University of North Dakota Hockey 2016 - 2017 Season
Brucesky02 replied to Frozen4sioux's topic in Men's Hockey
The $100 price tag is aggressive. From their perspective, I can't blame them for trying it out though. I don't know what their single game ticket quantity available is, but if it was 2,000 seats per game, you're talking about $200,000 in extra revenue on the weekend. That said...IMO - the UND athletic dept. should address this sort of pricing behavior in any future agreements with schools. Either a cap on the % increase allowed or a revenue share on any increase over the average ticket price that school charges. For conference games, the NCHC should exercise some muscle in stopping the similar behavior like we saw with the package requirements in Denver. While these high ticket prices and package requirements make short-term economical sense for the schools, I believe they represent a long-term loss for college hockey. I witnessed a similar behavior in NASCAR. (grew up in NC) They had huge demand - the waiting list for tickets to the night race at Bristol was 84,000 people when I signed up in 1998. There were certainly some other factors like overbuilding grandstands (supply) and the poor economy, but when I started going to races in 1997, tickets were generally $20-$60. By the mid-2000s when their decline started, tickets were $75-$200. As people stopped coming, they lost interest. I can't remember if there are any proven theories on this, but what I'm getting at is that sports economics is not a standard supply and demand chart. You can't just drop prices later and have demand increase at the same level. As you increase price, you reduce demand, and that reduction has a continued effect in the future as fans lose interest in the sport. -
Kudos to you for the verified info on this. Nice work. +1 for the chicken-sandwiched comment alone. CFA has had North Dakota on their open locations for franchisees for about a year now. They had some franchisee interest meetings in the state this spring. I would have to assume Fargo is getting one as well, given they held franchisee meetings there. Hopefully whoever got the franchisee slot(s) is a local. It's a good opportunity to "own" your own business with very little money required. I say "own" because CFA actually owns everything...but a $10,000 investment for a franchise that averages $200,000/yr in profit for an operator is pretty great IMO. Despite being a chain, it should be a nice addition to the community. Lots of great training for young employees, plus a decent college scholarship program, and they typically do a lot of community events/special nights.

Their service wasn't always the fastest, but they had great bread and baked goods. Sad day for eating in Grand Forks - Dakota Harvest has closed its doors. The business had been up for sale since January. I'm assuming they never found a buyer...also assuming the closure was not financially related. The last few times I was in there, it was just as busy as ever.

What's with the Popolino's hate? Their crust is delicious. Maybe it's a difference of style preference or something...but they are the best pizza in town IMO. I don't make a trip back to GF without hitting up 746-POPS.

I think you guys are forgetting how bad it used to be in Grand Forks. 10 years ago, driving across town took almost twice as long. Some time in the late 2000s, they implemented a state of the art system that uses upgraded signal computers, cameras, and a central computer system to create more efficient traffic flows. I can't find the study any more, but I remember reading that it shaved something like 8 minutes off the average time from Gateway to 32nd on Columbia. They are always evaluating traffic patterns and accident records. Gateway used to have an even lower speed limit until they upped it a few years back. If you think a road needs a higher limit, your best bet is going to be to contact your council member or just go right to the city traffic engineer, Jane Williams, to make your suggestion - Jwilliams@grandforksgov.com I agree on the winter/summer discrepancy. It almost feels like GF needs two sets of speed limits posted - one for November-March and another for April-October. As for the bad drivers...they aren't much better anywhere else you go.

I would be against playing in the B1G...but to play devil's advocate here, your list only includes 4 B1G conference games. The other 4 were OOC games, where scheduling is at the discretion of the teams involved. Here were the NCHC Conference and OOC non-F/Sa games this year: (1) NCHC: Thu.2/18/20167:00 MT(10) Denver4@Colorado College1 (6) OOC: Tue.10/13/20157:00 ET(10) Bowling Green1@Western Michigan4 Sun.11/29/20153:00 ET(5) North Dakota4@Michigan State1 Sun.11/29/20156:00 CT(7) St. Cloud State7@Minnesota4 Sun.12/20/20152:00 CTArizona State0@(6) Nebraska-Omaha Wed.12/30/20155:00 ETWestern Michigan1@(12) Bowling Green0 Sun.1/3/20165:00 ETRensselaer2@Miami4 *BSU and UMD played on a Tuesday, but I didn't include that as it was a makeup game outside of normal scheduling.

I don't understand why...but the story on the Sioux merchandise found its way to the ESPN college sports homepage. All I can figure is they have some algorithm that determined I wanted to see it based on my IP.

Any word if these are in Fargo, or are they a GF only sort of thing?

Thank you for taking an otherwise fine discussion and making it personal.

Unfortunately, I've heard it in St. Cloud in years past while only the cheerleaders were on the ice, which is perhaps why I'm a little sensitive on it. It's a joke, yes. But it's a joke that makes a punchline out of women who are bigger than normal. I just don't think that's ok. And beyond that, it's a tired joke, time to give it a rest.

Vote on your final 5 nickname choices (just ND is out)

That whole exchange was spurred on by tweets from @UofHockeyBlog (the tweets are now deleted) saying that Kelley was at the meeting and threatened to disband the committee. Schlossman isn't the ultimate authority on Mr. Kelley or even all things UND. He was just commenting on this rumor that Kelley was at the meeting and threatened to drop the committee. Try again. -

I'm not in the "no-nickname, stay Sioux, or die" club, but this quote from committee member John Bridewell says a lot to me about how much President Kelley has had his hands in matters behind the scenes, out of the public eye. http://www.grandforksherald.com/news/education/3801860-undnorth-dakota-out-committee-forwards-5-nicknames-public-vote And to this post, all Schlossman confirmed was that Kelley wasn't at the meeting. Nobody has been able to (or will be able to) prove that Kelley hasn't been whispering in committee ears all along. -

I can live with/support any nickname, except Sun Dogs. I would genuinely rather put on a Bison or Gopher hat before I touched anything Sun Dog. -
They had a winning record.

Top 10 Moments in Sioux History since 2000
Brucesky02 replied to fight on sioux's topic in Men's Hockey
I forgot another favorite - "Glow Stick Night" vs. Wisconsin The Ralph decided it would be cool to give everyone a green glowstick to wave during player intros, and it looked pretty cool, especially when they started raining down on the ice. I remember it was one from the upper deck, then a couple more, and then the floodgates opened up and what felt like thousands rained down. I'm pretty sure someone managed to throw one inside of a Wisconsin player's face mask. -

My favorite moments, in no particular order: -2007 West Regional OT winner over Goofs -Kyle Radke beating the snot out of a DU player between periods -Dasher Dance -2010 playoff series vs. Gophers (Frattin's demolition derby & throttling them twice) -2008 West Regional comeback and OT win over Wisconsin -Trupp's OT winner batted out of the air vs. the Gophers -Last year's shorty OT winner vs. Air Force -Doug Woog vs. Dean Blais Bubble Hockey -
I thought of another big screen feature that is no more: "The University of North Dakota is the home of the Fighting Sioux. UND chose the name Fighting Sioux in the 1930s, because the Sioux warriors were the most courageous of all warriors. The great Sioux nation epitomized honor, courage, pride, overcoming adversity, and winning battles. We ask tonight that you would cheer your team to victory, and exhibit good sportsmanship, as well as respect for the American Indians and their proud and honored culture and heritage. Thank you."

YES. Another one I had forgotten about.

I had completely forgotten about "Beer Lady"/"Beer Grandma" until this morning, which got me thinking, what other sort of in-game features have been a part of UND hockey games in the past that we're forgetting? I'll start the list: -Beer Lady/Beer Grandma -Cowbell Guy
