You could make this argument to get rid of most collegiate athletic programs. It was the size of the deficit that doomed WH, not that it didn't make money. Most collegiate programs lose money.

I am far from a Denialist and I don't like what has happened to UND's programs this season. But some of your scenarios are a bit too dystopian even for me. I don't think Grand Forks is on its way to depopulating to Fargo and turning "The Metro" into another Minneapolis. You make it sound that way sometimes and that is what rubs people the wrong way. That being said, I appreciate the perspective you bring to this forum and you should have a place here.

If we cannot afford what it takes to be a successful Division I school, then we shouldn't have moved up in the first place. I don't understand why THAT'S so hard to comprehend.

And having a shiny new outdoor stadium had nothing to do with landing recruits? The point UNDvince97-01 is making is that having nice facilities can give you an edge in recruiting.

A fair point. I think the voter pool could be limited to UND alums, current faculty, staff and students; season ticket holders, Champions Club members, etc. That would cut out a lot of the shenanigans.

Not necessarily the same exact methods. But a bracket-style tournament format would generate more attention and interest. You could have promoted it on the Heraldo web site, this forum, the Alumni Association could have helped as well. And it would make the whole process entertaining instead of all the committees and their watching-paint-dry entertainment quality meetings.

This would have been better than the asinine, convoluted process they used.

This is what we should have done to choose a new nickname.

SDSU is a good example of this. They made it to the FCS semifinals this year. And their facilities have improved light years since they moved up to FCS. They will be contenders and a potential stumbling block for NDSU in the coming years. Funding Phase II will make us more competitive as well. #getitdone

That's the point, there is little to no chance that the B1G treat UND as an equal in the B1G Hockey Conference. It would be like when Notre Dame wanted a bunch of one-sided concessions to join the NCHC.

So you think the men's team is the best Team USA has to offer? I say HECK NO, not even close.

My point is that a 39 year old retired player should not be on this team. This cannot be "the best we can get". And don't think for a second that the East Coast Bias in the sports media didn't have something to do with his inclusion on the team. Heads need to roll at USA Hockey for this. It is simply unacceptable.

My mom used to be a server there and me and my parents used to eat there all the time. Sad to see it close.

With the season being disappointing, some "doom and gloom" is to be expected. That being said, I think people should take a step back and not judge kids that haven't even set foot on campus. We won't know what they are or aren't until they are here and playing.

What is Gionta doing on the team PERIOD? I guess if you play for Boston College, you get special dibs on these national teams.

Please don't go down that road. UND has the tradition, history, facilities and NHL alums to be able to get anyone they go after. But you never get all of them, nobody does.
