...but I have no desire to become less so. I don't disagree with your conclusion, but the real issue here is how can one be pro-UND without being pro-sexism. You're basically telling girls and young women who happen to like sports that they are spoiled and have too many opportunities. Toss in the fact that the overwhelming sentiment expressed here is that of predominantly male fans of the revenue sports at UND, and I guarantee that the school's rank-and-file female student athletes will take exception. The financial house needs to be in order, yes, but the Title IX lightning rod is a dangerous one and should only be part of the analysis.
  19. I respect the hostile opinions of you and others toward the logo, but I have to ask...at what point do you stop expressing them in a non-constructive way? I think one would have to be one hell of a miserable person to stay so negative on a single topic for so long, especially when he or she is (a) completely powerless to do anything, and (b) going to be increasingly affected by and immersed in 'the topic' for the foreseeable future. Either that, or you're trolling. Maybe this is a preview of life in America post-November, when a boatload of people are going to really disappointed (understatement intended) no matter who wins the election. I think we all need a refresher on humility and acceptance.
  20. Apples and oranges. How can you possibly compare dollar-to-dollar a niche, regional/travel-heavy, large-roster, equipment-intensive sport like women's hockey that plays in a makeshift league with mens basketball, one of 300+ programs nationwide that plays in tank tops and sneakers against far more accessible opponents and is based in an established conference. You need a better metric. Try looking at comparable institutions and ratios if you want to make this point.
  21. Kennedy attempting to rein in the hysteria and overemphasis on "conference affiliation"? Far cry from Schlossman's "New UND President Mark Kennedy has made it clear that he wants his school to look at new options for a conference home for its athletics programs."
  22. I'm normally a fan of Schlossman, but he has taken some rather gratuitous liberties here. Where does he get 'look at new options' from the Kennedy e-mail? If the IAC subcommittee finds that the current conference landscape "fits" UND, there will be no "new options" to consider. Just another day of manufactured news by Forum Communications?
