James MacNaughton purchased the cup in 1913 for $2G's and awarded it to the champion of the AHA. It's 100 years old and I bet LSSU, Bowling Green, Ferris State or any other former-CCHA team would be PROUD to hoist it next season as the WCHA champion.
I'm not sure YOU get it. UND can mope around for a week about 'woulda coulda shoulda' or the Sioux can prepare for St Cloud State.
They blew a two-goal lead with ten minutes left in the game. I'll double-check my college hockey history, but I don't think that's a first.
The entire point of my earlier tongue-in-cheek post was that Sioux fans were screaming bloody murder about how poor their team is and predicting doom and gloom the rest of the season. By that token, a tie on Saturday should have been perceived to be a good thing. Instead, those same fans were upset over the tie. The fact is, it's awfully tough to win at Mariucci.
So for complete unbiased reporting, should I go login over at GopherPukeLive?
Just an FYI, too...use of the 'R' word went out with the Carter administration.
And my rebuttal was that it was immediately used as the CCHA championship trophy for three seasons. Do you have any idea how old that cup is or the history behind it?
The only thing confusing to me is why Colorado College is so willing to part with the Broadmoor Trophy...considering its the old Broadmoor Hotel in Colorado Springs. It would kinda be like a Westward Ho Trophy going to Hockey East.
Son, you've lost me...
The WCHA commissioned the Broadmoor Trophy AFTER Tech went to the CCHA. When Tech returned, the Broadmoor was given to the conference playoff champion.
The custodian of the MacNaughton Cup is Michigan Tech. The cup will stay with the WCHA while the Broadmoor Trophy will come with Colorado College to the NCHC.
Whoa whoa whoa, AZSIOUX...do you mean UND is NOT ranked 50th in the Pairwise this morning and Bruce McLeod is NOT boxing up the MacNaughton Cup and shipping it to Mariucci Arena?
Somebody better put out a bulletin on Siouxsports.com ASAP before any more fans jump off a bridge.
To summarize:
Pre-Saturday game SiouxSports board
1) I'm beginning to question Hakstol's decisions
2) You may as well hand over the MacNaughton Cup to Minnesota right now
3) I just hope we don't get blown out
4) Minnesota clearly has more talent
5) The wrong coach was let go last spring
6) This is the wrong game to start Gothberg
7) Bring out your dead
Post-Saturday game SiouxSports board:
1) Well, it still FEELS like a loss
...and I've never had an issue in Duluth, Mankato, St Cloud, East Lansing, Ann Arbor, or Houghton either...there just isn't the outright hatred between programs like North Dakota and Minnesota.
