No disrespect to this players cause he looks like a very good player but WHY another guard. He looks more like a point guard in the video that can shoot, so we now have 7 point guards and off guards on our team. How has this improved us for the Big Sky when our weakness is underneath. We needed a big man for this freshman class not another guard. Dont understand what the coaches are thinking because we definately did not make a move forward with this scholarship. If Austin plays this coming year and doesnt red-shirt then which freshman from this past year rides the bench. To me thats breaking up real good team chemistry. Oh well time will once again tell, but not exactly what we needed. You might see some kids leave now and open up room for a BIG. Go Sioux

I like that one already. Great choice SIOUXper5

Since its the off season and Im getting bored I thought it would be time to give these 5 freshmen a nickname. Its still hard to believe that these 5 led us to 19 wins when four of them were starters for most of the year. UND's freshmen were the highest scoring freshmen class as a percentage of team points in the entire nation for D1 basketball. Recap, Huff was named on the freshmen all-american team for mid-major schools and is the all-time leading scorer for a freshmen in UND history. Webb is ranked 8th all-time for freshmen scoring and played the most minutes on the team this year. Schuler is ranked 10th all-time for freshmen scoring and played the second most minutes of anyone on the team and had a 2-1 assist to turnover ratio(best on the team). Brekke started most of the year and was a force in the middle during the middle of the season. Anderson played a key back-up role and was the leader in free throws made and free throw percentage. Also, the freshmen were 4 of our 5 top scorers for the team this season and they led us to a conference tournament championship in their first year (1st d1 title ever). So what can a nickname be? I say the SIOUX 5. Whats your thoughts?

Thats exactly what I meant. Thank you

I am more than happy with our guards and depth at our guard position and to go with that they are all freshmen and should improve. They led us to 19 wins when nobody to start the season thought they would win 8. I would like to see the coaches give these guards the chance to grow without bringing more guards in when our obvious weakness is underneath against bigger and stronger opponents, which will be the case in the Big Sky. Time will tell but with only 2 scholarships available for this year and next I hate to see 2 more guards added. Does anyone know which guard is coming in this weekend? Go Sioux

If we dont snag a BIG man either this year with our one scholarship or next year with only one scholarship I believe we are in trouble of making a legit run at a Big Sky conference title for this current freshmen class. We have the guards to do it right now, but we dont have the big body to bang with the Big Sky unless some sort of miracle happens with Wilmer or Archer. Brekke did a great job in the middle of the year against guys his size but constant foul problems at the end of the year worry me about a legit backup. The current freshmen class proved they can play with about anybody and with a couple more years under their belt they are serious contenders as long as they improve and the coaching staff gives them help underneath. What does another guard really do for us right now? We already have 2 new ones coming in next year.
-
Again, no BIG bodies. Wont win the Big Sky without some big bodies.
-
Dont understand why we keep offering point guards and guards. If we get verbals from all these guards in 2-3 years we will have 5 point guards on the floor with the tallest being 6'. I know they are going after the best they can get but seriously almost all point guards lately. In the Big Sky we need some big bodies for our future. Go Sioux

I really dont see Huff leaving. Usually a player transfers when he is not getting enough playing time, thus not happy. In Huffs situation he is without a doubt the most athletic player on this roster and his playing time is not a matter of concern. In order for him to transfer he would have to sit out a year and if he went to a major school his playing time would possibly be much less. In my opinion he is in a good place for himself and UND. Alot of work still needs to be done by him to be a more all around player but there is no question his upside is off the charts. Go Sioux

I believe Jones handles the offense. I always felt it was just a matter of time before Moody was offered his own head coaching position. He is young, intelligent and has a passion for the game. I was hoping it would be latter than sooner for our own selfish reasons. This now gives someone else the opportunity to help guide the Sioux into the Big Sky and hopefully to the BIG dance. Go Sioux

Yes it is a big loss but the program will be fine. Moody was the defensive coach and Im sure someone within will be promoted to fill his shoes. As long as we dont lose any of our key young players our future is very bright. Goodluck to Moody I'm sure he will be very successful. Go Sioux

Yes, I believe all 13 are being used. In basketball you cant use partial scholarships like in other sports. They are all full scholarships. This current year we have 2 full scholarships to fill. One going to Gentry (Benton will be a walk on based on whats being said) and the other still too be determined. We have 5 full scholarships to the sophomore class and 5 full scholarships to our freshmen class. If nothing changes we will only have one scholarship to be offered after this next season and if Benton is given a scholarship after this year then none will be available, so what we have now will not change until the sophomore class graduates. Actually at the D1 level you have 13 full scholarships(not 12). Of our 15 players only Mathison and Stockdale are not on scholarships. Agree with everything else you posted as I have basically said the same thing. Thats why my last question was has anybody left the program since I assume the coaches have talked to everyone. Dont believe the coaches will pull anybody's scholarship. They all appear to be hard working players, but usually only 7-9 play.

Been reading alot on espn and other places about players transferring schools. Any word if any of our players are making a move? Go Sioux

Whats his position and size?
-
Talent evaluation for how they will perform at the D1 level is extremely hard to predict. Everyone plays against different levels of competition in high school and just because someone puts up tremendous numbers does not necessarily translate into a good college player. I have to agree with alot of comments that we need bigs and it doesnt have to be a 7' player, but could be a big body 6'9" player. We got destroyed by big bodied players this year cause we had no one that could bang with these players. We seem really set at the point guard with Webb and Anderson for several more years. The off guard position is also solid with Schuler and a good back up. Huff and Goodman are also very solid at the 3 position for years to come. Mitchell has one more good year at the 4 and Allard did a good job backing up this year. Brekke did a solid job at the post when he went against like size players. Until he proves he can stay out of foul trouble this is where he need the help as explained before. Incoming we have an athletic 3 or 4 in Gentry and a potential backup at the wing in Benton. With the expected improvement from our starters I believe we are really solid for another great run next year. Go Sioux

I bet they would if they had 4 freshmen starting and another the first one off the bench for the experience. At this stage any game against a very good team is worth the price. Of course, based on what was said in prior posts this game cost UND nothing. Go Sioux

Huff is definately a great talent. He did alot of amazing things this year. With that being said I would rather him being a 15 point/game guy and dish the ball more often on drives that he takes absolutely awful shots. He takes 3-4 horrible shots a game with others wide open on the wings. This would increase his assists and minimize all the turnovers he has. He tries to do too much at times during every game. Balance for a team is very key. Like to see Huff around 15, Mitchell should also be around 14-15, Schuler around 10-12 and Webb around 10 with much less turnovers and Brekke around 8-10. This is very possilbe and would make us a very sold team and a hard one to defend.
-
That was one monster dunk for someone 6'. That would definately shake up Webb and Anderson at point, one would sit alot of minutes. Go Sioux
-
You are correct about Brekke. In the last 5-6 games he has been in foul trouble for almost the entire game. He has got to control the fouls cause we definately need him inside because as of right now we do not have an experienced backup post player. Benter has done a great job late in the season backing up Brekke. I would also like to see Schuler play the point alittle more so he can get more touches. He is so under control and when he penetrates he always finds a wide open guy or takes a great shot. He seems to always be looking for the open man and cant recall all year of him taking a bad shot, its either a wide open shot or a good dish to someone else that is wide open. This is one area the other freshmen must improve on. I have always said we take alot of forced shots when others are wide open. If Huff and Anderson can improve on this we are going to be extremely good in the years to come. The foundation is definately set with this group of freshman and all we need is alittle improvement and some key recruits or somone from the sophomore class to really step up. The light at the end of the tunnel is very bright and already look forward to how much this class improves. This class will win the Big Sky tournament before they are done and will be dancing. The Sioux never give up. They are truly the FIGHTING SIOUX. They fight till the end of every game but just could not pull this one off against a very solid team. It definately looked like they were tired on defense most of the night but how can they not be. If my calculations are correct we have 3 freshmen that are in the top 10 freshmen scoring in the history on UND. That is unbelievable and gives so much hope to the future. Congrats to those 3 ( Huff, Webb and Schuler). They have all got in improve in alot of areas but holly cow, 19 wins and the future looks very bright. Enjoyed watching and listening to all the games and especially all the chats with everyone. It has been exciting and look forward to this again next year. Go Sioux

I am thinking the emotional win over South Dakota is going to carry forward into this game and the Sioux are going to give the Air Force Academy all they can handle. Go Sioux

Agree, every game that is played and especially in any kind of tournament will only help down the road. The men are showing at a very young experience level that they can win the close games. The last half of the season they have been down double digit points and have come back to win or had leads disappear and all hope lost only to pull out the victory. This is usually done by veteran teams not teams that start 4 freshmen. Hopefully they are learning the value of every possession counts and that one or two bad shots could end up with a loss. Its all still work in progress and a road game against Air Force at this point of the season should be valuable experience win or lose. Go Sioux

There are only 140 D1 schools still playing basketball and the SIOUX are one of them. Congrats again to all the players and coaches that made us proud. I feel an upset coming in Colorado Springs tomorrow night. Go Sioux
